I wil start with the postiive and there is only one thing which was the view from our room, amazing seaview! Apart from this I was amazed that we lasted the two nights. Blood on the sheets the 1st night, no one at reception to welcome us, had to walk round trying to find someone and when we did they had no knowledge of our booking and spoke little english.
No hot water and a shower that dribbled out if we were lucky. Complaints were ignored by us and several others in the hotel.
WOULD NOT STAY HERE AGAIN!

Where to start...a big disappointment, in no way lives up to its name. Very tatty and in the most part very dirty. Very basic rooms put together by a DIY amateur. The swmming pool is a stagnant pool of green water and there is rubbish stored under the bar building. The grass hasn't been cut this year by the look of it and there is lots of rotten wood on the outside of the buildings. Our room had a bathroom that does not comply with Health and Safety regulations as it had no window and should have an extractor fan fitted. The bathroom was also filthy and we did not feel safe putting anything down in there. Breakfast had to be pre-ordered the day before, never heard of that before. To sum up, don't go there.

We stayed at this hotel for eight days from the 13th August. We didn't know what to expect after having read all the negative reports, however we received a warm wecolme from the staff, our rooms (one double and one single) were both spacious and clean, plenty of hot water and clean towels. The food was very nice and enjoyable and there was a good selection of beers, wines and spirits in the bar with entertainment a couple of nights. Our thanks to everyone for an enjoyable stay we will definately go again.

I have just come back from a long weekend at the Mayfair, I found it clean and
comfortable, food lovely, service good, staff friendly and welcoming and will definitely
go again. Also perfectly situated for all the amenities of Shanklin and the surrounding
areas. Only disappointment was the swimming pool wasn't in use.

Myself and my 9 year old son have arrived back from a wonderful stop in this hotel. We were at first very anxious about our stay after reading various other reviews, however we were pleasantly surprised to find none of the awful events that were said to have occurred to other people were present at the Mayfair during our stay. The food was excellent, the service top notch and the stay was overall a fantastic experience. If you're of a later age however, there is currently no lift, and the stairlift only goes to the lower floor. So be sure to ask for a suitable room.

I would highly recommend the Mayfair to a friend, and wouldn't hesitate in going back.

This hotel did supriseme, it does look a tad dated from the outside. However, room was lovely, good size and comfortable. Very good location, close to the beach, snooker table and bar is also a bonus! Rooms were clean and breakfast was good. The hotel is definately good value for money considering it is two star, the sea views definately cannot be beaten!!!

My daughter, husband ,mother and myslelf paid a lot of money for a weeks band tour. (we could have had a two week holiday abroad for less).
The company, weather and island were fantastic but to say we were massively disappointed with the hotel is an understatement. It overlooks a beautiful bay so the position is right, just would be better if it was grounded and rebuilt. The fabric of the building was shoddy, on entry the stairs had yellow and black tape stuck on the edges (looked like a crime scene), the chandalier lighting the stairs to the bedrooms and dining room had 2 bulbs out of many working. Our room was small and on inspection filthy, there was a build up of hair and dust behind the bed, and round the edges of the carpet which I did not want to step on with bare feet. The sheets were clean and the towels but these were not changed all week. The bath had a mixer shower attached to the taps and this leaked, there was little hot water unless you were prepared to wait and then the noise started. Every time the hot water tap on ours or other peoples rooms was used the noise in our room was awful, we must have had the tank from WW2 next to us, this kept me awake at night until everyone went to bed. There was a piece of toilet paper under the toilet that was not moved all week!!!
Take some hangers we only had 6.
The lounge area needed careful manouvering the chairs were so crammed in that it was difficult to get through, the lights were incredible, different light fittings some with shades some with them missing, none matched, the carpet was stained and tacky. This led to the decking outside, lovely view if you could sit at the stained plastic tables, with dirty ashtrays and broken glass in the wooden floor which was not removed, (funny we saw a cleaner cleaning the spindles on the wooden stairs which led to the carpark but not the tables or broken glass!)???
Food was in the bowels of the hotel again a filthy stained carpet we were asked to sit at the same table all week and when the waiter had spilt food on the cloth on our first night we had the same stain all week. When we arrived and ordered first we were served last, there was no system, plates were taken whilst people were still eating from them, and the next course delivered so you had the starter and main at the same time, my husband had his breakfast delivered and had to lift up his cereal and eat it in the air. The food was awful, the strangest combinations and little meat or expensive items, I had a meal with 2 x 2cm squares of chicken one night, the cheese and crackers was a joke 2 crackers a mountain of salad and a slice of processed cheese (origin unknown), another night I could not eat any of the meal and went to the room to snack on cereal bars which I had brought for the journey down.
Another elderly coach party came in, the old ladies struggled with the steps as there was no lift, and the stair lift was broken.
It was a triumph if you got what you ordered even though we religiously filled in the little order slips for the following meal. What was funny on our last morning a tub was put out for staff service tips, I cant imagine it was used.
My daughter and other younger band members were looking forward to the pool, however it was fenced off with no water and a green slime covering the base.
I was very disappointed when we left to discover that some of my clothes had been stolen from the room. Just added insult to injury.
If we had not been in a large group there is no way I would have stayed at this hotel, I cant imagine that it would pass an environmental health check, or safelty check (the fire doors were constantly propped open!) it is a real shame as the British tourist apparantly is not visiting the Island as much, I wonder why?????
