The hotel is in an excellent position and within walking distance of the old and new towns. There is a lift opposite to get down to the seaside level - there is a charge. However, the hotel is somewhat dated and is in need of an interior improvement programme - although shown as a 3 star hotel in their brochure it is really only worthy of 2 stars at the moment. I cannot fault the staff. I have noted the comments abut the deputy Manager - I personally found her very pleasant and helpful. Bedroom and bathroom - pleasantly large with plenty of storage. However, there is no shaver socket in the bathroom or hairdryer provided (reception were unable to supply me with one for the week). Try and get a bedroom overlooking the cliffside for a wonderful view of the bay - complete with balcony and chairs. There is one lift but entails a longish walk to the opposite side of the hotel - tiring if you have mobility problems.
Breakfasts were good with plenty of choice. Dinner was the big let down for the hotel. Firstly, you had to order your evening meal at breakfast which was the first sign of the institutionalised cooking we were to receive! If the Spanish Omelette (tortilla) was served to a Spaniard they would be holding their head in their hands! It loooked like a brick and - I am reliably informed - tasted like one. This definately needs to be taken off the menu. You cannot run a 'tab' for your dinner table wine - you have to order it and pay at the table. I have never come across this before at a hotel when staying for a week.
The pool/spa is a bonus - although the jacuzzi wasn't working the week I was there.

Room Tip: Book a room and balcony with a sea view for a fantastic view and sunny place to sit in the mornings.

II have just read the comments made by a couple who stayed at this hotel January 2011.
i AGREE WITH EVERY THING THEY HAVE WRITTEN,
True I was not there on this occassion , but have complained about the under manager

W e have complained our self about ,the way she speake to the staff, she treats them like dirt , on one occassion we were asking a young Bulgairian waiter how he like England. The under manager came storming over and told him to get some work She spends too much time with HER special friends. while ignoring others.
When we wrote and complained we were told we were the only ones to complain
We love the hotel but will NEVER go back while she is there

What a lovely time we've had. Second time at the' Ocean View' on a Robinsons holiday and this was by far the best yet. The room was clean with pleasing decor ,although the bathroom was in need of attention but it was clean. The food was good, very tasty and we weren't left hungry. The choice of dishes was varied, something for everyone. All the staff were friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Plenty to do in and around the hotel, the pool is excellent. The hotel is ideally located for the beach and the centre of Shanklin old town........the prettiest place. It's quite hilly but the cliff lift is just outside the hotel. We're looking forward to our next trip there.

Room Tip: Book a room with a sea view, it's amazing.

We travelled in a group of 30 walkers. We were not a typical coach tour. Lots of us had never had a coach holiday before but it was convenient to come this way, partly for the Isle of Wight Walking Festival and partly to do some walking on our own. The holiday was arranged by IOW Tours Ltd and they had selected the hotel and organised our transport.
The hotel was far better than we expected, given the overall cost of the holiday. We would have quite liked large tables but accepted that this wasn't possible. The food was excellent - every meal was tasty and the menu choice was good. The service was excellent. We had a lovely room on the second floor with a large balcony and a beautiful view. OK, the bathroom could do with refurbishing but we had a bath and working shower. The staff were friendly and helpful.
This hotel is obviously geared to having large coach parties and handles groups much larger than ours very efficiently. The location was just perfect, handy for the shops and the shore.
