“Depressing”
Reviewed 13 April 2009

The moment we entered the hotel, we wanted to go back, because we found our room small and depressing. It had a tiny window with no natural light coming in. Next morning we complained to the owner and after a bitter argument he agreed to return our money back for rest of our days. We went and stayed in a far better hotel at less price.
Not recommended.

We stayed at this 15 bedroom hotel for one night and in this occassion we enjoyed very much the stay.

First of all for those who wish to be close to the beach, they cannot get better only literally one minute walk. The beach is very nice and reminded us of our country - Italy.

Secondly, the owners Donald and Caroline Hobbs, the owners, were very welcoming, friendly and took care of us in a very personal way, making us feel as their very old friends.

The room has TV, ensuite, tea/coffee making facilities. The standard facilities that are expected to be found in this type of hotel rating.

The hotel has a restaurant with bar lounge. Both place are very welcoming and warm. The food was very well presented and tasted nice too. The service was also excellent as the staff really looked after you while having the meal.

Finally we do really reccommend anyone to stay at this hotel for the reasons already described above.

Once we go back to the Isle of Wight, for sure we will want to stay again at the St Brelades. After all it was not really expensive almost free. :-) :-) :-) :-)

I agree with what many people have said in their reviews that the staff are friendly but this does not excuse some of the faults we found.

The shower in our room was broken - every time you moved it the entire shower head and support would come off the wall. This was compunded by the fact that it would have been more effective if someone had sneezed on us such was the weakness of the shower. Finally, the door was broken. Not a great experience.

The other guest we stayed with had a twin room for single occupancy and only had the option of a bath. No method of making things easier was offered so she had to go out and buy a bucket to wash her hair.

Breakfasts were nice and plentiful but we all felt that the place needed a good bit of modernisation. It was clean but tired looking. The rates are OK but I've stayed in places 10 times as good in other European resorts for the same money.

On the plus side, if you're visitng Shanklin for the beaches the location is ideal.

We pride ourselves on our guests enjoying their stay with us at our hotel and we were astonished to find that this member’s experience was not enjoyable. We must apologise for the ‘faults’ that were encountered. We always welcome constructive feedback from all our customers and the first we knew about this was from the comments left through tripadvisor, and not directly from your members.

Firstly when the reservation was confirmed and on check-in it was pointed out that this room had a bath and no shower. It has never been advertised that our establishment has power showers and we have never received a complaint regarding the water pressure, so to read the comment ‘it would have been more effective if someone had sneezed on us’ – we find that truly laughable. On examining the shower, it was found that the support had been loosened but the shower door was not broken. On occasion we have the the person who seems to struggle with the bi-fold shower doors and as a result one of the runners has slipped off the rail on which it sits on, but this does not prevent the shower from being used and can be easily rectified.

On separate occasions it was asked ‘Is everything okay’ but at no point throughout the stay were the ‘faults’ highlighted to our friendly staff.

We appreciate that everyone has different expectations and on this occasion it is unfortunate that we were not given the opportunity to remedy the ‘faults’ – and for that, we feel it is a real shame.

I have stayed at this Hotel twice now and also recommeded it to friends. It is a family run hotel in a great location which I have found friendly and warm. The rooms are comfortable and the Hobbs family will go that extra mile to cator for their guests needs. We enjoyed our stay and found St Brelades an excellent base to explore the Isle and return to each day.

This is a really friendly, family run hotel where you actually feel like a guest of the Hobbs family, rather than just paying customers. It's quite small but cosy with very good facilities, the rooms are comfortable with all the amenities you would expect and I observed the proprietors providing things like extra pillows etc when asked by other guests. The menu is varied with good choice, even for my 2 young fussy eaters, and the location is perfect - 2 minutes from the beach (even though it is downhill!) and lots of other pretty attractions within easy walking distance.
This is about my 4th visit to this hotel and I will definitely be coming back, hopefully when the weather permits some proper beach adventures!
