This place as such potential to be much better than it is at present. I suspect they rely on the overspill of clients from other establishments. The beer and atmosphere was good but the staff trying to serve brunch and drinks were struggling as there was enough of them to cope. Unfortunately, the visually presentable full English breakfast did not live up to expectations as it was cold. Maybe I just caught it on a bad day. I wouldn't dash back but I hope they pull things around for the staff's sake.

The outside dinning at the Mill Bay provides you with spectacular views over the ocean. Food good, service adequate.

Ordered 2 halves of Yates Undercliffe expecting a light refreshing drink, only to be served a cloudy, sour and undeniably dead product. More worryingly, the barmaid didn't understand what could be wrong, claiming it was only put on a week ago!!! She even showed me the barrel in question that had a best before date of December 13th and it was good for a month when opened.

Having explained the fine art of real ale management and limited shelf life of cask ale (3-4 days) and that the date on the barrel was when it should be opened by, she conceded it might be why she was having a lot of wastage and a number of returns. Shame on the Yate's rep for not giving guidance on cellar and beer management.

Wasn't offered a refund or alternative. In the circumstances, I decided not to try the Ringwoods Best Bitter but had a nice cup of tea instead. The place has been done up nicely since we visited a year ago, but we didn't try the new restaurant which looked very attractive. Perhaps they are concentrating on the food and not the beer.

Couldn't get into the Spyglass so tried here ... obviously newly refurbished ... but had to wait over an hour for our food - and 3 couples asked for their money back after 1 and a half hours and their food still wasn't ready. It's summer ... get more staff so that others can enjoy what was, in the end, a nice meal in an excellent spot.

Looking for a suitable place to eat with 2 children on a Saturday night in Ventnor is not easy. Having tried several other places that were either fully booked or were advising on a 45minute wait for food, we ended up at the Mill Bay.
Being a sunny evening, the dining room terrace doors were open, and an A-board outside advised that food was being served however it was difficult to know what sort of food and whether the quite nice looking dining room was actually attached to the slightly moth-eared looking pub adjoining it. Once we had established they had room for us (at 7.30, there was only one other couple in the dining room itself...) we found a table and looked at the menu.
The choice was typical pub grub, however all reasonably priced and although the dining room was a bit bland, it was clean and comfy. Our food came quickly and we were pleasantly surprised by the portions. I had scampi and chips, and often you are lucky to get a handful of pieces of scampi, however the scampi made up almost half the meal! It also came with a small side salad, artfully arranged in a single lettuce leaf, and comprising tomato, onion, pepper and cucumber, along with the single piece of crisp lettuce (I like lettuce so it might have been nice to have a bit more, though I like the idea!).
As we ate our meal, the dining room filled up with other people, including a number of other families and larger groups, which I suspect some of the other promenade-based restaurants would've struggled to accommodate. Which is perhaps one of the best selling points the Mil Bay has.
All resorts need a variety of establishments, and whilst it's a great compliment to the many others that they are so busy on a Saturday night, it is also good that places like the Mill Bay remain, that cater for those who turn up unannounced, just wanting a straight forward family meal in a clean environment. If this is you too, give the Mill Bay Inn a try!
