“Excellent service”

When we arrived at this charming small hotel, (stunning views!) I discovered I forgot my toothbrush and coffee-mate (I'm dairy intolerant). I explained this to reception, and they immediately sent someone out to get me these things. From then on, the chef (without my asking) accommodated my dairy intolerance for all my meals. Although I don't think there was room service per se, you have the option of breakfast in your room, which was excellent. No parking lot, but staff are willing to move their own cars around to accommodate you.

Staying at The Hamborough wqas a very enjoyable experience, with the highlight being the restaurant, we would expect no less from a Michelin Star establishment and could not ask for anymore. Both dinner and breakfast were wonderful and have to be tried. The hotel we found very comfortable and more a boutique style of hotel, very trendy and modern.

My wife and I have been top the Hamborough before for lunch and this year back on the Isle of Wight decided to head back. Food was great, perfect flavours in each dish. Service was good, although the waiter became preoccupied with another couple as they were asking about Hungarian wines; he proceeded to not leave them alone for the next ten minutes whilst talking about the wines. The fact my wife was celiac then dropped off the radar. To start with she got gluten free fresh bread but as the meal rolled on he brought out standard food for the both of us; although the very attentive lady soon corrected this.

I cannot fault the food, very fresh, simple but elegant flavours. Three course lunch at £26 pp is not cheap but you would easily pay double tat in London for the same quality.

A couple of minus points, the ginger beer I had was just a standard ginger ale mixer, there are local breweries that produce ginger beer! Parking is a mare, we went around twice, parked in the local car park, had to get change from a shop, had to move the car after two hours. Then three spaces came up on the road.

Plus points, amazing food, good service, great sea views, relatively good value for the quality of the food.

We have just returned from a long bank holiday weekend at the Hambrough The break at the hotel came bundled as a ‘package’ and included three nights accommodation and breakfast at the hotel, two evening dinners, and a lunch at the hotel’s ‘cafe’, which is located a mile away in lovely Bonchurch.
We loved the whole experience. The food was just excellent (including the cooked breakfast); in particular I loved the smoked salmon starter, which comes to the table under a glass cloche, filled with a smoke. When the cloche is removed you realise the smoke is ‘oak’ smoke, which infuses the salmon– yum, yum! We ate from the a la carte on both nights, and I could have easily eaten there a third night and not had to repeat any dishes, as the menu has plenty of variety (as it was I was so over indulged, on the third night we stayed in our room and the kitchen did us some lovely sandwiches and a bottle of wine).
The staff at the Hambrough were very friendly and very helpful and that made our stay even more enjoyable. We also met Robert Thompson, the chef/patron, who is a really lovely and unassuming fellow and again this added to our warm feelings for the Hambrough.
Our bedroom was lovely, we stayed in room 7 at the top of the house (there are only 7 bedrooms, so you need to book well in advance). The room is contemporary in style and very comfortable, with a great view of the sea. There are other rooms on the front with balconies – we will book one of these next time. Perched on the hilltop, the views are spectacular.
Part of our package included lunch in the cafe at Bonchurch. Not a cafe but a bistro, the food there was not only excellent but amazing value - £5 for a starter!
Negatives? - The Hambrough is really a large upmarket B&B with a Michelin restaurant – there isn’t really a bar, but a garden room at the back of the hotel. The wine list is slightly eye-watering, though there are some reasonably priced wines on the list (£35 ish). There is no parking, you have to try and find a space in the street outside, but that wasn’t too difficult. So all in all, no real negatives if you manage your expectations before you get there.
Ventnor itself is a quaint little town and totally different to the ‘Benidormness’ of Sandown and Shanklin. The little beach is charming and not packed. On the front there are a couple of places to sit, eat and have some drinks as you watch the sea and take in the sun. It feels slightly undiscovered, so maybe the Hambrough may start a trend that will see the town go more upmarket.
We will return and recommend the Hambrough to our friends.

