“Very disappointed by our meal.........”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2010

We have a home on the Isle of Wight i - and do not expect amazing food - we go to the island for its many other attractions and in particular sailing. However we booked to have dinner at the Hambrough having read the critics reviews etc. We were surprised by the the fact that nobody seemed to know we were coming when we got there. The dining room is more like the front room in an old style B&B with a reasonable sea view possible from two tables. We waited approximately 40 minutes to be given the chance to order a drink - which rather set the tone. The waiting staff were funereal at best and surly at worst. The food was OK - just. We declined to leave a tip and explained it was because it was one of the worst meals we had had - nobody bothered to ask what the issues were. I am sorry to write this review - as we had been looking forward to our evening there. My partner and I are very well travelled and have been fortunate to eat in many wonderful places in both the UK and abroad - so we have some reasonable experience on which to base a comparison. Every restaurent is entitled to the odd off-day, but this was really poor for an establishment that is marketing itself as a high quality venue. I also know that reviews tend to be written by people at different ends of the spectrum - very bad or very good experiences. Either way - it is how an establishment deals with unhappy customers that often makes things worse.

I very carefully booked dinner at the Hambrough after a recommendation from a friend and reading reviews. We found the dining room unimpressive and rather like sitting in an aged aunt's 'front room'. It took 20 minutes for the menu to arrive and by this time 3 men on a fishing trip at the adjacent table were in full flow and it was almost impossible to hear across the table. We had asparagus to start with which consisted of 4 cold stems. By this time an hour had passed and we had had 4 waiting staff but non-one seemed to be taking any responsibility for our table. We ordered a white wine by the glass which was so tiny it was gone in 2 sips. The main course of fish was very ordinary. By this time my husband was fed-up and ready to go but I persevered with a pudding which was large and fussy. A bad night or an over-rated restaurant I don't know but I won't be going back.

Picked this hotel a bit at random and weren't disappointed.
When we got there the street was full of cars, so we stopped outside to get change for the nearest car park. The chef/owner came out to move his car so we could park on the street.
The room was gorgeous with a nice lounge area, an enormous bed, and views of both the channel out front, and the hills behind.
The bathroom was too hot, but the radiator was adjustable, so we turned it off (why do more hotels not let you control the heat?).
Dinner in the restaurant was tremendous, with a really large selection of reasonably priced wines (plus a few not so reasonably priced ones). Seemed a bit forgotten about when we'd had dessert, but we weren't too bothered about that and just headed up to the room.
Breakfast (which had to be pre-ordered) arrived at our room (at no extra charge) on time and was large and perfectly cooked.
We hadn't been told a check out time, which left us feeling unrushed.

A party of 6 foodies went to stay at their “restaurant with rooms” for a weekend of indulgence and were not disappointed. Well appointed bedroom rooms. A slightly strange lounge/seating area but this small disappointment was more than made up for by the food and service from Robert Thompson that was fantastic with personal attention making it a great experience to be repeated. Our main meal, prepared to our request, started after amazing canapés with a starter of Dover Sole and Crab. Saddle of lamb was tender and succulent – beautiful. And a plate of various desserts including Passion Fruit soufflé and a small tarts etc was stunning. So much that we skipped the cheeses offered. Superb team of people. Wonderful experience. A areal break form city life with a view out to se and walks nearby that were just great

I really enjoyed my visit here. The beds are comfortable, rooms are nicely decorated and not sterile as I was expecting from some of the earlier reviews. There was a wall in our room which had a lovely bluey paper on it which does warm the room up. Coffee machine in the room was nice touh and the bathroom was the best thing. All amazing, I felt so relaxed and chilled out by dinner time that I had the tasting menu which was amazing price much cheaper than other michelin restaurants I have been to, Staff are all very good, with different styles, some friendly and warm others a bit more professional and discreet, all very helpful. Breakfast was amazing, brilliant view over the sea and very sunny room, the Lounge at the back of the property was nice but I dont have enough padding to sit on the seats for very long, so I used this as an excuse to go outside and ahave a cigarette. lol. very good rooms, food, staff. definately go back, its not the cheapest, not the most expensive either kind of in the middle offering amazing value.

Arrived at the Hamborough hot, sweaty and exhausted after cycling across the IOW from Ryde in July. (we are from London so this was a major achivement for us!)
Frankly we would have washed in a bird bath and fallen asleep on a washing line but thankfully the Hamborough is far from bird feed!

The lovely girl at reception helped us store our bikes in the shed and then showed us to our room which was stunning – great sea view, and arranged to make the most of it – with the sofa and fantastic huge bath facing the sea. All the amenities, soft robes, ok toiletries, flat screen TV, espresso machine (although why hotels still faff about with ground coffee machines as opposed to Nespresso is beyond me), fresh milk (nice touch) and great DVD library.

Booked in the resto and the food was fantastic. Service also very good. Only one small improvement would have been some soft background music to give the place a bit of atmosphere.

Breakfast in bed at no extra charge is a really nice touch. The Hamborough + dinner is not cheap! So the fact that they don’t charge you for bringing your breakfast up a flight of stairs is appreciated. The food was again– great eggs, full English and good coffee.

Yes the hotel is small and doesn’t boast some of the traits of larger hotels such as an army of staff, but it doesn’t need it, and it adds to the charm.

Definitely not a B&B as another review has indicated here. Yes it is pricey but we didn’t feel we had bad value for money. In fact the Hamborough was a significant part of one of our best weekends away in the UK!

Would definitely recommend and would come back.

We stayed in this lovely hotel and restaurant on the 6th of Oct.
It was just what we wanted so relaxing and the staff very friendly and professional.
We had dinner on the night , the food was fantastic with great flavours.....We have been to many restaurant but what we had here was really amazing...
To start we had smoked terrine of eel and my husband had the sardines with squid
for our main course we had the grouse and the dover sole with crab.Lovely food and flavours and we had a bottle of Barollo which was suggested by the Restaurant Manager.which was a perfect match for our main course.
On our departure we met Robert , really surprised to see him, such a young guy.
To honest he is doing a great job there , like he said he just took over this place over a year now with his team , got the star and 3 rosettes is just unbeleivable .Well good luck for all your hard work .We really enjoyed our stay here and we will certainly be back.
