“Almost but not quite”
Reviewed 19 November 2012

Stayed at this hotel while visiting the Isle of Man on business. I am not sure what they are trying to create in terms of style, however, this is a functional establishment that doesn't cost too much.

A couple of gripes about the place. I had a hot/cold shower the first morning and reported this to reception asking if the problem could be resolved. I was assured by the staff this would be sorted out but it was not until two days later it finally was and then only after I got a little more robust in my complaint.

There was a strange smell when I first went to my room, but opening both windows for the day seemed to solve this.

Apart from the above, this is a hotel that is functional and delivers. The breakfast is down in the cellar bar area and there is a very eclectic mix of furniture there!

I didn't use any of the other facilities so could not comment on them. The position of the hotel is very good being at the central end of the promenade so easy for walking to the financial district as well as the shopping area.

All in all, not bad, but just misses the trick which is a shame as I think it could be right up there if they were a little more on the ball.

Room Tip: If you want a sea view then ask, I looked out over an alley.

Lovely room view of the sea, room lovely really big bed and the breakfast was good but hubby would have liked a larger portion of kippers. He should have gone the full English like me which was very good and plenty ! Great location.

I only stayed here for one night, and that was regrettable. I was fortunate enough to get a preferential rate thanks to a customer I was visiting on the island, and I couldn't have had a better (or bigger!!) room. Sea view, massive room, and a sofa in a bay window where you can sit and watch the world go by along Douglas prom, lovely!

We ate in the restaurant there, JAR, the food was absolutely fantastic (but quite pricey so be aware). The bar downstairs was really nice too though if you want to keep costs down, with your more standard type of fare, I can highly recommend the duck spring rolls. Beer prices are elevated, but again you would come to expect that of a hotel on the front in the capital of the island.

I will most definitely be staying here again, and hope to try the breakfast next time, didn't get the chance this time as I left for the airport at 5:45am.

A excellent central place to stay. Friendly forever smiling reception staff, an upgrade to a larger sea view room on arrival due to a slight mix up with our original booking. The room and bathroom was extemely clean and well appointed. The bed was comfy with very supportive pillows. The breakfasts were of an excellent standard and cooked to order. And yes... Kippers were on the menu. We would definitely recommend to others and will stay here again.

One minute walk to the shops, 5 minutes walk to the Visitor Centre/ Sea Terminal.

My first trip to the Isle of Man so everything was guesswork, including the hotel. The Admiral House appeared to be in the right location, the right price and we had a room with a sea view, which was a dealbreaker for the Memsahb. First impressions were favourable; yes, it was bang on the prom' and not too far from the ferry terminal. Very pleasant reception staff, gave me loads of info', some of which needed to be repeated as there was so much. Very helpful parking tips as well (didn't pay a penny in car parking charges the whole week).

So, the room. Well, it was HUGE!!! Great big deep bay window with a setee and armchairs in it (we actually rearranged the furniture to take advantage of the view). Probably one of the largest hotel rooms I have stayed in. Yes, the tv was a tad old-fashioned, and the remote didn't work that well, but for our purposes those minor problems didn't really register. The bed was really comfortable and, like the room, it was huge. A real king-size which was brilliant as I am a fan of big beds. The bathroom (around 100sq ft) was really pleasing, apart from the missing seal at the bottom of the shower screen which meant there was a flood every time you took a shower. Good quality toiletries and plenty of space to put your own stuff. The bathroom door didn't quite close so it needed to be locked, as opposed to just closed for privacy.

There were a few stains on the carpet. The full-length mirror was inside the wrong door of the wardrobe (the other door couldn't be fully opened due to the bedside cabinet obstructing it - hence the hole in the wardrobe door). There was no small refrigerator to keep drinks cool. However, when placed against the cost of the room, and the location (right on the prom and really close to the shops) these were really inconsequential.

Breakfast was served in the cellar bar/restaurant. Help yourself to juice/tea/coffee/cereals/etc. Cooked items were prepared to order. My full English was one of the best ever. 'Nuff said.

JAR was the acronym for 'Just Another Resaurant'. I think the owner has shot himself in the foot with that monicker as it really isn't just another restaurant as it was fine dining at the top of the range in a beautiful room with excellent service. I had a dozen of the sweetest, pearl-sized Queenies for my starter - they were exquisite! My wife had the twice-baked cheese suoffle - again it was beautifully cooked and presented. My fillet steak with braised ox-tail was absolutely delicious, particularly the ox-tail. My wife's choice of Monkfish was similarly well received. Sadly, no room for dessert so no comment there, however, next time (and I hope there will be a next time) I will miss lunch so I can manage one.

All the staff were really helpful, pleasant and unerringly polite but very happy to chat with you, so much so that it would be invidious to pick any one of them out for special praise. All in all, we had a great time and hope to return in the not too distant future.

Thank you Admiral House.

Room Tip: Treat yourself to an executive, sea view room. It's well worth the extra.

Stayed for 5 nights. Was impressed with the size of the room (201) and the massive bed and the view over the bay was stunning. Room was clean although a lot of stains on the carpets and no hand soap in on suite, bed comfy but pillows brick hard. Breakfast is served in the downstairs bar/grill. Limited options but full breakfast worked a treat, sometimes the tea/coffee was luke warm and lack of glasses for orange juice. The main restaurant was a bit pretentious and very expensive but then again, all fine dining on the island costs a fair bit, I personally would have struggled to eat anything on the menu but at least you can check it out online !. The grill is a totally different story, Great food, Brilliant selection and reasonable price. The staff are friendly and efficient, Most are of Eastern Euro origin and can hold a decent conversation but they do chat to themselves in their own lingo which is a bit unnerving.. Entertainment at weekend is good but the same each night, so you no the next song before the singer hahahaha, Will def return

Room Tip: Ask for sea view
