“Perfect Hotel!”
Reviewed 4 September 2013

My girlfriend and I have just come back from a short break on the Isle of Wight and, I've got to say, this hotel was perfect! It was easy to find and when we drove up a lady came outside to welcome us which was the first tick in the box. The room was fantastic. When I booked I asked for a room with a view and wow did we get one. Facing straight out to the sea; it was superb. Everything was perfectly clean and tidy. Nice size with en-suite; I think the mattress and pillows were memory foam which were very comfortable.
After returning each day from excursions around the island (I'd recommend Seaview, Carisbrook Castle and The Garlic Farm) we were welcomed by a staff member opening the front door to us on our arrival which I love and were swiftly offered refreshments. Perfect attention to detail like this was obvious throughout our visit.
Breakfast was great with a fine selection of cereal, toast, pastries, fruit and cooked items ordered from a waiter/waitress. The first morning though I did order a small English breakfast but was informed they had no beans and the waitress didn't know what fried bread was. But I had porridge with honey instead which was fantastic.
We dined at the restaurant for one night and the food was lovely. The pate starter was really something! The wine list was extensive but only one wine of both red and white lists had a half bottle choice (as opposed to a full bottle). Obviously catered for couples but as we didn't fancy drinking a bottle I asked the waitress for only a glass of something and she brought through one which was very nice. Though I can also recommend The Pond Cafe just a ten minute walk away.
It was apparent over the break that it is mainly older couples who stay at the hotel; I myself being 23 did make me think we were the youngest people staying here by at least 30 years. I don't think this should be a turn off though; all were pleasant people (we even bumped into some away from the hotel too). I can fully recommend this hotel to any couples who are coming for a holiday.
The attention to detail, service and all the small touches really do make this hotel a rarity.

What a wonderful short break we have just had at the Hillside. We live on the island so it was only a short drive for us, but it could have been anywhere. Everything was top notch, from the welcome from the friendly staff, to the setting. It will certainly be somewhere I can recommend, but also to retreat to when we have had a busy spell. Room 9 was great as it had wonderful views over the sea and a lovely big bathroom. I would love to go back but for a little longer next time! xx

Room Tip: Room 9 had lovely views of the sea

We stayed here for 2 nights at the end of August and it was simply wonderful.
Everything about the place is a delight. It’s a perfect blend of modern Scandinavian minimalism with English country house comfort. The white walls are the ideal backdrop to the many stunning paintings and sculptures and the bedrooms are light and airy with amazing sea views. There are many different rooms and spaces to sit and relax and a huge sunny terrace overlooking the gardens and everywhere you look you see the sea! We can’t decide whether Hillside is a fantastic boutique hotel with a great restaurant or a fantastic restaurant with great rooms. Either way, it’s a winning combination.
The owner Girt was charming, great fun and a great host .We were invited to share ( at no cost!) more than a glass or two of Picpoul de Pinet with him and his friends on the terrace the evening we arrived .The wines served at Hillside are worthy of special mention. It’s clear that Girt is a wine buff (but definitely not a wine bore!) and he stocks a fantastic limited selection of great quality/great value wines. On the second evening we ate in the hotel restaurant and tried his Bandol as an aperitif followed by an amazing 2007 Margaux. All at extremely reasonable prices. (Honestly!)
The first night of our stay we wandered down the hill into Ventnor and after a saunter along the promenade ate at the Hillside Bistro in town, also owned by Hillside. It too has the trademark minimalist/artistic style and though different, the food was every bit as good as the more French based Hillside restaurant – we tried the Guinea fowl, braised ox cheek/steak and bouillabaisse, all delicious – as were the wines.
In summary, Hillside is a very special place to stay. The rooms appear a little pricy but this is more than balanced by the excellent great value food and wine at both Bistro and Hotel restaurant and the fact that breakfast (which is also fantastic) is included in the room rate. As a place to stay for a couple of nights it could not be bettered so stay there before it becomes too popular!!

Room Tip: Not sure if all rooms have a sea view? You'd really miss out it you didn't check

Beautiful thatched hotel overlooking Ventnor with view to the sea. We were welcomed at the door by Gert on arrival although I'm sure he regretted carrying our very heavy suitcases! Mum and dad had a room on the ground floor which was perfect for them with views to the sea and no stairs to climb. I loved our room (Room 4) - the beds, bed linen and chairs in the bedroom were so comfortable and the room was spotless and light. The interesting artworks on all the hotel walls were always a topic of conversation. Excellent food and my dad kept going on about how lovely the breakfast was. We had a meal in the restaurant on the first night and this was excellent. There are no tea / coffee making facilities in the room but you are provided with bottled water. Tea and coffee can be ordered and taken in any of the beautiful communal areas. The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. I have already highly recommended Hillside to friends and hope to return.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view

Just returned from a wonderful long weekend in the Isle of Wight.
From the moment we arrived to the time we left. The host, Gert and all of the team at the Hillside Hotel couldn't of been more warm, welcoming and attentive, nothing was to much trouble.
The rooms were bright, clean and contemporary with views of the sea.
We cannot forget to mention the cuisine at the restaurant and bistro which was a delicious delight!
Such a treat and hope to return again soon.

What a total joy it was to find a hotel on the south side of the Isle of Wight that combined Scandinavian style with warm English hospitality - excellent food and rooms in an atmosphere of quiet sophistication. The staff was extremely helpful and service minded in all aspects. We will certainly recommend it to friends and family and really look forward to returning as soon as possible.

chosen from trip advisor because of the fantastic reviews [apart from the odd less than 5star rating which I find difficult to believe in this case]. We wondered how it would match up. While like so many have already said this is an absolute gem.A period building which has been totally restored with a modern interior-this works so well. Gert the danish owner is rightly proud of what he has created and it is a privilege to stay here and submit to the care of a lovely team. Nothing is too much trouble. We there for 3 nights. Ate one evening in the Bistro [also owned by the hotel] and twice in the hotel-the standard of the food was superb on all three occasions-the wine list smallish but comprehensive in choice and very good value [the white burgundy was so good we had it all 3 nights! ]. Our room [12] on the ground floor spacious with massive windows overlooking the sea.
Gert leads his team by example-everyone seemed to share his ethos of care and attention to detail without hurry and with such a friendly manner you feel like you are special guests in his home.
