“A Disappointment”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 September 2008

This hotel could be great if it could overcome the strange and serious flaws that we encountered.

The positives about the hotel are as follows:-

It was clean – rooms, bathrooms and common areas
It was in a great location
The food in general was very good
Service and attitude of the female staff
Organized ferry and this worked without fault

The negatives:-

It was populated by 80+ all of whom seemed to delight in talking about their bowels; it was like staying in the hotel of embarrassing illnesses.
The hotel seemed to be geared up for old people and made us (just under 50) feel like 2nd class citizens.
The method of seating in the restaurant – very bizarre and quite unlike any other hotel I have stayed at.
They allow dogs in rooms
The attitude of the male staff – arrogant and not helpful.
The breakfast fruit buffet was very disappointing and on Friday morning seemed to have run out of fruit.

I was told that the hotel is aiming for a target market of 30-40 year olds but unless they change things I cannot envisage that they will get much repeat business from this age group.

This is possibly my favourite hotel in the world. It helps that Ventnor is one of my favourite places in the world, but the Royal is a little world all of its own. From the moment you turn into the drive, you enter a haven of calm and comfort. This is everything a seaside hotel ought to be. The beds are unbelievably comfortable, the rooms luxurious in an old-fashioned way, the staff both friendly and efficient. Also, the gardens are lovely and one thing I particularly like is the glass-covered verandah, which means that if, god forbid, it should rain, you can still spend the whole day sitting outside, with a view of the lawns and flowers and the pool.
The front-facing rooms have a view of the sea, which is beautiful.
So is anything wrong with it? If anything, it would be that children are tolerated rather than welcomed with open arms. My children love it there, but I always have the feeling - though I can't put my finger on it - that if I don't keep them very neat and tidy and they're not on top behaviour, we'll get the cold shoulder. Since there's a hefty charge for children sharing a room with two adults, this is rather annoying. Having said that, there is a baby listening service that enables very nice child-free and worry-free dinners in the excellent restaurant.
This is a really good, weather-proof seaside break and if you hit good weather, as we did on our most recent stay, you'll pretty much think you've died and gone to heaven.

I stayed for three nights the food, ambience and level of service was first class. Reminded me of hotels of years gone by when service was paramount.

My room was first class as was the decour and in fact everything was to a high standard.

It is also pet friendly as I was able to bring my mini daschund with me, albeit at a charge.

Will stay again.

We decided at the last minute to go over to the Island and stay the night. We had to 'phone the hotel dorect as it was such late notice, but they were very helpful and booked us in and said that we could have an upgrade to a garden room.We checked in really early the next morning as the room was free......lovely light room, good size bathroom...all very clean. The staff through out were very friendly and helpful. We ate in the restaurant in the evening.....the food was excellent and the choice wide.Breakfast also really good after a wonderful nights' sleep in a superbly comfortable bed!
We would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a relaxing, comfortable stay with unobtrusive service in pretty grounds.

Reminded me a little of Brideshead Revisted with its Edwardian style conservatory and decor. Lovely rooms, comfortable and cosy...but the Royal's crowning glory is its dining... superbly prepared and excellently presented and served. I heartily recommend a stay if only for the nostalgia !!!

Pleasant reception area and a friendly receptionist. Tatty - that was the main opinion with regard to the room. It had a sea view fortunately, but the carpet, general decor and bedspread were in need of a complete revamp. A couple of other rooms I checked after complaining about our allocated room had obviously just been decorated so were better. However we stayed where we were due to the view. It was disappointing that the room was so poor, but the writing is usually on the wall when the lobby carpet changes as you leave that area and begin to climb the stairs. Breakfasts were entertaining in that most of it seemed to be offered to you reluctantly. For example, on asking for a mixed fruit salad we were told that they weren't sure we could have one, even though it was on the menu. The menu also said help yourself from the buffet but there wasn't one. The evening meal was very good, both for cooking and for service. Overall if you don't mind a bit of tat and do like traditionalism, you may like this place. It's pricey considering all of the above.

A very well-kept and carefully presented hotel. Public areas are lovely, furniture is of high quality and the rooms and breakfasts are as one would expect from a hotel of this grade. Service impeccable, both from the reception staff and in the restaurant. Expensive, but very good.
