“Amazing venue for weekend away with friends”
Reviewed 28 March 2011

We visited the Hambrough in early March for a short weekend break and enjoyed a stunning meal and sumptous breakfasts at The Hambrough. During our weekend stay, we also visited The Pond Cafe and were extremely impressed. Ventnor is a fantastic location - we enjoyed a coastal walk to the beautiful Steephill Cove and Botanic Gardens and a short car journey to the Garlic farm to stock up on delicious products to take home. All in all, a wonderful short break - I would thoroughly recommend The Hambrough to anyone looking for a relaxing weekend away during which you will enjoy sumptuous food in beautiful surroundings!

Although this hotel/restaurant comes highly recommended from both TripAdvisor and Conde Nast unfortunately our stay and restaurant visit was a disappointing one. After trying to confirm an offer on a room with balcony and sea view, due to communication problems between staff this room was no longer available. We were offered a basement apartment - which needed 12 hours to heat up - it was almost unbearable. The apartment does not have a telephone link back to reception. 200 GBP for the night for this experience was too steep - although we did receive a discount after complaining several times and directly requesting a reduction in the room rate.

We also dined in the restaurant - the food was very good, however 3 hours for a three course meal was far too long, with some of the staff somewhat under-qualified for a Michelin star restaurant. By the time the main course had arrived our appetites were spent on bread and wine.

Stayed in Jan 2011. On arrival the room was freezing. They had just reopened after their winter break. Then the hot water wasn't on. This did all get sorted out but should have been checked before opening as being it had happened before. The room was very nice. Big and comfy. The view was good. What I didn't like was that you have to choose your breakfast the night before from a very small menu. Is it not fresh then? After choosing our breakfast and leaving the card downstairs we were later told that they didn't have what we wanted??? What the bloody point of ordering the night before. I wouldn't expect to order the night before in a bucket and spade B&B. Not for me. Oh, the grouting in around the shower was amateur hour.

The room were very classy and roomy. Ideal with a young baby. The cot was there for us with no surcharge. The hotel gave us some baby phone for our dinner. Everything was very clean. Decoration was quite nice and simple. Bed comfort was great.
The scenic view was very good. The hotel beeing on the heights of the village you have a great view on Ventnor beach.
The service was really good aways ready to help. We definitely recommend it with you children!

This is the third year that we've taken advantage of The Hambrough's February dinner, bed & breakfast offer. Living on the Isle of Wight, it's wonderful to be able to eat indulgently and not have to drive home afterwards. As it was nearing Valentine's day, we "upgraded" to the Valentine's tasting menu – all eight delicious courses. I had the vegetarian version, and found it excellent.
We stayed in Room 4, on the top floor, looking out to sea. I haven't tried any of the other rooms, as we've always been happy with this one and have requested it. Very comfy, with a lovely bathroom.
Staff were very pleasant. Laura-Jo on the front desk was extremely helpful right from our first enquiry through to some questions I had about the wine after we left (so nice I wanted to track some down to have at home). And the lady who has been front of house in the restaurant the last two times we've been has also been excellent.
I'll definitely be going back.

The Hambrough was faultless. Its been a few months since our stay but I had to come on write about it as we still rave about it to this day.
I honestly cant find fault with it. The staff were amazing, Laura-Jo at the front desk in particular was wonderful and she is a rising star in the hospitality industry in my opinion, and we got to meet Robert himself who was lovely. We took advantage of the breakfast in bed each morning which was just wonderful. Dinner in the Michelin Star restaurant was just blissful, the food amazing, service faultless. We also ate one dinner and one lunch at the Pond Cafe and these were superb as well - excellent value, and the gentleman running the Pond Cafe was a great host and couldnt do enough to accomodate my requests re the food.
We thought the Island just perfect and enjoyed just walking around, stopping for drinks and snacks here and there - had some beautiful crab one day and many a drink basking in the sun just watching the world go by.
I can honestly say this was just the most perfect long weekend, and we will definitely be back as soon as we have the time and fancy a little treat.

We really loved this hotel and our stay. We were upgraded to room 4 which had a beautiful sea view from the huge bath tub. The hotel was to a very high standard, very clean room, comfy bed, nice furnishings.
We also enjoyed a superb meal. We chose the tasting menu with recommended wines. We couldn't fault anything. We were totally stuffed and a bit drunk, but very happy when we went to bed.
Breakfast was to the same high standard as you would expect.
We will definitely be returning!
Thank you Robert and Diane.
