We stayed at Hillside from Monday - Friday in lovely sunshine in July. We had a great time. What we liked about it was:
* the style of the place - great look and feel. Quiet (we went shoeless) and with beautiful views
* the food. We had lovely breakfasts and also ate there on three evenings. All of the meals were lovely - the Steak and linguine were fantastic
* the drinks - brought to and served at your tableside. Beautifully presented and served. They were inexpensive and very good quality (recomend the Bondera and any Dr Loosen wines)
* The rooms - very stylish again. Confortable beds. Clean bathrooms and magnificent views
* The service - second to none. Gerd is the best host we have ever experienced and every other member of the team were delightful and efficient

Room Tip: We stayed in room 4 - it was great Beryl, Anne's Mum, stayed downstairs in room 12 which was ea...

We stayed for three nights with a group of friends. Though not cheap, we all felt that we had more than received our money's worth. The location is excellent, the rooms are bright, comfortable and clean and, above all, the service is second-to-none. Special mention must be made of the meals we had in the restaurant and associated bistro (just a few minutes' walk from the hotel). These were absolutely superb, as was the accompanying (and far from overly expensive) wine.

We stayed for a week, the owner and his team were superb nothing was too much trouble. The food in both the restaurant & bistro was excellent & we will certainly be regular visitors in the future. The room was very comfortable and the hotel, a lovely listed building, commands a lovely position overlooking the sea, We loved the paintings throughout the house and the helpful team that made our ruby wedding stay so enjoyable.

My partner and I stayed at Hillside just after Easter and couldn't have been more impressed. On a bitter week-end the rooms were lovely and warm, the décor unique, the food fabulous and the staff friendly and helpful. A wonderful hotel.

This was our fourth visit to the Hillside, and everything is as perfectly pristine as on our first visit. Ho Gerd manages to maintain everything like this is a mystery! Even the pale coloured carpets are spotless.

I won't repeat the content of previous reviews, but there are some noteworthy additions to report.

The conversion of the "stables" has been completed (although we didn't have a chance to see it) and now houses a two-bedroom suite which would be ideal for a family of four. We did get a tour of the newly converted apartment above Gerd's Bistro Restaurant in the High Street and it is breathtaking. Furnished as perfectly as the main hotel, this is a two-bedroom apartment which is available for weekly rent - the lounge is magnificent with a high ceiling and wonderful furniture, and there is an excellent deck-patio. The access is via an unprepossessing door and along an alleyway which doubtless will be refurbished sometime ... and it needs to be ... but the location is ideal for access to the lovely Ventnor beach - just 50 yards from the top of a steep winding path down to the sea.

Breakfast at the Hillside is lovely, but I still think Gerd has the dining arrangements a bit wrong even though guests have the option of dining at the Bistro on most days. Dining at the hotel is (for my taste) too rigid and restrictive.

But this remains one of the finest quality hotels I have stayed at anywhere in the world.

Room Tip: My clear preference in ternms of spaciousness is Room 1.

My mother and I have just returned from a bank holiday weekend at Hillside, and were very impressed. Gert and the rest of the staff were extremely welcoming and helpful, and nothing was too much trouble. The hotel is very well-maintained, with lovely gardens and bright, clean rooms. We also ate at the Hillside Restaurant the first night of our stay. The food was delicious and the service attentive. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to others, and would definitely stay here again in future.

Room Tip: I stayed in a single side room on the second floor which was perfectly serviceable. My mother staye...
