How great it was to go back in time.in a carriage pulled by one of the little engines.
We queued in the lovely little café at the station in Douglas to purchase tickets from a guy behind a sweet little hatch. We were shown where to get a timetable for the return journey and then proceeded outside towards the train. The carriages are accessed via single doors with solid brass handles. Once slammed shut there is no way of opening the door from the inside of the carriage. The widow therefore needs to be lowed via a leather strap to access the outside handle. Fantastic! Of course there are guards at all of the stations to assist if needed.
It is a rickety ride as the train proceeds across the Island, stopping at very well kept and pretty stations.
We went the whole way to Port Erin but would have liked to stop off along the way as others were doing but time was against us. At Port Erin the free small museum is very interesting providing information on not just the railway but on other historic points of the Island. I think in general the I.O.M. is overpriced but the £12.40 paid for this attraction is worth every penny.
