Owner description: Situated on St Patrick’s Isle, Peel Castle was originally a place of worship before becoming the fort of Magnus Barefoot – an 11th century Viking King of Mann. The castle’s curtain wall encircles the ruins of many buildings which are a testimony to the site’s religious and secular importance in the Isle of Man's history.Visit St Patrick’s Church and the Round Tower which date back to the 10th and 11th centuries and step underground into the atmospheric crypt of the 13th century Cathedral of St German. You’ll have the opportunity to stroll the castle’s extensive grounds and climb to the top of the Gatehouse Tower where you can enjoy panoramic views of Peel and beyond as well as entering the 16th century Great Garrison Hall. And look out for the Moddey Dhoo – a ghostly apparition of a black dog which is said to haunt the castle!Peel Castle remained a royal residence and centre of government for more than 200 years until power moved south to the Medieval fortress of Castle Rushen.

“Interesting and well presented”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

The castle and its site has a long history which is well presented, particularly with the portable audio guides issued by the very helpful and welcoming Trust staff. The site also provides excellent views of the surrounding coast and inland over Peel.
Visit this castle in conjunction with the House of Manannan museum and the Nautical Museum in Peel and you've an excellent day !
There's a reciprocal arrangement with the National Trust.

We loved visiting the Castle. As we are National Trust members in the UK we were able to gain free admission to this.

“Great castle and audio tour”
Reviewed 25 June 2014

Excellent castle with friendly and helpful volunteer staff. The audio tour was great and really brought it all to life. Great views over the battlements and a lovely walk on the outside of the castle. Well worth a visit.

“Visit Peel Castle and Former Cathedral”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

This attraction is well organised with a number key commentary which is easily listenable too and allows you to do the tour in any way you choose. We had a great 90mins there. Not recommended on other than a dry day as its almost all open air. Brilliant views and historical background
