“The perfect place to stay”
Reviewed 25 September 2009

My wife and I stayed at the Inglewood for 4 nights in July (celebrating our Ruby wedding anniversary) and really can only endorse the comments of previous contributors. Pip and Andy are perfect hosts, nothing is too much trouble for them and they have obviously worked very hard over the last couple of years to transform the property to its present very high standards. We stayed in the sea-facing room on 2nd floor, a beautifully well appointed and furnished spacious room that was completely refurbished (along with many other rooms) earlier in 2009. Add to this the superb breakfasts (wish they also did dinners) and the friendly evening ambience of Andy’s “Scotch bar” then it is the perfect place to stay in Douglas. We were given some excellent suggestions for things to do and places to visit, together with recommendations for dinner (we particularly liked the Welbeck Hotel and China Town restaurants). The location was fine for us, a bit of a hike into centre of town (still a very pleasant walk along the broad promenade) but plenty of buses and horse-drawn trams stop close to the hotel. The only small downsides are the lack of a lift and the rather steep entrance steps that may be difficult for some folk. Without doubt this hotel is thoroughly recommended – we’ll be back soon.

Stayed for a week at the Inglewood, a choice based largely on its Tripadvisor rating. Our room (#15) was on the 4th floor – lots of stairs (and no lift), so not for anyone with mobility problems; the room was really spacious (two of the original rooms knocked into one), recently completely refurbished; king-sized bed with memory foam mattress, two comfortable armchairs, leather sofa (that also converts into a sofa bed, if required), lots of wardrobe and cupboard space, coffee table, large plasma telly and DVD player, tea & coffee making facilities, superb en-suite facilities with large walk-in shower; panoramic sea views of the whole of Douglas sea front. The room was immaculate when we arrived, and the housekeeping staff kept it so during our stay. Inglewood is right on Queens Promenade, so literally just across the road to the beach. It’s towards the northern (quieter) end of the sea front; ferry terminal about 1.3 miles away (but regular bus service along the prom with a bus stop about 40 yards away); horse tram stop almost opposite – ideal during peak times, but service only runs from mid-May until beginning of September; Manx Electric Railway terminus only about 10 minutes stroll north along the prom (giving a great scenic ride north from Douglas to Ramsey via Laxey -with the famous water wheel, and a direct connection to the Snaefell Mountain Railway – but only between April and end September). Inglewood is B&B only (with a good and varied breakfast menu served from 8.30-9.30, but earlier breakfast provided by prior arrangement). For other meals, there are lots of eateries in Douglas; we tended to use the northern prom end eateries, only a few minutes stroll from Inglewood – the Terminus Tavern adjacent to the MER terminus does good pub food at very reasonable prices; nearby to the Terminus Tavern, China Town is a smartish Chinese restaurant; Chillies is an Indian restaurant (offering a particularly good value Sunday evening Special); Pizza King offers good value and quality (with free coffee and biscuits while you wait for your order); L’Experience serves classic French food (very popular with the Islanders, and pre-booking is essential to get a table). The Inglewood proprietors, Andy and Pip, were fantastic hosts, a fount of useful information, and nothing too much trouble. Inglewood has a large lounge with sea views, and a comfortable, well-stocked residents’ bar; Andy has a particular interest in unusual whiskies, and the bar stocks about 40 different varieties. We think that Inglewood fully deserves its premium Tripadvisor rating and, apart from potential problems with stairs for the less mobile, could find nothing to fault.

We flew in from Gloucester with Manx2 airline and rather than hire a car we bought Island Explorer tickets at Ronaldsway Airport (£42 for 7 days travel on buses, steam and electric railways, horse trams, Snaefell mountain railway) – cautionary note that the airport information desk will not accept credit or debit cards for Explorer ticket purchase). We found the Explorer tickets excellent value, and used them to travel over the whole Island between Ramsey in the north and Calf Sound at the southern tip; our journeys would probably have cost at least £80 without the Explorer tickets . Buses runs from the airport to Douglas Lord Street bus station (near ferry terminal) – journey time only 24 minutes, cost £2.10 single fare; taxies from airport to Douglas charge about £16-18.

We went to the Isle of Man to run the half marathon the other week. Andy and Pip really went out of their way to make us feel welcome and even let us come back and use the showers after we'd been running. Inglewood is located right on the promenade near the terminus of the horse-drawn trams... The rooms are comfortable and the breakfast is good...

Be careful if you can't managed steps as there is no lift and all of the houses on the front have several floors...
