As very regular visitors to wonderful, quirky Ventnor we have visited the Rex a few times in the past. Good but fairly pricey which often meant it was quite quiet. However a revised a la carte menu and the most excellent set menu of 3 courses for ONLY £12 during the winter months (excluding Christmas) means locals and visitors are in for a real treat. There is a choice of main course but we started with generous hot cauliflower soup with accompanying sun dried tomato bread. We both followed with beautiful and generous baked cod in a lemon sauce on a bed of creamy parsley mash, attractively garnished. Dessert was a super crème brulee. An absolute BARGAIN for fresh, quality cuisine and served on smart white china with a white linen napkin. Good coffee was accompanied by a simply delicious chunky almond biscuit freshly cooked by Kate, of the Undercliff Bakery who cooks there on Mondays and Tuesday and assists the chef on other evenings. Good selection of wine starting from £14. An unexpectedly great evening and we shall definitely be back. However this is not food for those in a rush so be prepared to make an evening of it. Lovely setting overlooking the green, natural coastline of Ventnor Bay.

This restaurant is perched over looking Ventnor Bay. The food was excellant and made even better by the waitress and Rex himself.

We were heading for somewhere else when we saw this restaurant and decided to give it a try. We weren't disappointed! The food was good - as long as you are not in a hurry because there did seem to be a long wait between courses. However the wonderfully charming owner made up for it and when the music started...well I would have waited all night!
Musicians just dropped in and started playing (the norm on a Tue night we were told). Wonderful Jazz and Blues, singers, musicians. My feet were tapping, body swaying, fingers clicking.
One of the best nights we have had - a good enough reason to return to Ventnor.

This was our second visit but sadly it was not as good as last year. The tuna was good but accompanied by a strange julienne salad. My partner enjoyed the baked hake. The boss fussed round us remembering us from last year, we will visit him again next year

Just come back from a wonderful meal at the Rex Bar/Restaurant with my mother. All food had was delicious (except one Creyvette which I left as it appeared undercooked but the others were all fine and very tasty). My mother commented especially on how fresh her soup was. Both the waiter (who I believe is also the owner) and waitress were very friendly and welcoming, although the waitress seemed a little clueless, not knowing what I'd asked for when I said the creyvettes, not knowing what the soup of the day was nor the specials (there were only two, hardly a lot to remember).

It was just a shame that the whole time we were there there was only one other table occupied, and they left not long after we arrived. Whilst this was not the fault of the restaurateur directly, the atmosphere was not exactly brilliant as instead of the sound of other diners chatter we could instead hear the bored waiter and waitress having a conversation with another man who did not appear to work there. Also despite the name the pianist only comes on Saturday evenings, the waiter told us this would be at 7:00pm however I overheard him telling the other man that the pianist was unlikely to turn up before 9:30pm.
