“We liked this hotel - lovely sea view”
Reviewed 7 June 2012

We stayed in room 5. Lovely view of the sea from either sitting in the bath or when laying on the bed. Fluffy soft towels and slippers provided which was much appreciated. Bed comfortable and firm. The room was quite adequate and clean. We would recommend this hotel. However what spoilt it for us was we paid for a nice room with a balcony and on our first night we were really annoyed because other guest were smoking on their balconies and we had to keep our door shut as the smoke was blown into our room. The Wellington restaurant we found pricey. We were lucky to find a great place to eat on the sea front (The Ale and Oyster) where the food was very good, freshy cooked and a reasonable price. The Wellington Hotel breakfast was adequate but not what we would expect for £120 per night. On the upside the reception and all staff very friendly and helpful and they offered great personal service.

Room Tip: Ask for room 5 it was lovely. Make sure hotel stops people smoking on their balconies when you boo...

This is a 3 star hotel and so I've rated it on that basis otherwise it would have had a lower rating!

My husband daughter and I stayed for 2 nights over the Jubilee weekend in a family room (Room 16). This was a triple aspect room with very good views over the sea. I would imagine that this is perhaps one of the larger rooms.

The room was is need of a hefty makeover but saying that it was clean apart from parts of the carpet. The kingsize bed was rock hard and I had to use a spare quilt over the mattress. My daughter who's 11 had a blow up mattress on the floor. We paid £132 per night which was expensive but it was the jubilee weekend and I guess most places would have hiked the prices.

The bathroom was ok although you really had to watch the shower as it alternated between cool and very hot. (They had put a warning about this on the wall but in my mind, if there's a problem, why not fix it?).

The breakfast was hot buffet, the usual eggs, bacon, tomatoes and you had the opportunity of ordering something different at an extra cost.

After our first night, I asked the hotel if they had a mattress topper and was assured that something would be done. Later, arriving back after a day out, I was told that they had put another quilt on top of the mattress. As it turned out, they hadn't done this as it was the quilt I had placed there earlier. I didn't make a deal out of this but it was annoying.

The staff were all pleasant and generally I liked this hotel.

One word of caution, the hotel is located at the top of Ventnor so fairly steep (the views are good though) - could be more difficult for some people. Good job I gave up smoking last year!

we stayed in room 10 which is a super deluxe with a balcony, the room was fairly small but was big enough for the 2 of us there was a dressing table with a flat screen tv there was also a hairdryer in the wardrobe. The view was lovely in the summer will be even better we stayed from 18th - 21st May and was quite cloudy some of the time. Breakfast was good you help your self to the buffet of fruit toast cereals and fruit juices before you have a full English. The staff down in the restaurant were very nice.
There was not a lot of parking but we managed to get parked right outside every night. The reception staff were also very nice and helpful and always said good morning as we walked past on our way to breakfast. The manager is also very nice he chatted to us a few times when we were out having a cigarette which i think is good as some hotel managers dont really speak much to the guests and leaves to other staff.

overall the hotel and the staff are brilliant and i would recommend The Wellington unless you have a difficulty with stairs as there is a lot of them. :)

Upgraded to a deluxe room when making the reservation. On arriving it became clear that this only guaranteed a seaview, which was a very beautiful view, however the room was small. Ive stayed in some Premier Inn's which had bigger rooms. When I asked to move room, I was shown another room in this category, it was larger but dark and had a large tree in the way of the view. So I would recommend spending time booking direct and discuss room types if you can. We were in room 18. Ideally the next floor up would have been my preferred option, however, no other rooms were available. Room 18 is also above the restaurant, so noise was a problem, twice I had to ask for music to be turned down 11.15pm on a Sunday and 7am on a Monday on both occasions it was the staff playing the restaurant music too loud when setting up and clearing down. No offer of discount for this which I find poor. £120 per night B&B (Small portions - 1 slice of bacon and 1 egg?). Service in hotel other than in reception was received by helpful but inexperienced young girls. We ordered some champagne for breakfast and it was her first time serving it. It surprises me in this day and age that owners are happy to leave their business in anyones hands.

Stayed here for 3 nights in a "Superior" room as part of a party of 12. The rooms were clean and well appointed, although the balconies were rusty and in dire need of a lick of paint. Beautiful views but the way the hotel is built into its cliff-side location means a lot of stairs to climb whether up to reception or down to the restaurant - perhaps not best for the elderly. Management and staff were really friendly and helpful. Food was very good although some items appearing on the menu were often in limited supply. Lack of car-parking space is a major downside. Don't arrive in a Chelsea Tractor!

We had a superior deluxe sea view room which we were very pleased with. Spacious, very clean, with very good ceiling lighting. Panoramic view with sweeping balcony. Helpful and friendly staff.
We ate in the restaurant, which also overlooks the sea. Excellent fish.
We had a very enjoyable time. Only disadvantage is that parking is limited. It states there are 10 slots on the street, but more realistically, 5-6. We were alright, but there must have been plenty of others who were unable to park by the entrance. The hotel is on a narrow street, as with the rest of Ventnor, built into the side of the hill. You go downstairs to the rooms, including dining room.

Room Tip: go for the best

We stayed here for a quiet night away from our 4 year old and had a great stay. The room had a balcony looking out to sea which had loungers on the balcony. The room could have done with some TLC but it was a quiet place and amazing view.

In the morning breakfast was on the outside terrace and there was lots of choice and it was magnificent. I would stay here again if on a budget.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony and make sure you get to breakfast
