“Not what we were expecting!”
Reviewed 19 October 2011

We stayed at Edelweiss from Sat 15th - Tues 18th October 2011.

Let's get the good bits out of the way. On arrival we were dealt with efficiently and, er that's it! Other reviews tell of the wonderful friendly staff - they must have been on holiday during our visit? We were pointed to an extremely small lift that could not accommodate both of us with our single case and we presumed our room was on floor 2 as the number on the key ring was 207! We subsequently discovered that all rooms at Edelweiss are pre-fixed by a 2 so we guessed lucky? Our room WAS comfortable and we had a lovely sea view. However, the heating was on during the day and that made it very uncomfortable as the weather was very nice for October!

Looking around the room we were absolutely staggered to find that the kettle and hairdryer were wired to the same plug!! The shower room was ok to a point if you can handle the toiletry shelf being too close to the small wash basin which made it impossible to rinse your face without spilling the entire contents of the basin on the floor! A sign on the shower door asks you to ensure that the curtain is inside the tray before you shower. Fine if the curtain was not a good 2 inches short!

Breakfast at Edelweiss is served in a small room that would struggle if the hotel was full. There was a good selection of fruit/cereal but the breakfast was a buffet style. Our waitress, who seemed to be totally disinterested, advised us that the plates were very hot. What a pity that the food was, to be generous, warm! Also, if you like scrambled egg then Edelweiss is the place to go!!

Overall, we were rather disappointed with the lack of personal attention and at no time during our visit were we asked if we had enjoyed our stay!

We will return to the island but, unless there was a shortage of available rooms, we would not stay at Edelweiss again.

When we were booking our Isle of Man holiday, there was a note in the brochure that said that the Edelweiss was closing its bar and opening a restaurant in March 2011. Knowing the unreliable climate of the Isle of Man, a hotel with a restaurant advertising meals for £12.50 per head seemed like a very good idea in case we didn't want to venture out in the rain. So a couple of days before sailing, we phoned to book a table for the first night. Only to be told that the proposed restaurant was now just a morning and afternoon coffee shop.
Our party had two rooms, facing each other, a double for us parents and a twin for the two teenagers. Now all these reviews that praise the sea view are correct. It's spectacular, but not everyone can have the sea view, and our double room was at the back. With a view of a sheer cliff face, and the bins below.
The Edelweiss has one lift which was probably installed when the hotel was built, one of those with a manual door and an inner gate on a mighty spring to make sure it shuts. The lift is just big enough for two people who don't mind being quite intimate, or one person with one suitcase. Allow plenty of time for checkout if you have an early ferry. They request that you don't use the lifts after 10pm for the sake of the people in the adjacent rooms, because they are pretty clanky.
Now let's hit the positives.
Good size rooms, although our double had just slightly too much furniture in it for the space available. The en-suite bathroom was also a bit small. By contrast, the teens' twin room and bathroom were very spacious, and being at the front had that stunning sea view. If you are lucky enough to get a sea view, it's pretty good from the second floor upwards. (The first floor faces the back of the souvenir shirt shop.) All the beds were very comfortable and clean.
Friendly staff, very accommodating. Generous and tasty cooked breakfasts, although the breakfast room is too small if all the guests come down at the same time.
Monstrous TV in the guest lounge, and a selection of books and DVDs for all ages to borrow on an honesty basis.
No private parking, but Switzerland Road is pretty quiet and always has some space a bit further up. If you park on the sea front there are time restrictions.
Edelweiss is located about halfway between the Gaiety Theatre and the electric tram terminus. Buy a travel pass at the tram terminus, it covers electric and horse drawn trams, the steam railway and all the buses. There is a horse tram stop right in front of the sweat shirt shop.
The rooms all had a decent little TV with built in DVD. Free WiFi access is available, just ask for the password.
One night we ate in the Aroma Indian buffet along the sea front. I think the rice was bad. I felt unwell before we had left the buffet, but my 13 year old daughter saved hers up until about midnight and "redecorated" a large area of the bedroom. In the morning the Hotel staff cleaned it all up and changed the bedding without any hint of complaint or any mention of a charge.

In summary, if the Edelweiss had called itself a guest house, I would have rated it as good or excellent. As a hotel, it lacks the facilities I'd expect.

Room Tip: It's all been said before. Ask for a sea view.

I recently stayed here when I participated in the Isle of Man End2End mountain bike challenge. It was a great little hotel, with very friendly and helpful staff. THey didn't even blink when we all arrived with muddy mountain bikes and asked to store them in their kitchen! My only complaint, and it's a very minor one (and the reason for a 'very good' rating rather than an 'excellent' rating) is that overall the temperature in the hotel was for some reason quite hot and therefore it was a little stuffy - with the windows open this wasn't a big deal, but if you accidentally left the window shut when you went out then it was like coming back to a sauna! Otherwise, a really excellent hotel for an absolute bargain, I will absolutely be back!

Room Tip: You can hear the ocean from the rooms with a sea view - i really enjoyed this. The lift can be very...

A charming and helpful receptionist who made the booking in experience short and sweet greeted us.
The pleasant and friendly lady in the dining room for breakfast was really on the ball with tea, coffee and toast of our choice arriving swiftly. When I asked for an addition to the full buffet breakfast the answer was yes of course.
Our room 210 on the 2nd floor accessed by lift or stairs was as expected and very clean with an adjoining en suite with had a large shower and plenty of nice fluffy towels.
Should I be lucky enough to visit the Isle of Man in the future my 1st. choice will be
like many of the other residence that I chatted to will be the EDELWEISS

The Edelweiss Hotel is very clean and tidy its ideal if you looking for a central location in Douglas. Breakfast is excellent . When we booked it they must have had a bar but on arrival we discovered it is now a coffee shop it was not a problem as we were only staying a couple of nights, but if you are looking for a more social holiday and would like to have a drink late evening without venturing out then this is not the hotel for you. We had an amazing sea view and the room was very clean.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view its spectacular

Myself and wife stayed at the Edelweiss from 26th June to 1st July, 2011 and we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Shirley and Liz were lovely. The room (a top floor bedroom with sea view) was compact and clean with en-suite facilities. Coffee and tea with kettle are provided plus a hairdryer. It was cleaned every day and towels changed on request. The lift is a good 'ice-breaker'' amongst residents and we had a good laugh talking about it -- it takes 2 people with a squeeze. There is a lovely front lounge with massive TV set. The hotel has recently opened "The Minstrels" coffee shop. open to residents and non-residents. The breakfast is "mega" --- eat as much as you want from juices; cereals; bacon; egg; sausages; tomatoes; has browns; tomatoes etc and toast. Parking is easliy available on the nearby promenade. We are lookng forward to visiting Edelweiss and the lovely Island again.

Room Tip: To book a sea view room I would recommend bookingy
