“stylish and comfortable bedrooms, good seaview and food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 September 2012

We really enjoyed our stay Monday to Friday at this old-fashioned but stylish hotel. Bedroom elegant and lovely decor. Comfortable beds and good modern bathroom.Lovely view over gardens to pool and sea beyond. Staff very friendly and helpful.A lovely retreat from the normal busy world! It is relatively expensive but well worth it, for such a peaceful and relaxing stay. We would definitely come again.Food a bit rich for us but excellent quality and fish dishes amazing. A hotel for the discerning traveller and we have travelled extensively. A bit of a find - a jewel in fact. The staff booked room, dinner and ferry crossings for us at relatively short notice, very efficient and helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a seaview room the higher the better.Go for a premier room as separate adjoining sitting roo...

We went to the hotel for a long weekend with our 15 year old daughter. It is a pretty hotel in a lovely position overlooking the sea below. It has pleasant gardens at the front and a lovely smallish outdoor pool. Just across a very small road in the front of the hotel is another lovely terrace and garden . Our room wasn't huge but very pleasant and had a separate area and bed for kids as well as a sofa bed and own TV. It also had a fridge and we were given complimentary water each day. For dinner on the first night we ate in the main restaurant. It was a little formal but food was nice (book in advance the time you want otherwise you will end up eating very late or very early). On the second night we ate in the brasserie which for us was nicer with a lovely menu - it also meant we could eat outside which was lovely. We also had breakfast outside on the terrace. The staff we friendly and helpful - we left something in the room and by the time we got home they had emailed us and sent it to us in the post. My tips would be in the summer to ask for a room higher up if at the front to avoid the noise of people eating outside - not a huge problem but worth it. If you want traditional then eat in the restaurant - less formal then the brasserie.

Booked a room for a work colleague visiting the island on business, 4 days in advance. Was charged a reasonable room rate for 1 night but had to cancel due to other work commitments and advised the hotel, providing more than 24 hours notice. I was told that if they could not rebook my room then I would be charged 50% cancellation fee, which was stated on the booking confirmation, sent by email. (Unfortunately I was not informed of this when I made the initial telephone booking). I was sent a very nice email saying how sorry they were that the room could not be booked and that they would have to charge me a 50% cancelleation fee. This is the first time I have been charged a cancellation fee when advising a hotel more than 24 hours in advance, and I must have stayed in close to 1,000 hotels!! I did advise the management of this by email and suggested they make it their policy to advise customers of their cancellation policy at the time of booking but they did not respond. For this reason, I will not be making future recommendations to friends and colleagues unless everywhere else is full. Does not live up to it's reputation.

This is a lovely venue for anyone who appreciates the finer things in life. We stayed with a group of Rolls Royce friends who had booked on our recommendation as we have visited it twice before and all enjoyed their stay.
As an older hotel the rooms do vary in size, so some people might not be happy to have a smaller one but we had a very nice room with a comfortable bed. Everywhere was clean and we found the staff to be most helpful.
The food is excellent, beautifully presented and tasty. The breakfasts are cooked individually and served quickly. The hotel owner came to the tables on our first evening to introduce him self and make sure everything was in order, a very nice welcoming touch.
Bonuses & Niggles: Complimentary parking is available both opposite the hotel and behind although there are steep steps to reach the rear car park. However loading and unloading the luggage car can be done right at the front door, and staff will assist. Complimentary wifi is available in the main part of the hotel but not in the rooms.
As the weather was good the outside swimming pool was being well used and looked most inviting set in lovely well maintained gardens. The terraces were well used by all the guests where we appreciated the views over the bay.

Room Tip: Room 6 was a good size and handy on the first floor

Have since discovered a place to stay that is ideal for the younger generation but also at equal price with modern updated luxury! Niton Barns. The Royal Hotel have very small rooms for the price tag. Staff are not friendly or helpful especially when you first check in. For it having such reputation one would expect to at least be taken and shown your room. Decor is old fashioned from the Victorian era and I understand this is what they are aiming for but some paint at least would not go amiss. The gardens are indeed lovely and picturesque but then so are the Botanical Gardens. I would in future stay somewhere else. I would be looking for a larger room, peaceful atmosphere but not that of a retirement home. I am guessing the manager will have an impertanant reply!

We are an old fashioned hotel and we pride ourselves on being one of only 30 establishments in the UK to be listed in every Michelin Guide. Our guests are all ages and we are regularly praised for our family friendly atmosphere and charming staff but I do understand that we may not appeal to all tastes and I am sorry that you didn’t enjoy your time with us.

All the best, William

Have just spent a few days at The Royal Hotel over the August Bank Holiday and couldn't wait to let others know about the wonderful experience we had. This stylish, elegant hotel and grounds are beautifully maintained and its efficient and friendly staff made our stay so happy and relaxing. The food was varied and delicious and the family friendly atmosphere was extremely welcoming. if we hadn't had commitments to bring us home, we certainly would have asked to extend our stay.

Thank you for your review and in particular noting that we have a 'family friendly' atmosphere. It is a real boost for the staff to hear such compliments and we appreciate the time taken to submit feedback.

This is our 5th family break to the Isle of Wight and The Royal Hotel is the best place we have stayed by far. It has an elegant atmosphere though not too stuffy for our lively children. The food was really outstanding. The children's menu had a good choice - perfect for their tastes and the main restaurant is really special. The menu was varied with interesting daily specials and everything was beautifully presented. The wine list was extensive and the service excellent. The garden are really beautiful and the heated pool (not fenced!!) was lovely. The only thing that might stop us from booking again as a family was the absence of a children's lounge. I appreciate that this hotel is not especially aimed at families however, as the weather was typical for the UK summer, we ended up driving around in the rain trying to find somewhere warm and dry to amuse the children. If we could have stayed at the hotel playing board games etc when the weather was bad, it would have been perfect.

Room Tip: Our room though described as a family room was really too small for 5 people. It also faced the back...

Thank you for your review - and for mentioning our food. The chefs are so busy this time of year and work extremely hard to ensure all dishes are 2 AA rosette quality. As you can imagine when you are serving over 100 covers in the summer this is quite an achievement. It's great for them to hear such good feedback.

We were thinking about having an area that can be used for children - especially during inclement days and will be talking about this in our next planning meeting.

All the best,
