“A royal stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2014 via mobile

Staying at the Royal is a truly exceptional experience. The food is fantastic and the service is top notch. It's like being transported back to a more elegant time. The only criticism is the rooms are a tad on the small size. We will return

We stayed for one night and really enjoyed it. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the hotel is clean and rooms are comfortable. The situation is very peaceful. We ate in the hotel and the meal was well cooked and very well presented. The cooked breakfast looked good but the continental was rather limited. Good find

Unlike a previous review, we have just had an excellent 5 day break with our 10 and 12 year old boys. There were at least 4 other families with kids of all ages from under 1 to teenagers. The staff go out of their way to accommodate everyone's needs- nothing is too much trouble. The rooms were tastefully modernised and very comfortable. We had booked a garden view room but ended up in a sea view one- fab! The quality of the food, the presentation and the service in the restaurant was great. The gardens were beautiful but the kids were still able to kick a football around without anyone complaining. The pool was warm and again the kids were able to play in it without any hint of disapproval. It is an easy walk from here to the botanical gardens, Steephill Cove, Spyglass inn and the beach. Our whole family thoroughly enjoyed the stay and would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Room 40 was a great sea view family room

We were attracted by a special 3 night deal at the hotel and we were not disappointed. Room was very comfortable as the public areas.

We found all of the staff to be very friendly and helpful.

The food is excellent; we had the six course tasting menu one evening and ate in the bar in another. Both meals were great. We also had a picnic lunch one day and this was also very good.

A note of caution... Ventnor has some very steep hills. it's a short walk from the hotel down to the beach but it seems a long way back up the hill!

So my wife and I booked the Royal in July as a last minute weekend break. Great reviews, and great dinner / ferry / bed / breakfast deal made it an attractive option. The hotel is beautiful. Old world Victorian charm, wonderful gardens, stunning views, large rooms... It was a pleasure to stay in.
Every effort has clearly been made to maintain the property and grounds to an exceptionally high level. Not only that, but the property has been sensitively modernised in a way many old hotels just can't seem to do.

But I had a few issues which are only relevant if you are a younger couple, and / or you have kids. It's a hotel for an older generation. With perhaps 100 guests there was almost no one below 50. My daughter was one of only two children in the whole hotel, and we were tolerated rather than welcomed.
Don't get me wrong, no one was rude. The staff are incredibly professional if not a little humourless, and the clientele are wealthy upper middle class couples in the full swing of retirement, so it's unimpressed looks you get rather than direct comments.
I don't blame them at all by the way. They have come for a sophisticated weekend of dignified relaxation.
But have a 1 year old intent on screaming for eggs at full volume whilst rubbing toast in her hair over breakfast!
Confusingly, The Royal have tried really hard to make kids welcome. There are swings, a sand pit, a toy box in the garden, a heated pool. They even do a baby listening service so you can have dinner in peace. Amazing!
But I m not sure why they do all this. The hotel belongs to happily retired people out for some fun, in a setting which reminds them of the good old british days.

A quick note on the food. It's exactly what the clientele would want, and I enjoyed it all. It's fussy, and of course ridiculously salty (I don't know anyone over 50 who doesn't love salt), but well executed.

So a long review, but firmly aimed at young families. If you are anyone else reading this, GO without hesitation. It's beautiful and magical. Even if you are on the younger side, you won't be disappointed.
I am so pleased we went, but I don't think I ll go back until I retire!

We eat and stay here frequently even though we live on the Island. The building is well looked after, the staff are incredibly professional and helpful, the food is exceptional and the drinks well priced. We even got married here!

There is a healthy mix of visitors, the hotel does appeal to a maturer clientele and it's because of that we love going there, it provides a very relaxing and calm atmosphere.

Most of the reviews on here are excellent with the odd grumpy one, please go with the majority because it's a fantastic place to visit!

Beautiful hotel - building, grounds and rooms were lovely to look at and be in. The gardens and verandah were a particular treat. We stayed in room 47 for three nights and room 31 for one night. The views from both rooms were described as "garden view" and they overlooked the lovely garden. However, that description did not do it justice as we also had a spectacular view of the sea, also.
However, we did feel as though we had checked in to a retirement home as very guest seemed to be of a certain age. We were assigned a dining table upon arrival and were not allowed to change throughout our stay. The evening meal was c£40 per head and there was no alternative bar menu available while the evening meal was being served in the main dining room - i.e from 6.45pm onwards.

Thank you for your review. We cater for guests of all ages, not just the ones 'of a certain age'. We believe that age is just a number, we try our very best to give our guests an enjoyable stay no matter what age range they may fall in to.
Our Restaurant does get very busy and we will endeavour to move people's tables if they are not happy with the one they are allocated, if we are made aware of this.
We offer a table d'hôtel menu in our restaurant and this is also available in our other dining areas, where you may wish to dine from our smaller 'A little more choice' menu (or Bar menu if you like), Bar snack menu or also our daily specials. I apologise if this was not made clear to you during your stay.
