“Old fashioned hospitality”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2014

Despite some poor reviews I found this hotel to be of a good standard.
The New Attrium Rooms are excellent, but some in the older front part are a little dated.
The lift at the front of hotel wasn't working for our 3 day stay so an elderly parent had a long walk to the older front part bedroom. Food in the restaurant was good quality and plenty of choice for an excellent English breakfast.

Room Tip: Have an Attrium rom in new part of hotel.

Staying for 15 nights (over Manx GP) we booked a luxury, seaview double room as both my wife and I like watching the sea ! Unfortunately the windows were so filthy that we couldn't see anything. When I had a moan I was tol;d that the cleaners would be around in a few days. They did come but only cleaned the outside (and that roughly) - none of the insides were done. Great shame - spoilt a good stay.
Otherwise room was great - very large which was good for a long stay. Had a massive bathroom with plenty of hot water and towels ! Must admit that on some days the maid service was not up to scratch (too many rooms to clean?) but could live with that.
Wi-Fi was so slow that I had to buy a Mifi package to get anywhere near workable speed.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a review. We are sorry to hear your feedback regarding the windows ....as you can imagine the outside windows do take the brunt of the sea air and we note these were cleaned during your stay however there is no excuse for dirty "inside" windows and we will review our procedures in this respect. Overall however we are pleased to hear that you were pleased with your room and bathroom. Thank you again for your comments.

After 7 years being a loyal customer we have now called time on the Sefton. Reception on arrival was underwhelming and unfriendly, sky tv has been taken away, no turn down, haven't learnt the art of cooking an egg without it tasting of vinegar, decor needs updating to name but a few of the issues and the saddest of all is despite raising concerns to reception the general manager couldn't be bothered to talk to us and understand our concerns. The hotel needs to remind itself that they are in the hospitality trade and clearly don't care anymore.

Thank you for your review. I am obviously extremely disappointed to read your comments and in particular your remarks relating to myself. I believe that Rom, my Senior Operations Manager, did in fact discuss some issues with you as I personally was not in the Hotel at the time. I can assure you that our guest satisfaction is always of paramount importance to the whole team here at the Sefton Hotel.
Hospitality is our business and something which I and my team do take very seriously.
Thanks once again and sorry. Robert Duncan

We stayed one night in this hotel. We were upgraded to an Atrium room which was nice, but for little glitches that needn't have been there. Maintenance should have sorted this out. It's these little problems that can downgrade a room, which should be classified as luxury, but unfortunately due to the small issues in the room, wasn't! That's a great shame.
The atrium in the building is fabulous, and a great surprise. We weren't expecting it at all!
Reception was OK, but the staff in the restaurant were very nice indeed.
Breakfast was very nice, and was what we expected in a 4* hotel.
The location is excellent, and all in all, despite the little annoying issues with our room, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel if you are travelling to Douglas.

Room Tip: The atrium rooms have a balcony.

Thank you for submitting a review following your stay with us.

We are sorry to hear that you experienced a few little "glitches" in your room and we hope that you mentioned these to our staff during your stay - such feedback is vital to us and helps us to iron out any possible issues for our guests. The Atirum was opened in 1999 and we are pleased you enjoyed this.

Thank you for chosing to stay with us and for recommending us to other prospective guests.

My wife and I stayed for 4 nights this August for the classic TT, when we arrived, late afternoon, the reception staff were friendly (as usual), polite and offered to help us with our luggage off our motorcycle. When we went to our room we thought there had been a mistake as the room given was the Regency suite when we had only booked a 'regular double', but when I enquired about the 'mistake', I was pleasantly surprised to be told we had been given a 'free' upgrade to a suite. The food was excellent, the staff friendly and helpful and yes I know the hotel could do with a bit of a spruce up and the cost might be a bit higher than the other 'so called 'hotels' (renamed bed and breakfasts, but it helps when they put their prices up) but other than that no problems. This is the 6th time we have been to this hotel for the various motorcycle festivals (I went to a B&B last year but never again) and we accept it is not a 'luxury hotel' but what it does provide it does so very well and we would not hesitate to book again.

Thank you for submitting a review and for your positive feedback. We added 9 Suites to the Sefton in 2009, one of which being the Regency Suite. As always we are pleased to hear that you found our staff friendly and helpful and the food "excellent".

Thank you for your repeat custom over the years and we look forward to welcoming you back again next year.

Have stayed in Douglas for many years but never in the Sefton. After reading mixed reviews I think most were unnecessarily harsh. Yes this hotel is a little tricky to navigate and looking dated in places but it is a Victorian (Edwardian?) building which has been adapted to provide modern facilities such as lifts. We would have liked a sea-facing room but the hotel was full, so were pleased to have an atrium-facing room which had a balcony. I can imagine in hot weather ventilation might be a problem but as it was a cooler week this was OK. I was also worried about noise from other indoor-facing rooms but again this was not a problem.
Only niggle in the room would be the bathroom, very small corner shower with temperamental plumbing but again note Victorian hotel. Otherwise very clean and tidy.
Breakfast fantastic much better than the Hilton we used on the way over. Bar service great and waiters very friendly especially Vincent. Ate in the bar three times on the holiday meals all very good and reasonably priced. Overall reasonable value (all hotels hike prices for racing in IoM) and superbly located.

Thank you for taking the time to submit a review. As you say the hotel can be a little tricky to navigate. The Sefton first opened its doors in 1892 with various sections and wings being added over the years but we believe this only adds to its overall character.

We are pleased you found the hotel clean and tidy and thank you for your comments regarding our staff and food.

We look forward to welcoming you back again in the future.

Hotel is a lovely large Victorian building and well kept. Staff are friendly and hotel is clean. We had a room facing the boilers and couldn't sleep because of the noise. Wifi is free but limited. They seem to block you from many sites and apps.
