“Pleasant staff and clean but dated and in disrepair”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 July 2009

The staff were extremely pleasant, helpful and welcoming. The location is wonderful - excellent views over the english channel and a short walk into Ventnor and to the beach. It provided for a quiet and very relaxing stay.

However, as seems to be generally the case with the Isle of Wight and especially its hotels, it really needs some serious investment to keep people coming back. The decor in our room, as in much of the hotel, was very old and tired looking. At the top of the stairwell was evidence of an old wall that had been taken out with no repair to the carpet. The outside of the building had peeling paint and rust streaks down the side and our bathroom had a poor shower and an enameled bath with a number of chips in it.

The cooked breakfast was good (excellent sausages) although the advertised continental breakfast was lacking. The evening dining arrangements were disappointing - children under six are not allowed in the dining area in the evening and the menu was not available until about an hour before service.

I will state at the outset how very charming and most pleasant are the relatively new owners Mr & Mrs Baldwin. True gentlefolk. Also the staff are friendly.

However why the Baldwins, in middle age, should have bought, as their first hotel venture, this large and extremely run down hotel remains a total mystery to me.

Bedroom. The decorations are at least a couple of decades old. Furniture and carpets extremely shabby and old .
Bathroom. Cracked lino floor. No shelf for toiletries. No loo paper holder. also decrepid and old.

We were offered different rooms which were slightly better, but still in a similar state of decay.

Food. Very plain and at times poorly cooked. It could not be classed any higher than "adequate".

No form of even elementary dress code for the guests in the dining room in the evening.

.Everywhere we looked there were signs of total decrepitude, cracked plaster, wallpaper hanging off etc. However the hotel is kept very clean.

What was provided and offered most certainly did not merit £85/day.( 1/2 board). It falls far below what one might expect from a 3 star hotel.

Although we had booked for one week Mr Baldwin kindly let us depart on the 3rd day, and we found another hotel in Ventnor which was considerably more suitable.

This hotel has so much going for it. It is a fantastic building which has a great deal of potential - we believe it is being improved all the time. The staff were very friendly and happy to help. Our whole experience was one of great family fun, with all our needs covered. Great facilities include a tennis court and outdoor swimming pool, toys and games for the children. Evening entertainment was varied and all very good. We had a really really good bloke singing on our first night and he tailored his material to our group and made a great evening even better. The food was again of good quality and variety to cover everyones taste. The management are making a good job of running this hotel.

Apparently new owners took over about 18 months ago. They are really nice people (as are the staff) and they have some great ideas for developing the place. The problem they will face is the amount of capital investment required need to bring the hotel up to date. Whilst the owners are making a start with this, there are still large parts of the hotel that have a predominance of dark wood panelling and dated furnishings remeniscent of the 1950s/60s. Because of the building location (on the side of a steep hill and with no lift), disabled access is not easy because the bar and dining room are down a steep flight of stairs from the reception level. The bedroom was also "dated" in decor and had one of the smallest bathrooms I have ever seen. The restaurant has considerable potential, but comprises about 30% seating and 70% dance floor, with a small stage at one end (I understand the hotel hosts a lot of weddings). There are some small things that could be done to improve things - for example, better toiletries in the rooms, serving white wine cold (and offering a wine cooler or ice bucket with it) and the breakfast yoghourts were either Tesco or "Happy Shopper" brands - so they were from the local supermarket. The latter does not fit well with the image portrayed of "local produce".

I really hope the new owner's enthusiasm and warmth towards guests will enable them to do something special with the hotel. They deserve to succeed, but they will have to spend a lot of money to do it.

I just spent a short break at the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

The hotel had a very friendly atmosphere, is warm, clean and served good fresh food. Staff were friendly and provided service that you would expect in a 4*.

The approach to the hotel is deceptive; it's set on the side of a hill, and you approach from the very rear of the hotel grounds. The grounds and the views from the (true) front of the hotel are outstanding, looking out from the top of some cliffs over the English Channel, it's both quiet and relaxing. The grounds are well kept and have an outdoor swimming pool, tennis court and a small but effective pitch and put golf course. The pool was closed (it would have been too cold for me in December), but in the summer months, it would have been worth a swim or two. There are steps down to the sea which I did use, and from there I went for walks along the sea shore.

On the downside, the hotel is perhaps not suited for the less mobile because of the hillside location, but on the upside the location, with its views and grounds, is stunning.

All round good value and thoroughly recommendable.

We stayed at the Ventnor Towers after Christmas and over New Year. it was our family's third visit to the hotel in the last 18 months and it gets even better each time! We wondered if there would be enough to do in such cold weather but the first surprise was that this corner of the UK seems to have its own micro climate. There was lots of sunshine and we were able to walk along the coastal path each day.
The hotel was warm and cosy and the food really is delicious! The highlight of our stay was the New Year "Moulin Rouge" Party. This was truly wonderful! We wondered if the six course meal would be too much but each course was delicious and the evening rattled along. Everyone was given fifty pretend pounds for the "Casino" set up in the adjacent room. This was good fun and something different to do during the breaks in the meal. There was a disco which played a wide range of music and we guests were encouraged to request tracks. Why don't more discos do this? The dancers who came on just after midnight were fantastic. They did a non-stop 45 minutes with more costume changes than we could count, finishing with an excellent Can-Can routine.
The whole atmosphere of the evening was lovely, and a credit to the hotel staff who were worked so hard.
After a very late night we enjoyed a late "brunch" before leaving the hotel after a very relaxing and most enjoyable stay.
I really feel that this hotel has something special, along with the fantastic location on the cliff top. I can only describe it as that "personal touch" which ensures we relax and enjoy!