We were on a self-catering family holiday on the Isle of Wight but fancied a treat so we booked the Hamborough on the basis of its reputation. We booked ages in advance but on the day my husband called and asked if we could have a table in the window (there were 4 of us)and they said yes! When we arrived rather than being taken to our table we were led throught the hotel down various corridors and up some stairs to a very character-less room where we were shown the menus and offered a drink. I am not sure what the point of this was (do Michelin insist on a bar area?) but as we later discovered we had such a nice table I would rather have been shown straight to it. This is probably my only criticism of the place though. We enjoyed somenice cocktails and decided on the tasting menu. Book an early dinner if you decide you'd like to try this, it takes around 3 hours. We then treked back down to the restaurant.
The food from the cheesy profiteroles offered as canapes through to the last yummy chocolate pudding was divine. They obviously use the very best ingredients here, some courses are very simple such as the asparagus starter, but all were cooked to perfection. Quite the best pigeon I have ever tasted. The sommelier was very helpful and helped my husband choose between 2 wines when he couldn't decide in fact we had a number of different staff serving us, all of whom seemed very courteous and knowledgeable although personally I prefer to have the one waitress/waiter all evening.
All in all a memorable evening in very elegant surroundings. You wouldn't go every week, unless you have a sizable trust fund, but a lovely treat if you are visiting the island.

My husband and I went for a mid week break to the Isle of Wight. We picked the Hambrough based on reviews and a friend's recommendation. Hotel was all we were expected. We had booked the smallest room but it had everything we wanted and more, lovely decorations, comfortable bed and nice extras such as a bowl of fruit and free WIFI.

We dined in the restaurant on our first night and had a fantastic meal. Restuarant is quite intimate so was slightly concerned about the fighting couple in the corner but once the food arrived they were soon forgotten. We had the 3 course meal and then asked the sommelier to pick wines for us to go with our courses. He picked some lovely wines - I would definitely recommend this route if you are not a wine expert. For pudding lovers have the souffle! My husband had the cheese (cheese menu has huge!).

Ordering breakfast the night before is slightly strange but no real problem and breakfast was again first rate. Nice touch that you can have your breakfast in your room but as our room had only one seat we ate in the restaurant. One thing to note - we said we would be at breakfast at 8.30 but our cooked breakfast didn't arrive either morning till about 8.50. This gives your a fair amount of time to try out the buffet (fruit, cereal. bread) but if you were in a rush to leave you probably would need to make sure they knew.

All the staff were friendly and efficient.

All in all a great break - would be happy to go again.

Went there over the week end of the 7th August. We had booked online on their website, received confirmation back via email, and 5 days prior to arrival another mail was received again with furthermore details..nice attention.
We were on our Bike so we didn't have issues in parking just in front of the hotel.Hotel and restaurant have Prime location with unbeatable view.
Hotel was fully renovated or done last fall and still is immaculate. Receptionist was extremely kind, gave us all needed explanations we needed on both the hotel and the town. She even gave us the tel number of a nearby competitor restaurant. We wanted a seafood platter....The Ale and lobster on the seafront is the place to go if you want to treat yourself to such delicacy.
Bedrooms are fine, we were in room 7. Spacious comfortable with all you expected for such category of price, £210 BB per night. The only downside is the minor lack of attention from the housekeeping side. Silly water marks here and there...that shows as everything else is so nice.
Please put a curtain on the Bathroom door glossy window so we don't have the light from there waking us up at 5am....even the bathroom blind closed...
Bedroom door...invest in a proper door that is sound proof...not with 1/2 inch gap at the bottom..
Breakfast in room was great with with quality you expect from Robert Thomson's establishment. Fine with attention to details.
On the way down to check out (9am) you can find all the linen on the floor for the bedrooms to be cleaned.....bedsheet direct on the floor!!! You could avoid this couldn't you..
So overall 4 Stars soon to be 5!! Sorry the AA I was a bit tougher than you!! but may be you didn't see that.
Will recommend and go again....and may be eat at the restaurant this time.
