Owner description: Situated on St Patrick’s Isle, Peel Castle was originally a place of worship before becoming the fort of Magnus Barefoot – an 11th century Viking King of Mann. The castle’s curtain wall encircles the ruins of many buildings which are a testimony to the site’s religious and secular importance in the Isle of Man's history.Visit St Patrick’s Church and the Round Tower which date back to the 10th and 11th centuries and step underground into the atmospheric crypt of the 13th century Cathedral of St German. You’ll have the opportunity to stroll the castle’s extensive grounds and climb to the top of the Gatehouse Tower where you can enjoy panoramic views of Peel and beyond as well as entering the 16th century Great Garrison Hall. And look out for the Moddey Dhoo – a ghostly apparition of a black dog which is said to haunt the castle!Peel Castle remained a royal residence and centre of government for more than 200 years until power moved south to the Medieval fortress of Castle Rushen.

It was a drizzly day when we visited Peel and the castle. Found the hand information sets very informative and easy to use at your own pace. Loved wandering around the castle. Great views!

This is a great visit and well worth taking time to look around. We were given audio packs on arrival and marker posts around the site allowed us to find out more of the history...very well done. In addition to the recorded and visual history, the views from the castle site are fabulous looking out over the sea, harbour and the town. Holders of National Trust cards get in for free. Very highly recommended

I came to visit with a choir and we sang a service in the cathedral ruins on Sunday morning. It was misty and ethereal. We sang a mass by Palestrina to seagull accompaniment. A really wonderful; experience.

I also did a standard visit with audio tour which was great - very flexible, allowing the visitor to follow his/her own preferred route around the site, with a wealth of information to bring its rich history alive.

I have visited the ruins of Peel Castle on many occasions. There is not much here but it is a beautiful place to visit on a sunny day. Our children had a great time exploring the grounds and there are some beautiful views. A great spot for a picnic. Be warned that there are some steep steps and sheer drops so hold on to young children. The gentleman at the entrance was friendly and helpful. Toilet was very clean. An audio guide is available if you want to know the history. Make sure you walk round the external perimeter of the castle, which you can do without paying to enter the castle.
