“Fine for a short stay”
Reviewed 20 July 2009

Have just returned from a three night stay at The Belmont. We enjoyed our stay on the IOW and The Belmont was a friendly hotel. Unfortunately we booked room 14 which was a very small double with very little room to move around, small ensuite bathroom with dated shower cubicle with inadequate water pressure. However, our bedroom and ensuite were very clean. Breakfasts were ample and owners very friendly and helpful. I think if you make sure you book a larger room I'm sure you'll have a good stay.

I took my mum to The Belmont for a 3 night short break. Usually I book with hotel chains and wasn't sure what to expect. I had read the reviews and was very pleasantly surprised to find the hotel exceeded my expectations. It was an impressive building, full of character with comfy lounge area and seperate bar, we loved the veranda for an evening night cap. The two rooms we had booked were as described, bed comfy, plenty of space to hang your clothes, bed was firm but I slept so well! We didn't get a chance to use the garden and pool but there's always next time! The owners were fab, friendly and very helpful. Excellent customer service! Just the right amount of attention without being overfriendly! The hotel breakfast was much better than the usual hotel chain ones I'm used to! Excellent choice, good quality food and service! The location was perfect, Shanklin Old Village about 5 mins walk and the cliff lift the same. The restuarants we went to had imaginative menus and reasonable prices for good food. We travelled around the island during the day and The Belmont was a lovely restful place to come back to!

The Belmont is extremely well positioned, just one road back from the sea and an easy walk to the old village of Shanklin. It is opposite a church so the outside feels spacious as you drive in. The entrance area was very inviting as there was a good seating area with comfy sofas and chairs and also a bar area to the left.

Linda was seated at the desk and was every bit as friendly as she sounded from her emails. We were immediately made welcome and she took us around the hotel showing where everything was. There is a very good seating area to the front of the hotel on a veranda which gets the early sun so was a good place to sit enjoying a coffee in the morning, and the garden was raised with plenty of seating and a pool. The breakfast room overlooked the garden and each table had your room number on, so there was no rushing to get a table in the mornings.

We were taken to our rooms, our daughter was staying in the small double which was quite roomy with a small en-suite shower room and view over the garden. We were in one of the four poster rooms for the first couple of nights and were then moving to another room for the remainder of our stay. Our room was big, also overlooking the garden with plenty of hanging and drawer space. There was tea/coffee facilities provided, with not only these drinks provided but also decaf coffee, hot chocolate and Horlicks, together with complimentary biscuits that were replenished each day. This was very welcome when you returned to the hotel in the afternoon after a day of sightseeing.

The bathroom in both rooms was large with not only bubble bath, shower/shampoo wash but conditioner, shoe shine, comb, toothbrush and toothpaste, razor and showercap. I have never stayed anywhere before with such a good supply of these essential items, even in 5* hotels you do not get all of these. You could basically arrive with just your clothes and everything else is provided.

Our second room had all the same facilities but overlooked the front, had a much larger bed and better seating area, you could also see the sea from the windows.

When we went downstairs Linda gave us complimentary tea and we tried out the sofas, they were very comfortable and we found lots of games and books were there for guest use. There was also a daily and the local papers supplied for you to read.

We decided to eat in that night and the meal was very good and plentiful. The next morning we went down to breakfast and we found that each and every day this was fantastic. You helped yourself to the cold buffet where many cereals, fruits, breads, juices etc., were provided, you also helped yourself to toast from a very good toaster (you could get your toast very brown in a short time). The choice of tea and coffee was also very good and you had a huge hot menu to choose from, it was well cooked individually for each party when they ordered and was excellent. It really set you up for the day.

The lads who served breakfast in the mornings we so friendly and helpful and remembered what you usually preferred very quickly.

Shanklin itself has many restaurants, pubs and shops and all is within a short walk of the hotel. The lift to the beach is also very nearby. The hotel was very popular and we were not the only ones that had to change rooms because it was so busy, and the change over was very easy, they moved everything for us whilst we were out. This is Linda’s first year running the hotel and the general consensus from guests is that booking will be a must, we all want to return, she has made it more than a home from home and we wish her and hubby all the best for the future.

A warm welcome awaits you at this character hotel. The double ensuite room was spacious and provided a comfortable nights sleep. The breakfasts were ample! The owners made you feel part of the family and were involved throughout. Set in a lovely location 2 minutes walk from the south coast of the island. It is well situated for walks on either the coast or downs. Another visit awaits!

My Partner and i booked the hotel for 3 nights as a base for a wedding and to explore the island. The hotel also organised our ferry crossings at the times we required and we got a great vibe from the hotel just from phone and e-mail correspondance. When we arrived we were shown personally to our room which was very clean and airy. The complimentary drinks and toiletries were excellent and included everything you might have forgotten. We were then invited to relax and take tea/coffee in the lounge (which has a great selection of board games!!) this was a lovely touch after a long journey, the fact pack of local restaurants was certainly useful along with the hosts recommendations. The service was exemplary throughout and the breakfasts, well, were simply brilliant, everything you could hope to see (including wheat/gluten free cereals) and all hot food cooked perfectly to order. The interior of the hotel and rooms were not the neutral magnolia wash and some reviews have used the words 'dated' and 'tired', not so, we found the interior charming , warm and a refreshing change to see character left in the hotel. This a wonderful hotel and deserves to be at the top of the list for the customer service (so many nice touches) and breakfast alone, we were sad to leave at the end of our stay! If i was being really picky the only thing i would say is the shower could have been a touch more powerful. We would certainly stay here again and would recommend it to anyone visiting the island. Lin. Des, Bruno and family, thank you for a fabulous stay!!

On arrival we were met by the very friendly owner . After check-in we were offered a complimentary coffee. Our room No.15 was on the first floor and very spacious and very clean. There was tea and coffee making facilities replenished every day. The bathroom also had some very helpful touches such as toothbrushes + small toothpaste (disposable) and razor (disposable) of course along wih the usual items such as hand soap etc all of these being in pump style containers.
The bar area was again very friendly and you were made to feel very welcome. Evening meals were available served in the bar area. The breakfast was served in the breakfast room and was excellent in volume and quality.
We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel as we had a thoroughly good time.

A lovely b&b with everything you would want from a hotel. Clean, comfortable and superb service. We were greeted with a complimentary tea/coffee upon arrival, which was greatly received after a few hours travelling. There is a bar which does pub-grub and they even supply board games which can be played in the lounge!

If I HAD to make one criticism-the walls could do with sound-proofing, but then, that happens when you have "noisy" neighbours!
