Stayed with a friend for a girly weekend away 4-6 October and were lucky to catch the last of this years sunshine. The view from our 2nd floor balcony (room 220) looked out onto the whole of Shanklin bay and the sunsets were amazing. This hotel is central for visiting many attractions on the island and close to Shanklin town centre which was a 10 minute stroll up a gentle hill.
The hotel is a bit tired and outdated but kept as clean as is possible with dated fixtures and fittings in the room.
The beds were clean and comfortable and there was always plenty of hot water for a shower. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room was a welcome you don't always get in every hotel and reception were only too happy to top our supplies up when I asked for more. Our 2 night stay included breakfast and dinner which consisted of 4 choices for each meal, including the 3 courses at dinner. The food was always fresh and hot and the portions were adequate. We did find it a bit strange that we were asked to pre order our evening meal at breakfast, we refused as we weren't sure what we would fancy 9 hours later !! This was met with acceptance in a professional and friendly manner from a member of the waiting staff, in fact all the staff there were as customer focused. I can only imagine that this helps out in the kitchen with portion control, which I understand but it felt a bit hospitalised.
The main clientele at this time of the year seemed to be coach trips of older people, who incidentally were sometimes louder than your 'average lager lout on a benidorm booze up' especially early morning before breakfast ! At least they got us up in time for breakfast which is served at your table 8.15 - 9.00am. Dinner is also waitress service 6.15 - 7.00pm. Quite restricting but kept us organised and on track planning our fun packed days out. The biggest problem for us was deciding which activities/visits/attractions etc to prioritise during our short stay...there are so many things to do on this small island you will be spoilt for choice.
Would I go back ? If i was looking for a value for money break ... Definitely

Room Tip: 2nd floor overlooking the beach has fabulous views

Fifty of us stayed at the OCEAN VIEW HOTEL and all came away without any complaints, the staff were friendly and very helpful, the rooms were very clean and the food was very varied and good choices, well done! to the kitchen staff and waiters and waitresses for presenting the food so quickly, yes there was the odd 'holdup' but that was due to some of the staff arriving late but who hasn't overslept at some time or other? Well done to everyone and wish you well in the future.

Room Tip: Some of the Sea View rooms are fantastic 'family rooms' with plenty of space.

Cannot fault this hotel, excellent position, outstanding sea views , pay a little extra for a room with sea view well worth it. Varied menu portions small but adequate. Friendly and courteous staff nothing is too much trouble.

Room Tip: Pay for upgrade to premier room with sea view

We first stayed here in 1999 when it was known as The Cliff Tops Hotel. Before Robinson's bought it, (Holdsworth Holidays), it had been a 3 star AA/RAC establishment. Since then in recent years we have been back 5 times - would have been six this year but we had to cancel because my wife had a "back problem". I was glad to read some of the positive reports and that the hotel is keeping up its standards. Bear in mind though, that this hotel caters mostly for coach passengers so it is necessary to keep some sort of "time discipline" as far as meal times are concerned. Also, as some previous reports have said, there is only one lift but this need not be a worry as it is no problem to sit for a few minutes and "admire the beautiful view". Reception is always efficient and I usually had a chat with Lynne every morning when I collected my pre ordered Daily Telegraph. We have always enjoyed our meals here and Stuart, the dining room manager, is most helpful and every year he has arranged little improvements to the table layouts etc. Maria is a joy and so is the bar man, Les - a real character and a scream if he does the bingo. There is another thing that some people do not like - they want to know at breakfast what you would like for dinner. That is so there is little delay in the service. Coffee/tea is served afterwards in the lounge. The dining room is on the lower ground floor so there are some (rather steep) steps to negotiate but the lift does serve this floor as well. Entertainment is usually every night except Wednesday, in the large, rather bleak, ballroom and is what you make it. Personally I am not a fan of Country and Western for instance but there are different performers to pass the night on. Les, and other staff in the large comfortable bar next door are there to look after your needs. We have never had a risque comic! We always have a "Premier Room" at extra cost and have had the same one every time by request. As previously said, 2 bottles of "still" and 2 bottles of "sparking" water are provided every day if the ones provided have finished and basket of fruit on arrival. The best rooms as far as we are concerned are on the second floor facing the sea - and what a WONDERFUL VIEW in both directions. Sometimes in the evening around 6pm - 6 - 30pm cruise liners out of Southampton appear around Culver Cliff usually lit up by the sunset. The sun sets behind the hotel so we usually take the Cliff Lift opposite down to the lower esplanade which catches the sun longer in the evening. Dave, the driver lives on the island near Osborne House and knows the place like the back of his hand. There is usually a Theatre night organised on Wednesday night and various other extra trips too. One I like particularly (not run by Robinson's but organised by them) is the sail from Cowes around Portsmouth Harbour. A bracing trip on the "Wight Scene" with a "jolly commentary" by the captain! Around the island, Cowes is very interesting with the Royal Yacht Club - see the bronze polished cannons) the village of Godshill - full of tearooms and tourist "things" but go up the hill to the picture postcard church "The Lily Church" -should not be missed. The Needles also are worth seeing but the fairground is "missable"!!
I hope I have been able to give some "flavour" to the place. Oh, and one thing I have forgotten to mention about the hotel. There is no traffic outside on the sea side - just a wide pathway along the cliff top and the room in our experience, at least where we are located, is one of the most quiet yet in any hotel where we have stayed - and no flushing toilets can be heard next door!! . .

Room Tip: "Premier" Rooms overlooking the sea on the second floor.

Good food and very pleasant staff. Our room was large but dated. But I believe that they are having an on-going refurb. We enjoyed a game of snooker, carpet bowls and table tennis. There is only one snooker table and one table tennis table. Also a pool and a ballroom. I would say that 90% of their clientele is made up of retired people. There are stair lifts and one lift, which unfortunately, only holds 4 people. In a hotel with, I think, about 100 bedrooms this isn't really big enough. On the plus side there is porterage. All in all we enjoyed our stay. But Shanklin itself is in need of some tlc.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a sea view. Ask for a room with two winbdows.

stayed as golden oldie coach tourist ! The rooms are a little dated but clean and tidy, complete with a fantastic "Ocean"view take note not all rooms face the sea, some of group not happy with their view Catering very good but has to be a bit regimented to fit in with coach schedules. Staff all good and give good service. good point for the less able bodied,,,, the lift down to the prom is just over the road All in all GOOD

Room Tip: Make sure your room faces the sea !

I was in a coach group of 32. The hotel is very well positioned with sea view rooms. The hotel staff were always friendly, polite and very very helpful. Ideal venue for a large group with separate spacious rooms for entertainment, bar area and lounge.
I would definitely recommend.
