“A wonderful slice of luxury on the beautiful Isle of Wight.”
Reviewed 12 October 2012 via mobile

I felt compelled to write a review for the wonderful Royal Hotel in Ventnor. I'm a long time Trip Advisor lurker and reluctant reviewer, so the fact I am reviewing should speak volumes!

Everything about The Royal screams class, the service is impeccable, the rooms are very well appointed and the food is outstanding. I've stayed in some very expensive hotels in the past and this is comparable with some of the best.

We visited the Royal for Sunday lunch last week as they have resurrected Sunday lunch. I had the crab starter and roast beef, both were delicious, the crab starter especially.

I spotted someone posted a review about children, this is a rediclous point. There was a family with a few younger patrons but it certainly wasn't a problem. In fact the hotel did a great job at keeping the balance between calmn luxury for those of us that like that type of thing and family friendly.

For the price the Royal is exceptional, frankly they could double it (I hope not) and it would still be brilliant.

We will return both to stay and for lunch and I urge you to do the same.

This was the first time my husband had experienced afternoon tea. We were on the Island for the weekend having a break from the kids. We had booked a table for 3.00pm. We turned up slightly early and were happy to wait for the booked time. We were asked to wait in the bar. It was apparent there was a big lunch happening in a room situated behind the bar. The barman was shocked when we walked in and asked if we needed a drink. We explained we were waiting for our table for afternoon tea and that we were a little early (10 mins). He showed us to our table which was in the main entrance hall next to the door. The weather had turned and it was starting to chill slightly outside. The heating was not on!! A bunch of children obviously with the lunch party had decided to play and scream and shout on a landing just up from the reception area. This did not stop for the duration of our afternoon tea. The waiter at 3.05 came and took our order for tea. This came promptly but then we sat there until 3.20 and no food arrived. We were under time pressure as we had a ferry to catch. This was our last port of call before heading to the ferry. I had to approach the waiter to ask when our food was going to arrive. He explained that they were very busy with the lunch that was happening in the hotel. I explained that "that was not my problem. We had a booking for afternoon tea at 3pm offered by the hotel!" Shortly afterwards he arrived with our food and that of another table who had also been waiting. The time now was 3.30pm. We had to leave in less than an hour to get our ferry so we got stuck in. The food was very nice. Lots of little roled sandwiches and lovely cakes. Too much to eat in the time now left alas! The children were still screaming and playing. What ever happened to music playing and a lovely calm ambience?? Oh well, lesson learned do not go for afternoon tea if they have to cater for a big lunch because you are not cared about. We paid our bill and left. I will never bother again! The Savoy etc. in London has nothing to worry about!!!!

Our afternoon tea is widely regarded as the best on the island and we are committed not only to providing delicious cakes and sandwiches but first-class service as well, however we obviously failed you and for that I am sorry. It is always awkward when guests children misbehave and usually we do alert the parents so they can address this - on this particularly day we had an incredibly busy service - 80 covers for Sunday lunch - and also we were a couple of waiting staff down. This is no excuse but it did make service challenging and resulted in delays for you and for that I can not apologise enough. Thank you for your good comments about the afternoon tea itself. We do hope you will return.

Its a little like stepping back in time but its done so well and so very well preserved. This was our second stay at The Royal. Once staff realize you are staying they warm to you and really cant do enough. Our room this time was a bit on the small side, too much furniture, but spotless as was the bathroom. Our real reason for a return visit was the food , which once again was amazing...all the way from Canada for the food...cant be a bad recommendation.....Well done The Royal...we will return.

Just returned from a 5 night stay at the Royal.

The quality of the food, service and rooms was excellent. We were particularly impressed with the food. There was a good choice every evening and the service matched quality of the meals. I tend to judge hotels by the quality of their breakfast, particularly the scramble egg, and this was first class at the Royal.

The sea view room was comfortable and quiet.

The bar staff were attentive and very helpful

Ventnor is very hilly so you also get some exercise to work off the effects of the great food.

I am so pleased we passed the 'scambled egg' test and that you enjoyed your stay with us. Thank you for mentioning the food offering - we have once again been included in The Good Food Guide and shortlisted in the Good Hotel Guide. The chefs are extremely dedicated and use local food where possible.

Starting with the the booking process, nothing could have been simpler than dealing on the phone with the Royal's reservation staff. We needed a room near the lift for accessibility reasons and this was no problem. They were able to help with the ferry bookings which made the whole process one stop and amazingly simple. The booking email arrived very quickly and was perfect in all details, including directions on how to find the hotel.
Hotel is very comfortable with public areas well furnished. The rooms are well presented with some interesting colour schemes; ours was a blue and cream/white scheme, which complimented the sea view.
We booked half board. The breakfast was excellent with a good range of cereals fruit and pastries and an excellent choice of hot breakfasts. The evening meal menu offered a good choice, lots of local produce and the food was beautifully cooked and presented. The wine list was excellent, particularly the "bin end" offerings and we were able to enjoy an excellent Rioja at a very reasonable price.
Overall a very enjoyable four nights' stay and we would happily go again.

Room Tip: Sea facing gives the best views and better light.

We very much enjoyed our four night stay at the Royal. They have an excellent restaurant featuring local seafood, and large and comfortable public areas as well as a bar which has its own menu. The staff were uniformly friendly and helpful. Our superior room had a sea view and was comfortable but was on the small size with no fridge and no w-fi, but was otherwise fine. Some might find the decor of the public areas a little on the dull side, but everything was clean and well maintained.

Thank you for taking time to post a review, we do appreciate it. I am very glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. I notice that you mention our seafood. We are very lucky to have access to some of the best seafood in the UK and we work with local fisherman to bring our customers fresh fish everyday. Earlier this year we showcased this bounty in a 'Celebration of Seafood' - we hope that working together with local fisherman we can help protect and maintain fish stocks responsibily.

Ok so it's not cheap but you don't want to be one of those types who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing do you?

Maybe it's a special occasion place then.
For luxury it scores the max - especially if you like things done properly. The food is faultless and everything is just right.

Saturday night room overlooking the garden. Turn up sat afternoon, lounge around drinking a few beers, some coffee, galley bagger cheese scone high tea that's two perfect scones cheese grapes walnuts tea for two then dinner for two, three courses, sea bass on citrus cous cous (what else?) beef fillets with triple cooked chips, souffle starters cheese board pannacotta pud, coffees, wines, beer, luxury bed and bath and a fab choice of you name it breakfasts. Did I miss anything? Oh yes. £265.

Worth every penny.

Yes, Queen Victoria did occasionally drop by for afternoon tea - one had to be on top of things in those days as if she found her tea disagreeable she was prone to throwing the cup across the room! Today we pride ourselves on looking after all our discerning visitors and I am glad to say we have not had any cups flung this century - though we did witness the rather peculiar phenomena of the Earl of Grantham tweeting about his ‘terrific food’ – that’s new-fangled technology for you!
