“Well run local hotel”
Reviewed 2 February 2014 via mobile

We recently stayed for three nights. We found the royal to be very well managed by a friendly and efficient team! keen for you to have a good stay. Spacious rooms, fluffy towels and a top notch breakfast. On site downstairs is the bar Noir, which is OK, but a rather dark young folks venue - handy for a drink through the day. The Italian (reviewed separately), is excellent.

Affordable prices too. A sea view was not available for us, but well worth the extra.

The rooms have seen better days, and we had a few minor issues, that said the hotel staff rectified them immediately, with a happy smile.

Great value and great location, right opposite the sea.

One word of caution, loads of stairs, so not a good choice for disable or those with mobility challenges.

My husband and I stayed at The Royal for one night having read great reviews on this site. We were in the area visiting a relative in North Tyneside Hospital, which is only about a five minute drive away, so this was another reason for choosing this hotel. Having travelled 150 miles, we arrived a little early for check in, but the receptionist checked to see if our room was ready. It wasn't, but she upgraded us to a sea view room (Room 10) and we were able to settle in before visiting the hospital. The whole place had a lovely clean and fresh scent as we were taken to our room and what a lovely room it was. The décor was fresh, modern and tastefully decorated and there was an ample supply of tea, coffee, chocolate, biscuits and a bottle of water. Bed linen was spotless and the fluffy white towels complemented the huge en suite white shower room, where there was also a supply of toiletries .
The buffet style breakfast was delicious, everything anyone could wish for, with friendly and efficient staff in attendance. An excellent hotel in a lovely part of the country - if you haven't been to this area (as I hadn't), then you should and if you are looking for a "home from home" place to stay, then choose The Royal Hotel.

Room Tip: We had Room 10, a sea view room, which was lovely. We stayed on a Sunday night and the only noise we...

Stayed for one night, the hotel is clean and tidy, I had a sea view room, I asked for a quiet room, I was over the bar and there was a live band on in the bar !
I oukd not suggest that you do not stay there, it was just not my kind of hotel it is very.....80s contractor hotel with en suite and a flat screen television.
As a contractor in the 70s and 80s I stayed in Whitley Bay on and off for over 10 years and the hotel would have been fine then.
All the staff were great, the new bar is very modern, perhaps a bit of the money used in the bar could have been spent on the hotel, a good start would be working door closers, power showers, and a choice of pillows.
Breakfast was fine served by friendly ladies.
As I said it is not my type of place but really nothing wrong with it.

Room Tip: I think 1st floor rooms with sea view are over the bar, check before booking if you dont like it a b...

My second, my wife's first visit. I stayed overnight with my son, nephew and family friend overnight having completed the coast to coast cycle ride back in September, it was good then. Still the same fantastic breakfast, friendliness and hospitality. We were given a free upgrade to a superior room complete with bathrobes. All in all couldn't have done better anywhere else in Whitley Bay.

Room Tip: Our room was over the bar area where the music for some may seem loud, but it didn't cause us an...

We stayed here for a Saturday night in October. We had one of the large rooms overlooking the fantastic view of the promenade and the sea. The room was huge and nicely furnished. The staff were very helpful and friendly and we were able to park right outside the hotel.

What a great hotel . My wife and I and 2 friends stayed for 2 nights in early December .we were on a shopping trip to Newcastle but decided to stay in Whitley bay because the prices of hotels in Newcastle were so expensive. We found the hotel far better than we had expected ,It had a good location right on the sea front ,the staff were really friendly and helpful giving us all the information we needed about catching the metro into Newcastle .The rooms were warm ,fresh and spacious ,the breakfast was far above our expectations with every thing you could think of available from full English to continental we will return and do recommend. The only down side is car parking with limited spaces shared by adjacent restaurants which can be very busy at evening times .
