We have to give this hotel full marks for the recent visit we made. The staff were so helpful, hardworking and friendly and the hotel itself so tastefully decorated and comfortable.
The meals were delicious and combined with the elegance of the dining room made every meal a special occasion. The breakfasts were especially pleasing to myself, with quality ingredients, beautifully cooked.
Although there was a large wedding on the Saturday that we were there, the staff, who had to work so hard that day , were still happy and attentive even after 12 hours of work in some cases.
We will return to this lovely place again.

This is an ideal hotel for a quite week-end or holiday break. It is well run, the staff are attentive and the service excellent. Rooms are clean and comfortable. The restaurant is attractive and the food is very good indeed. The hotel is well placed on the outskirts of Ventnor within walking distance (down a steep hill) to the beach.

In the past, when on the Island, we have dined at the Royal but never until September last year (2009) stayed there. On that occasion it was a four-day delight.
This year there was a gap in our diary and we decided to return for a long week-end which coincided with Valentine's day.
I have read the previous moans and groans on the TripAdvisor site and wonder what the writers are moaning - they must be on a different planet.
We have found the hotel a place of calm and comfort. The staff are attentive and caring.
Food: The saying "You eat with your eyes" is only too true. Breakfast, bar meals, and Dinner were a sight to behold and a delight to eat. The fish dishes are exceptional and a mark of fine selection, preparation and cooking
Valentine's evening dinner was exceptional - all of the staff seemed to be enjoying making our evening and that of the other guests and diners a memorable occasion.
Our room was well cared for, as in the past, by a family team of room attendants who take a pride in their work (no grey line in-between the edge of the carpet and the skirting board: I always use this to gauge the care and cleanliness of accommodation).
Our requests to the staff were always promptly attended to.
The proprietor, Mr William Bailey, was in attendance to oversee the running of the hotel and was readily available. Lindsay, the manager, made sure all ran smoothly and the Chef enquired of us as to what we thought of his food. Superlative is the answer.
At the top of the garden a patio-style area has been constructed and from there is a view over Ventnor harbour and across the English Channel (sunbathing or ship spotting? - your choice)
With my experience ranging from twenty-two bed barrack room dormatory accommodation to that of 5*-plus hotels I have no hesitation in commending and recommending the Royal Hotel and its staff.

Stayed for one night and had dinner and breakfast. Both were excellent. My room was very nice and the bathroom was spotlessly clean. Check-in/out was very smooth and courteous. A lovely hotel.

We stayed in a superior front garden room which was a bit ordinary with an average bathroom (but I understand the back rooms are worse). The overall experience was relaxing with discrete helpful service; but maybe a bit pricy for the quality of the room. The food at breakfast was wonderful, but the other clients were so demanding and grumpy that the service became defensive and slow trying to accommodate them.

We had cycled from the Ryde ferry and the hotel were happy to have us turn up in our casual clothes, and treated us with respect.

The location was good on a quiet spot, just above Ventnor. We dined at a great local pub (Ale & Oyster, a short walk down a steep hill) which served seafood (lobster for £16).

This was our first stay at The Royal hotel, although we had previously been for lunch and enjoyed the food and service. It is a lovely hotel set in beautiful, well kept gardens.
Check in was smooth and the staff were charming and helpful. The room was well equipped, tastefully decorated and clean.
The evening meal was first rate with plenty of choice for us both and the wine selection was excellent. Faultless and attentive service made the evening one of the best meals we'd had for some time. Breakfast in the morning was superb with a wide choice of continental and cooked breakfasts.
Overall a fantastic hotel well deserving of its reputation and accolades. I couldn't recommend it more. We'll definitely be back.

This hotel is a hidden gem with great staff, fantastic food and great location. I have used this hotel over the p[ast 6 months and from the first time I stayed they have remembered my name, what room I prefer and where I like to sit for dinner, I know that might sound sad but when you travel a lot you know what this means!
The food is outstanding !
