This hotel has been around since the eighteen hundreds but someone has spent a lot of money on it recently. The whole hotel is very clean and tastefully decorated. The rooms and layout are all individual but cannot be faulted - apart from to say that I would have prefered a duvet rather than sheets and blankets. The staff too are friendly and efficient. However the best bit about the Royal is its food! Fantastic! Local produce and a very skilled chef. The pork tasting plate, the duo of lamb and fresh lobster were all big hits not to mention the chocolate dessert creation and passion fruit souffle. Don't venture out to eat away from the hotel - its just not worth it!

Whilst early in the holiday season, so the Hotel was not particularly busy, the Staff in all departments were charming, and couldn't do enough for us. Food was excellent, and we were offered additions to their set menu, if required.
The charming garden next to the hotel building was secluded and quiet, and the area overlooking the bay spectacular

Room Tip: It is worth paying the extra for a superior room

There aren't a lot of good hotels on The Isle of Wight and this must be one of the best. I usually stay in more expensive places (at other destinations) and have to remind myself not to complain about the lack of air conditioning, bath robes, etc. One isn't paying for that level of accommodation.

Our garden view family room was freshly, if somewhat boringly, decorated. The bed was very comfortable. We had a view of the sea as well as of the lovely gardens. A road runs in front of the hotel but it's not a busy one and the small hill garden on the other side of the road also belongs to the hotel.

Both gardens are well looked after. The main one has a play area (swings; sand-pit) for children and a pool which was almost unbearably cold (it normally opens from May). Communal parts of the hotel are smart, well maintained and moderately grand without being luxurious.

Breakfast was a bit limited. It would be nice to have something that's fun: an interesting bread or pastry or an unusual cooked option or a do-it-yourself muesli perhaps. But everything I needed was there and a good fresh fruit salad made specially was on the menu: nicer than the usual communal bowl of stuff.

Tea was made with tea bags but came with a jug of hot water in addition to the tea pot, so I mark it as better than average.

The hotel prides itself on its food and has a couple of AA rosettes. I found the food agreeable but not all that special. I wouldn't mind eating here repeatedly though. I would call it a safe choice rather than an interesting one.

The staff are a delight. They seemed very happy and relaxed yet eager to please. There were a couple of minor mix ups over a lunch order and a table reservation but these were sorted out without any fuss.

We called in at The Royal because it had been highly recommended to us. The Hotel what we saw of it looks lovely. We were not staying at the Hotel.

We went to reception to ask to see a classic room; we were given the key and the directions, not shown to the room…which to us was strange. There were two people on Reception. The lady did not call anybody to show us a room which is the norm.

We went to the bar and ordered a pot of tea for two and paid. The milk jug was delivered but no teapot. Twenty minutes later I sent my husband in to remind them. The person told him they had just gone to do it as they had been busy. No System?

A waiter came out and asked us if we had paid for it?. We still had not got the tea!

We did eventually get the tea, but were not impressed with this service. You should not have to chase up and to be asked if you had paid!

This was not the weekend or Easter. The Hotel is pretty impressive, can't comment really any further.

Room Tip: Lovely gardens and the room we viewed was fine.
