Great place to visit - not a vast place but steeped in history and character, with some lovely gardens. A special mention to the very nice lady who even bothered to give us a quick guided tour even after the doors had closed - truly going above and beyond the call of duty but helped us enjoy our visit all the more!

“A National Trust visit”
Reviewed 1 December 2013

this is one of the finest mansion houses in the north east which has not been owned by the National Trust for very long but they are carrying our improvements all the time. Well worth a visit

“Average for National Trust”

All NT cafes are acceptable. This one is small and limited in its range of food, but we had a good sandwich and a tasty panini. The service is efficient and friendly. It was full on a sunny but cold October day; could be a bit crowded in summer.

“hidden gem”
Reviewed 2 November 2013

The major problem with this hall was the lack of signs both to and from the property. there were signs on the road to many different properties but not this one therefore a lot of guess work is needed to find it. Once you have found the place it is well worth a visit. It has not been long acquired by the NT and is still being repaired although it will never be fully repaired. the main house is fascinating and well worth a visit, but the delight is in the wet wing with the beautifully restored rooms. The cellars in the main house are uneven on the floors so be careful, and the café is not good. We were pleased to find the church open which was a delightful building
