“Perfect Stay”
Reviewed 10 March 2011

I have long used the trip adviser website as a tool to decide where to stay, but our wonderful weekend at Hillside has inspired me to post my first review. We stayed for 2 nights and chose to eat dinner in the hotel both nights.
From the moment we got out of the car we were made to feel welcome and like we were the most important guests they'd ever had! The building itself has been lovingly restored to an extremely high standard exposing the heart of what is a stunning building, it has been decorated and furnished clearly by someone who has an eye for design, reflected in the bold colourful abstract paintings and well placed coffee table books. The entire hotel is kept spotlessly clean throughout, and although it is very modern in design, is warm and very comfortable to relax in.
Check in was seamless, we were shown up to our top floor room with a lovely view of Ventnor and the sea beyond, like we were old friends. Our bed was super comfortable and was home to, soft gorgeous fine quality linen ensuring an excellent nights sleep for both me and my partner.
The food was delicious, you choose between a meat, fish or vegetarian menu and dinner starts promptly at 7pm I can honestly say it was some of the tastiest food I have ever had the pleasure of eating.
The real stars of Hillside though are the owners Anna and Gert, and their staff (most notably Britta who was brilliant) who all seem to be able to read your mind... One minute I think I fancy a cup of tea, the next Anna is there asking me if I want one! They got the balance of friendliness and privacy exactly right, resulting in service worthy of a 5 star hotel but without the pomposity which so often accompanies that level of attention.
When we left, we genuinely felt as though we were leaving friends, not just a hotel. Hillside thoroughly deserves my 5 star trip advisor rating, in fact if they had a special 6 star rating they would qualify for that too, as they genuinely go the extra mile for every single one if their guests!
Thank you so much Hillside, we will definitely be back for our baby break ASAP!!!

We visited for a short stay in the low season and came here on the basis of good reviews. We weren't disappointed, the house is calmly, tastefully and thoughtfully decorated. The food is tasty, brilliantly cooked and includes lots of homemade / local elements. But the big 'value-add' here over and above most hotels is the really care and attention given to 'serving you'. Even the way the owner served our drinks to us in the lounge was so detail-conscious and kind that it made us feel really 'looked after'. The owners seemed to realy want to know what you wanted and needed and to try to provide it. In responding to our requests, they broke their own 'rules' on two occasions - this contradicts the tone of the very few negative reviews which describe a strict and uptight place, this couldn't be further from the truth.

We were enjoying a child-free weekend and so liked the calm, grown-up tone of the place. Younger people and teenagers might feel more restricted here. But overall, would recommend it to anyone seeking attention-to-detail, a friendly welcome and quality in every aspect of your stay.

We stayed here for a few days in December, and it wasn't a nice experience. The owners are extremely conscience of the cleanliness and pristineness of the B&B, and make you feel uncomfortable, and not particularly welcome. You are not allowed to relax and have a drink in your room - not even tea or coffee. Everything is very regimented, with no consideration for the needs of the guests.

We ate in the dining room one evening, dinner was at 7pm - no chioce or discussion into the time. The food was average, there are much better places to eat in Ventnor.

We would never stay here again, there are much nicer places to stay in Ventnor, including The Hambrough, which makes guests feel welcome.

We have told all our friends about our awful experience, and advised them not to stay here.

This reviewer has never stayed at Hillside.
Hillside is a small establishment and we know the identity of all our reviewers. Of all our December guests that could fit this identity, all have already posted reviews.
This review comes 3 months after the claimed stay, the reviewer has not responded to our contact via TripAdvisor, and TripAdvisor are unable to provide documented proof of stay.
Hillside strongly supports honest and objective reviews which can help fellow travellers and establishments alike, but to be fair, this has to be based on guests who have experience of the establishment they are reviewing.
Hillside strives to be clean and pristine with emphasis on good service and a warm welcome. We do not have an alcohol licence that extends to bedrooms, and we serve all drinks in our common areas. Hillside have a daily changing set menu (with the choice of a meat, fish or vegetarian main) which is served at 7pm Monday-Saturday - this we confirm to all guests in advance so the timing should come as no surprise.

What a wonderful hotel!

I visited this hotel with my mother and father back in October.

My parents had a beautiful ground floor room overlooking the gardens and the sea. I had a top floor room a view over the side garden - just perfect.

The food in the restaurant was delicious - both dinner and breakfast. We ate in the hotel on the first night of our stay but ate out the other evenings. We have always liked to try new places to eat when on holiday although we were very tempted by the wonderful food on offer.

The hotel is beautifully decorated and very well maintained. The rooms are very modern and fresh and the beds incredibly comfortable. Every evening we enjoyed sitting in the lounge, reading - and I particular enjoyed it with a glass of wine in hand. On the evening of my father's birthday we celebrated with a cake and candles in one of the beautiful rooms.

Anna and Gert were wonderful hosts. We were well looked after and felt very welcome.
They were very accommodating to our personal requirements (my father was poorly) which made for a truly wonderful stay.

Mum and I will always have very happy memories of our stay - and we are so pleased we chose this hotel for our final holiday with my sadly now deceased father. Thank you very much for being such wonderful, kind hosts.

We have just returned from a weekend at Hillside and would highly recommend.

The property has been lovingly renovated and to a high standard. The owners have an eye for interior design and are keen for their guests to have an enjoyable experience.

Dinner at the hotel was generous with a number of homemade items and locally sourced produce. It was the same at breakfast time.

Prices for drinks were reasonable and the selection was well thought through.

Housekeeping standards would rival those of any five star hotel.

The location is perfect for a weekend on the island.

Our hosts and their staff were engaging, polite and friendly.

Well worth checking in!

To give some balance to this review my only comment would be that check out at 10.00 am on a Sunday morning - a time when people want to lie in and have a leisurely breakfast, relax and read the papers - could be reviewed by the owners.

We have just spent an excellent weekend at Hillside to mark my husband's birthday; we had a great welcome from all our hosts who showed real interest in our needs and comfort. Loved the room with its view high over the rooftops to the sea - though does mean puffing up the hill having been out for walk! Breakfast and dinner were excellent. Top marks to the chef, especially for so many home-made items. Cant wait to return when the weather is even better.

I booked a short stay at Hillside for a relaxing break with my wife. It was one of the best stays in any hotel I have experienced. The hotel is amazing, extremely stylish and comfortable. The beds are the best I have ever slept in, and the whole experience the most relaxing. Top this with two hosts in Gert and Anna, who really really know how to make you feel welcome and at home. On leaving I genuinely felt they were as sad to see us go as we were! Breakfast excellent, and highly recommend eating dinner at the hotel restaurant, great food, cooked and served with real care and passion.
