“shabby grubby not shabby chic!”
Reviewed 8 September 2013

The hotel was in much need of a face lift, the outside was untidy litter, overflowing bins and debris piled up at front. There was clearly a lack of house management. the room was fairly clean but the carpets were dirty, We had a fabulous sea view but the balcony rusty and unclean. The stairs to the restaurant were dirty and dangerous as it was coming away from the stair carpet grips. The breakfast was ok but the self service area had food splattered wall! Shame really as the best positioned hotel in Ventnor , we stayed 31 Aug-2 sept 2013 but will not return, very very over price at £120 PER NIGHT !!

Very nice receptionist but working with difficult material. My wife is partially disabled and we did not expect the quantity of stairs we would have to negotiate, with poor or non existent handrails. This hotel is not disabled friendly. Even our room had 5 steps up to the ensuite and a partially sunken bath which was difficult for the able bodied. Room was good and clean with a sea view, but only a partially opening window, secured presumably to stop guests climbing out onto the roof - as you do! The breakfast room was more steep flights down to a pleasant sun terrace and restaurant which was entirely self service. Even coffee - go and make it yourself - was in a half warm carafe. Toast was all self service. For this price bracket this was too much, basically a free for all. Food choice was OK but not great. We had a much better breakfast at a budget hotel The Esplanade - see our review - in Clacton. Parking is also a problem, no disabled parking, very limited guest parking, (and we did warn the hotel before we arrived), and I ended up parking in an un-restricted street about 1/3 mile away. Because of the stair problem we had to cancel our 2nd night but the helpful receptionist made no issue about it and understood our problem. We think she generally needs more support from the manager/owner. She also got our late night drinks with a smile.

Room Tip: Ask for room with ensuite on same level.

The hotel could do with a make over as it feels a bit stuck in the past. I had a very pleasant stay and the balcony rooms are great as well as having breakfast on the terrace. Unfortunately we had to change rooms every day of our stay, but this was due to the busy period and our last minute booking.

Fabulous view from our room which also had a large balcony Super Delux room 20! Noisy as it backs onto the stairs which go to the bar, so lots of people going up and down the stairs early in the morning and late at night.

Room was clean and adequate, with the most stunning views. Hotel carpets where dirty and the hotel is general a little tired! The hotel has a relaxed and informal atmosphere, service was friendly, but lacked proper trained staff who could speak good English and who had any knowledge of the menu items. Our bill for a dinner for two was £98 ! very expensive for what we had, the wine was delivered to the table open and wasn't even what we had ordered. The Wellington Lacks style and quality, such a shame because the view really is so perfect, infact for the view we would go back. We would not dine in the hotel, that's for sure. Not because the food was bad but because it is so very over priced!
The hotel has so much potential- Invest some money to smarten it up!

Room Tip: Room 20 or the room above it has a fabulous large balcony

My husband and I have just come back from a 3 night stay with our 5 year old daughter, to celebrate our 10th Aniversay.
When we first saw our room we were surprised at how large it was perfect for our daughter to set up her own play area and even made a den for herself.
The view is breathtaking - we used the easy access to the beach and were touching sand within minutes very handy.
We ate in the restaurant on two nights food was lovely and Mario's idea of serving my daughters main while we had starters was genius as it meant she was still eating when our main arrived allowing us to enjoy a meal without fuss.
We had glorious weather which always helps - clean rooms comfortable bed - the room was serviced every day with a top up of coffe etc. and left neat and tidy.
Breakfast buffet in the morning was excellent with a wide variety of English and continental to choose from.
My daughter was treated lovely by the staff members which made us and her feel special.

We will be back! Already planning for next year.

Mrs Telford

Room Tip: You have to get a balcony room the view cannot be missed

I stayed here for one night with my girlfriend and very much enjoyed it. Great location with a short walk from the beach. Had a lovely view of the sea and room was very clean. Staff were friendly and had a great breakfast in the morning in a buffet style. Could not find a better place to be situated on the Isle of Wight. Only thing I would say is that at night people walking around was very loud in our room but not so much that it kept us awake.

Stayed here recently for two nights as it looked lovely from the pictures, however our room which was number twenty had badly stained carpets and was certainly not spotless, the other problem we encountered was noise people running up and down the staircase outside our rooms like a herd of elephants early in the morning because the breakfastroom and restaurant is on the lowest floor. All we wanted was a relaxing weekend away from our busy lifestyles sadly we did not get it here .Staff were helpful and polite, there was a problem when the key to our room was lost and we felt we were being accused of losing it even though it was handed in at reception earlier on in the evening when we were going out.We were warned that car parking was an issue but its a long walk from where the hotel is especially if its raining. The view from the rooms with balcony is lovely which is why we paid £120.00 per night for b&b but the hotel is just looking and feeling a little tired and just requires some financial input and better planning of rooms etc.I don't want to be too harsh about the hotel as the staff really do try hard.

Room Tip: would not book room 20 as too close to staircase but all other rooms with balcony would be ok im sur...
