There is a lovely charm about The Royal. Beautifully maintained, with welcoming, friendly and helpful staff. Perhaps "Old English" is an apt description but definatley not stuffy A perfect choice for a special stay away - fabulous restaurant - we ate in the conservatory - great relaxed atmosphere, excellent food and service. Presentation as always - faultless.
We love it ! Our third stay and looking forward to the next!

The only hotel to stay at if visiting the Island. I travel routinely throughout Europe and Asia, the Royal is up there with the best I've stayed in. I found the staff always ready and willing to help. The food is first class, particularly breakfast, (freshly made to order, no awful self-serve buffet).

Me and my family have stayed in many hotels around the world, however we have only returned to very few, The Royal in particular. Tomorrow we are leaving for our 13th visit in 7 consecutive years. It is perfect for a simple, relaxing short break with outstanding quality, or for a longer summer break. Although it may seem expensive it is worth absolutely every penny. Within our first few stays we had become good friends with all of the staff, who will bend of backwards to cater for anyone's needs. The food is exceptional, as are the quality of the rooms, particularly with their recent improvements. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing break with outstanding quality and no worries at a reasonable price.

I spend a lot of my life in hotels and restaurants and this hotel was really quite jaw droppingly excellent. The staff were personable, charming and helpful and the food was the opposite of what one might expect from an English provincial hotel. The dining room was lovely and on our last evening I counted how many staff I could see at any moment and it was usually around 10. They ask you to reserve tables at specific times so the kitchen's performance is consistent and nobody waits too long. Every dish was well thought out, beautifully prepared and presented. Fish was not overcooked which is amazing, the quantities were exactly right and the whole enterprise had a touch of real class. The wine list was short but imaginative. The rooms were comfortable (we had a standard room only) and the beds were good. The public spaces were very pretty. The pool and the lawns were lovely and they would bring you tea and excellent teacakes for a very modest price. Overall, I find it hard to believe this is the third best hotel in Ventor with only two rosettes as we have stayed and dined in many much posher and certainly much much dearer establishments without being as impressed. There was also a good mix of families with children and older visitors and couples on a break. Lastly the comment about detail - this is what makes a place really good as opposed to satisfactory, and the Royal Hotel really did this well. Perhaps it's not being part of a chain and having a local owner who actually cares what his visitors think and hopes they will return. We shall.

the hotel is beautiful outside. the gardens are amazing, the pool is nice and the kids area is wonderful. i loved the location and the resturant staff was very friendly. what i didnt like was the rooms were not very clean and the beds were the worst! i think my boarding room beds were better then these beds! we couldnt sleep. the front desk help were less then friendly or helpful, so we checked out three days early. over all i would not come back to this hotel but i would come back to the area.
