“Take your ear plugs”

This is a large hotel with an impressive reception area, it is only when you try to get to your room that you see the difference. There is only one small lift to take you to all 4 floors and it can get stuck on any one of them. If you don't book a "Sea Facing" room you will be given one that is dark and small and (as our one did) look over the kitchen area with the extractor and smell of the cooking. I don't think any of the rooms have a good view, only the front ones. They have over 400 rooms and the walls are thin so every time a visitor enters their room, the doors bang very loudly and the walls shake. They don't seem to like coach tour people and we felt like "second class citizens". We were moved about to different eating area's for our evening meals and had them on our own (our group), we felt as if they just wanted to hide us away from the other guests and hovered over us as soon as the final course was served. The breakfast room is located in the basement and the staff there were very cheerful and helpful. The facilities in the hotel are a swimming pool that is only 1.25 metres deep,; a Sauna and a Jacussi.
The disabled entrance is through the basement so you have to wait ages for the lift to take you to your floor.
On the plus side, the Empress is in a very good position and the food can be very good.

We have stayed in many hotels in Douglas over the years, some good some bad and some worse than that! This was one of the better ones and I would reccomend it for s stay in Douglas. The breakfast was good and the dining room large and clean; we didn't eat there in the evenings but saw some of the food served in the bar area and it looked good. The twin and double rooms were good and spacious but the singles were small but clean.

I stayed for one night on a late deal and having lived and stayed in the Isle of Man for many years, my expectations of its hotels were - 'fingers crossed it isn't going to be too bad!'

You see, the old reputation of Isle of Man hotels are that they are overly expensive, dated and lacking in modern facilities. Purely down to a blinkered government with muted enthusiasm (and no idea!) of how to nurture and run its core hotel industry.

The governent backed IOM tourist board had also been led with the belief that increased tourism was based on ploughing money into advertising how great the Isle of Man is without offering any notion of how tourist will be welcomed and looked after.

The result? fudged tourist figures during TT (bikers will always want to come to the Island regardless of treatment because of the TT!) and ignored figures on the general exodus of family holiday tourists each year who leave with the bitter resentment a feeling fleeced after staying in a 1960's chintz shoe box.

Ultimately, and abandoned by a government feeding off the banking industry, the islands hoteliers have been left to sort them selves out....

So back to the empress....well no chintz and no shoe box. A warm welcome and a room with internet access. My room had no view, but then I didn't ask or pay for one.

The hotel was clean and well decorated with gym and swimming pool, though sadly I didn't visit these facilities so can't comment. My room was a single room and although small was well coordinated and compensated for with a large clean bathroom. Douglas the islands capital is 5 minutes walk down the 'prom' and a pleasent stroll after a hearty breakfast. I left the next day feeling relaxed and refreshed.

As a now - 'general holiday tourist' I can safely say I can contemplate the return of another trip to the Isle of Man...I would definately recommend the Empress.

Of hotels on the Island in general? Clearly this is now being addressed by the hoteliers and whilst improving, pricing during the high season still remain high and a cloud on the horizon. With no real government support, hotels make the most from obtaining income during the tourist season and to take them through the winter months. The prices during these months are still too high and this will put people off and produce bad feedback.

My advice is book out of season, either side of summer. That way you are guaranteed vaue for money and still find the 'Island' open during the colder months.

Standard double room very clean and warm, good bathroom, breakfast included; given high, quiet room as requested.
Declined to eat in restaurant as thought prices high but we did find that these were comparable with prices of meals offered in other hotels used by relatives who paid much more for room only.
Town centre short walk away and good promenade position for a longer walk.
Would use this hotel again and again specify quiet room on high floor .

Very clean and good location. Bed Room very small. Leisure centre very poor - a glorified hot tub, needs a major facelift. Breakfast room very functional - decor more like an Italian cafe in the 1960s. Not conducive to a relaxing luxury breakfast. Restaurant food very good. Decor in reception, bar and restaruant very good. Regardless of the quality of the hotel - good or bad - the biggest negative was the unfriendliness of the staff. We stayed for four nights/five days and it was us who were meeting and greeting the staff, when in the hospitality business it usually is the other way round.

Stayed in The Empress in a twin room for 2 nights and thought it was great. Location is perfect for heading into town, right on the seafront for a walk. I was sharing a room with a friend and we had a large double bed and a single in the room. Flat screen tv on the wall, tea & coffee making facilities, large bathroom with fantastic shower. The only downsides to the room are that the hairdryer is one of those plastic wind machine things and there is no safe. I would suggest to the Hotel Management that they do something about the room doors banging closed as it woke us up early in the mornings!! They could do with putting slow closers on the doors. Apart from these minor things, the room was perfect for us. We ate in the Connaught Restaurant on our last night and the food was really good. The Hotel was very quiet at night and the bar was practicallty empty although on the Sunday afternoon, the Restaurant was very busy for Sunday lunch. We got the twin room for £132 B&B for the 2 nights which was a bargin and great value for money. I would definitely stay at this hotel next time I visit the IOM which will be sooner rather than later.

Over for the End to End. Hotel in a great location, helpfull staff, great breakfast to set you up for a days cycling. We were in an internal room that was clean and adequate and well serviced. Facilities are great but our swimming pool is a little bigger! Our children were in other accommodation and wished they were in this hotel! Hopefully we will return next year if we can.
