We happened to stop by on a break from watching the racing during TT week. We were looking for cakes and tea in a lovely place and, to our pleasant surprise we found a very clean, cozy, classy, full-menu restaurant - in addition to lovely cakes and teas.
Run by the very sweet and talented Eva from Bulfgaria the menu feature delicious, healthy daily specials and a variety of traditional Manx/British fare ranging from fish & chips to meat pies, salads and sandwiches. We enjoyed the food, location, atmosphere, as well as Eva's and her mate's hospitality so much we returned five times that week! It is reasonably priced and good for lunch, dinner, afternoon tea, or a snack (and open fairly late).
Specifically, we had excellent coffee and tea, lemon cake which was a delicious generous portion, fluffy and not oversweet; Cross buns which were moist and delicious, Fish & Chips which were simply the best in town - with a flavorful batter, high quality fish, with great chips - properly sized and not greasy at all....Ace!!! We also stopped for takeaway sandwiches twice during the racing and they were, although simply English cheese sandwiches, superb!
Eva does cakes and other pastries for special oocassions and, from waht we could see from her photos (and not only photos of her cakes grace the walls. Eva is a talented photographer and many beautiful Manx and other landscapes from interesting and creative prespectives adorn the walls), they were creative, often funny, and beautiful! Although we didn't order any, I am sure they are as delicious as everything else.
So, do yourself and your loved ones a favor and please go see Eva at The Mad Hatter and go early in your trip and often. Both your palate and pocketbook with be very happy!
