It is approx 7 years since I lasted visited St Maur, and what has changed? - not a lot! Still friendly, clean, comfortable - good, well cooked food and plenty of it served by cheerful obliging staff. If you want in-house entertainment this is not the place for you, but if you value excellent service, clean comfortable rooms, obliging, happy staff at reasonable prices is St Naur you have a winner.

Room Tip: Enjoyed a quiet room with a walk in wet room on the first floor - complete with small balcony

When our group of eight friends decided on a few days away on the Isle of Wight I suggested we try the St. Maur where my husband and I had stayed about three years ago. I was a little worried that things might have deteriorated in the intervening years but all my worries were unfounded. Once again everything was great. Our rooms were clean, comfortable and (very important as it was not the best of weather) warm with bottled water and plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits provided. Normally I don't sleep very well on the first couple of nights in a strange room but at the St. Maur I slept very well as the bed was so comfortable. The staff, all of whom have been there many years, were friendly and made everyone feel welcome. The food was well cooked and plentiful - in fact portions were so generous that after the first night we told David (the owner and chef) to cut down the amounts as we couldn't eat it all! There was an attractive and large lounge where tea, coffee and mints were provided after dinner and a bar area with an "honesty book". We had transport but many of the guests used the excellent local bus service which stopped nearby. All in all a great few days and we were agreed that any more visits to the Isle of Wight would mean booking in at the St. Maur.

My choice was "pot luck" from a newspaper advert but backed by numerous reviews on Trip Advisor. I was not disappointed. There is no pretension about this hotel. Small, family owned and well-run. Good plain food: clean well-appointed rooms: happy, helpful staff: cheerful and contented fellow-guests and reasonable prices. For a few days break on the Isle of Wight this little gem was ideal! We shall definitely be going back for more.

I found this hotel on the Internet and from the moment I spoke with them I knew I had made the right choice. David and his staff went out of their way to provide for my dietary requirements and both the evening meal and breakfast exceeded expectations in both quality and quantity. Whilst we were there it soon became clear that many of the guests had stayed several times before, always a good sign, and the banter between the staff and these guests made for hilarious evenings in the dining room. The only down side was that David could only accommodate us for two nights so we had to spend our third night elsewhere. Needless to say St Maur has spoilt us for anywhere else on the island.

We have enjoyed another excellent 3 night stay at St Maur. It was unusually cold for the first week of April, but we did not need to worry about being warm enough in the hotel. We would certainly consider staying at St Maur in the winter in the future. The hotel provided excellent food, service and atmosphere throughout our stay and, when we were not out and about, it was very relaxing, peaceful and comfortable in our room.

Just returned from our first visit to St. Maur, a 3 night break. We have stayed in a few other hotels in/around Ventnor but this is definitely the best. Our large 'superior' room and en-suite was first class, breakfasts and dinners were wonderful, and the staff were extremely pleasant and obliging.
The weather wasn't very good, but St. Maur's comfortable lounge was always a pleasant place to return to. Like most properties in Ventnor it's built on the side of a hill, so access is via a relatively steep path.

Room Tip: Our room on the top floor was very good, and probably had the best view, but the second set of stair...
