Storm force winds and rain alternated with fleeting sunshine during our four night stay. That didn't stop us walking on the coast or on the Downs. Luckily Gert was utterly unfazed by muddy boots and wet walking gear. Walkers really are welcome and after exposure to all that weather, the comfort, warmth and informality of Hillside is the best possible antidote.
This is an ideal place for lovers of out-of-season English coastal towns and there's no need to take a car. We travelled from London to Portsmouth by train, then ferry to Ryde, and from Ryde to Shanklin in incongruous London Underground carriages to Shanklin. The whole journey took just over two and half hours. From Shanklin a good bus service runs to Ventnor, passing in front of Hillside, or if you're lucky Gert might meet the train…..More
