“There is no zero rating?”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

Had to give at least one for rating as there isn't a "0" Good for skating only. Food yuk, don't even think about it!

“It's cold, it's dark, it's a piece of Ice-Hockey history”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

Ok, Ice-Sheffield it certainly isn't but anyone who knows anything about ice-hockey will appreciate Whitley Bay ice rink. It's steeped in history and hasn't changed much in the last 20 years but it is what it is.

There aren't many rinks in the country that have had home players go on and make careers in the NHL, but this is one of them. (Mike Babcock - Coach of the Detroit Redwings)

I love playing on this ice as it always seems slightly narrower than most Olympic rinks. As a result that gives a fast and flowing game with plenty of big hitting opportunities.

For those who've never played hockey in Canada the Whitley Bay is as close as you can get without crossing the pond. Most rinks over there are the same as this place. Get's my thumbs up every time.

“Fun day out”
Reviewed 16 April 2014 via mobile

Yes the place is shabby, however the ice rink is a good size and the ice is well maintained, the staff are friendly and I have honestly used worse toilets in my life. Shabbiness doesn't dampen the fun day we've had an we will definitely be going again

“Good rink - Need more of them in the country!”
Reviewed 13 April 2014

It is a shame to see negative reviews of this place - if you like ice skating, come and live where I do in Yeovil where you have to travel 100 miles to skate!

The place really is very 'spit & sawdust' But it is everything that you need! Some investment in the place, making it look nice etc wouldn't go a miss, but I would prefer any upkeep to be spent on the ice!

As a keen ice hockey player, facilities like this should never be taken for granted!

And I hope this place is never 'demolished' like someone in a previous review has flippantly stated.

You have to go a VERY long way to find a similar facility!

“Demolition needed”
Reviewed 8 February 2014

Loved this place as a child and went most weekends. However, it seems as if the place hasn't been updated since those days 40 years ago. Had to run out of toilets as the place was so dirty and smelly and my daughter refused to use them. Cafe isn't very appealing and coffee is gross. Spoons on counter and luke warm liquid. Ice rink needs total refurbishment and lots of areas in seating with torn floors etc which is dangerous. Lady on rink side with skating aides was rude to one of our party. Man on skate hire however was very pleasant and helpful.
Place seriously needs money spent on it but would probably be better knocked down and rebuilt to bring back the magic of the place.
