“Lovely tasting menu”
Reviewed 25 August 2010

We were on a self-catering family holiday on the Isle of Wight but fancied a treat so we booked the Hamborough on the basis of its reputation. We booked ages in advance but on the day my husband called and asked if we could have a table in the window (there were 4 of us)and they said yes! When we arrived rather than being taken to our table we were led throught the hotel down various corridors and up some stairs to a very character-less room where we were shown the menus and offered a drink. I am not sure what the point of this was (do Michelin insist on a bar area?) but as we later discovered we had such a nice table I would rather have been shown straight to it. This is probably my only criticism of the place though. We enjoyed somenice cocktails and decided on the tasting menu. Book an early dinner if you decide you'd like to try this, it takes around 3 hours. We then treked back down to the restaurant.
The food from the cheesy profiteroles offered as canapes through to the last yummy chocolate pudding was divine. They obviously use the very best ingredients here, some courses are very simple such as the asparagus starter, but all were cooked to perfection. Quite the best pigeon I have ever tasted. The sommelier was very helpful and helped my husband choose between 2 wines when he couldn't decide in fact we had a number of different staff serving us, all of whom seemed very courteous and knowledgeable although personally I prefer to have the one waitress/waiter all evening.
All in all a memorable evening in very elegant surroundings. You wouldn't go every week, unless you have a sizable trust fund, but a lovely treat if you are visiting the island.

My husband and I went for a mid week break to the Isle of Wight. We picked the Hambrough based on reviews and a friend's recommendation. Hotel was all we were expected. We had booked the smallest room but it had everything we wanted and more, lovely decorations, comfortable bed and nice extras such as a bowl of fruit and free WIFI.

We dined in the restaurant on our first night and had a fantastic meal. Restuarant is quite intimate so was slightly concerned about the fighting couple in the corner but once the food arrived they were soon forgotten. We had the 3 course meal and then asked the sommelier to pick wines for us to go with our courses. He picked some lovely wines - I would definitely recommend this route if you are not a wine expert. For pudding lovers have the souffle! My husband had the cheese (cheese menu has huge!).

Ordering breakfast the night before is slightly strange but no real problem and breakfast was again first rate. Nice touch that you can have your breakfast in your room but as our room had only one seat we ate in the restaurant. One thing to note - we said we would be at breakfast at 8.30 but our cooked breakfast didn't arrive either morning till about 8.50. This gives your a fair amount of time to try out the buffet (fruit, cereal. bread) but if you were in a rush to leave you probably would need to make sure they knew.

All the staff were friendly and efficient.

All in all a great break - would be happy to go again.

Went there over the week end of the 7th August. We had booked online on their website, received confirmation back via email, and 5 days prior to arrival another mail was received again with furthermore details..nice attention.
We were on our Bike so we didn't have issues in parking just in front of the hotel.Hotel and restaurant have Prime location with unbeatable view.
Hotel was fully renovated or done last fall and still is immaculate. Receptionist was extremely kind, gave us all needed explanations we needed on both the hotel and the town. She even gave us the tel number of a nearby competitor restaurant. We wanted a seafood platter....The Ale and lobster on the seafront is the place to go if you want to treat yourself to such delicacy.
Bedrooms are fine, we were in room 7. Spacious comfortable with all you expected for such category of price, £210 BB per night. The only downside is the minor lack of attention from the housekeeping side. Silly water marks here and there...that shows as everything else is so nice.
Please put a curtain on the Bathroom door glossy window so we don't have the light from there waking us up at 5am....even the bathroom blind closed...
Bedroom door...invest in a proper door that is sound proof...not with 1/2 inch gap at the bottom..
Breakfast in room was great with with quality you expect from Robert Thomson's establishment. Fine with attention to details.
On the way down to check out (9am) you can find all the linen on the floor for the bedrooms to be cleaned.....bedsheet direct on the floor!!! You could avoid this couldn't you..
So overall 4 Stars soon to be 5!! Sorry the AA I was a bit tougher than you!! but may be you didn't see that.
Will recommend and go again....and may be eat at the restaurant this time.

It was with some trepidation that I arrived, after reading the last two negative reviews, but the food here was outstandingly good. My mother-in-law brought my partner & I here for dinner on last night of our ventnor holiday, and we all had the £110 A head tasting menu with wines. The staff were attentive, and the meal was perfectly paced, excepting a 10 minute pudding wait. The dining room is very small, but not like a front room; the decor is nice- modern cool grey wallpaper, sea view from two tables, which we had one of. I admit this was my first michellin star experience, but I fully enjoyed it, and would happily return.

We have a home on the Isle of Wight i - and do not expect amazing food - we go to the island for its many other attractions and in particular sailing. However we booked to have dinner at the Hambrough having read the critics reviews etc. We were surprised by the the fact that nobody seemed to know we were coming when we got there. The dining room is more like the front room in an old style B&B with a reasonable sea view possible from two tables. We waited approximately 40 minutes to be given the chance to order a drink - which rather set the tone. The waiting staff were funereal at best and surly at worst. The food was OK - just. We declined to leave a tip and explained it was because it was one of the worst meals we had had - nobody bothered to ask what the issues were. I am sorry to write this review - as we had been looking forward to our evening there. My partner and I are very well travelled and have been fortunate to eat in many wonderful places in both the UK and abroad - so we have some reasonable experience on which to base a comparison. Every restaurent is entitled to the odd off-day, but this was really poor for an establishment that is marketing itself as a high quality venue. I also know that reviews tend to be written by people at different ends of the spectrum - very bad or very good experiences. Either way - it is how an establishment deals with unhappy customers that often makes things worse.

I very carefully booked dinner at the Hambrough after a recommendation from a friend and reading reviews. We found the dining room unimpressive and rather like sitting in an aged aunt's 'front room'. It took 20 minutes for the menu to arrive and by this time 3 men on a fishing trip at the adjacent table were in full flow and it was almost impossible to hear across the table. We had asparagus to start with which consisted of 4 cold stems. By this time an hour had passed and we had had 4 waiting staff but non-one seemed to be taking any responsibility for our table. We ordered a white wine by the glass which was so tiny it was gone in 2 sips. The main course of fish was very ordinary. By this time my husband was fed-up and ready to go but I persevered with a pudding which was large and fussy. A bad night or an over-rated restaurant I don't know but I won't be going back.

Picked this hotel a bit at random and weren't disappointed.
When we got there the street was full of cars, so we stopped outside to get change for the nearest car park. The chef/owner came out to move his car so we could park on the street.
The room was gorgeous with a nice lounge area, an enormous bed, and views of both the channel out front, and the hills behind.
The bathroom was too hot, but the radiator was adjustable, so we turned it off (why do more hotels not let you control the heat?).
Dinner in the restaurant was tremendous, with a really large selection of reasonably priced wines (plus a few not so reasonably priced ones). Seemed a bit forgotten about when we'd had dessert, but we weren't too bothered about that and just headed up to the room.
Breakfast (which had to be pre-ordered) arrived at our room (at no extra charge) on time and was large and perfectly cooked.
We hadn't been told a check out time, which left us feeling unrushed.
