“Excellent, with friendly helpful staff”

We have recently returned from a 3 day visit to the Hillside hotel, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff all take an interest in you to make your visit feel special.
We especially liked the way the hotel was furnished, it was spotlessly clean & the food was of a high standard.
Each night we enjoyed a pre dinner drink in the sitting room which was made to feel cosy with lit candles.
We were originally attracted to this hotel by previous comments on trip advisor & we were certainly not disappointed.
We would certainly recommend this hotel & would definitely like to return in the future.
Gert & staff keep up the good work!

I am not one to normally make reviews on such websites but after our recent stay at the Hillside, I felt compelled to express our enjoyment and complete satisfaction.

While visiting friends on the Isle of Wight last weekend, my husband and I were very lucky to stumble across the Hillside. The owner, Gert, is Danish and as a true Dane has been blessed with true style. The hotel is warm, unfussy, with soft touches of Danish simplicity and even a few infamous and celebrated design chairs to kick back in. The Danes certainly know how to achieve that cool factor without trying too hard.

The hotel is set on a hill overlooking the seaside with public tennis courts and the local village a short walk downhill from the property. As the weather wasn't ideal during our stay, we spent most of our time relaxing in the many cosy nooks of the hotel with a glass of red, reading, walks around the coast, or enjoying the delicious food served by the chef.

The hotel is small (only a handful of rooms), so it is a personal experience without being too imposing. Nothing was too difficult for Gert and his wonderful staff. As we are currently expecting our first child, we recognised that the hotel caters for all - whether it be young couples, to families and beyond.

Thank you to all at the Hillside for such a pleasant stay, we will certainly be back and can certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful and enjoyable escape.

I had once again the pleasure to visit Hillside (3 nights).
It is - as always - a great place. A hotel that manages to combine the "old" soul with modern art and classic furniture designs. Beds you would wish you had at home - in clean and stylish rooms. Consistently very very very good and delicious food - both breakfast and dinner. Super service from the whole team - a presence and an awareness that you do not experience elsewhere. When the trip goes to the IOW again - the trip also goes to Hillside. I can recommend Hillside to all who appreciate good quality and extremely high standards.

This hotel is set in a beautiful building and grounds and we had a lovely spotless room with great facilities and an excellent breakfast (amazing sausages), BUT! The hosts were really quite peculiar.

Although the hosts (a couple) were very welcoming and helpful - they were a little TOO much so - they seemed very 'busybodyish' and kept darting out from all corners to ask us what we were doing and where we were going, whenever we emerged. Perhaps they were just trying a bit too hard to be nice, but there was nowhere to hide! We are quite shy and just wanted to be left alone - so couldn't relax for our entire stay. I noticed that a lot of the older people seemed to enjoy this mundane chit chat but we (in our 30s) found it intrusive and annoying. Especially at breakfast. Maybe it's a generation thing.

The large communal rooms were all spotless and very light and airy - but so minimal, they had a bit of an uptight-feeling (the newspapers had those big wooden frames on to stop you taking them away! As if you would). It was all kind of the opposite of cosy - we didnt feel like hanging about too long and reading a book or whatever - especially when the hosts were liable to pop up at any moment to talk!

We actually got the feeling over our two night stay that one or both of the hosts might be a bit O.C.D or at the very least, VERY into cleaning (which isn't their fault but difficult when you have to cater for others) as there were lots of rules and regulations and they seemed to fuss a lot and march about all the time. You aren't actually allowed to take any drink but water into your rooms because of the white carpets - which do look pretty - but it kind of ruins the whole point of a hotel stay for us. No wine in the evening and no tea in the morning! Bah. No fun.

MOST importantly, (take note if you are there for a wedding or party), you have to ring the doorbell to be let in in the evening, forcing you again to make conversation, even if you're tiddly/feeling romantic/tired and just want to slope off to your room. One one occassion, we came in just after 1am on a Saturday night and the host seemed angry we were so late, telling us off for making noise in ringing the doorbell (we wouldn't have if we'd had our own key!) Very, very weird. After that we felt a bit offended/scared of him/embarrassed.

A point of personal taste - considering the age of the property and look of it from the outside, we felt the house had been stripped of its character a bit inside. You wouldn't know, once inside the house you were in a period home. There isn't much personality, especially in the dining room which feels a bit MFI. I was surprised to find it's a restaurant in the evening. It must be quite souless (even if the food is tasty, judging by the breakfast). Or maybe they do something cosy with candles. I don't know.

The rooms cost around £140/night, which, even with the high standard of room/food, felt expensive for the Isle of Wight (by the way, don't be mislead by the neat little table on the website, it's £68/£73 per person not per room - we didn't realise that until payment - a nasty surprise!)

I think in short this place is possibly more for older people who like an extremely high level of customer service/attentiveness/advice at hotels (love of water and early nights a bonus), but I would advise younger guests or those after somewhere cosy/character-ish to look elsewhere on the island...

This was a revelation. The enthusiastic reviews already published on your site were fully justified by our experience during a recent week-end stay. Even a drizzly, cold February start did not dampen our spirits once we crossed the threshold into this welcoming haven of great hospitality, with its impeccable renovation, fine Danish furniture, Scandinavian art, judicious house memorabilia, great bed-linen and fine food. Gert and his staff are to be complimented on the quality of their establishment. We wish it continued success.

Room Tip: Room 1 is truly magnificent, although the bathroom itself is a trifle small, and the shower not for...

We had three excellent, relaxing days at this charing small hotel. We loved the uncluttered decor, the warm welcome and hospitality, the great food and wine. A small team works hard to create an effortless sense of calm luxuriousness.

It's a lovely location which - even in chilly February - was warm and comforting. Food is fresh, local, served with flair, and well-judged.

We had a superb time there and strongly recommend it.
