Owner description: Turton tower is a house that has been evolving over the last 500 years. From a stone tower house in the 1400s, to the home of the Tudor Orrell and, later, the Victorian Kay Families, Turton Tower has been altered and adapted to suit the needs and tastes of those who lived here. It is because of these changes that Turton Tower is of national importance and unique in Northwest England. Today it still captures the spirit of those ages and displays some of the finest paintings and furniture in the region. Turton Tower is owned and run by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.

My husband and I have now been here twice and never made it past the tearoom and garden so we still have no idea what the house is like inside! But I can tell you that it is worth a visit for the little tearoom alone as they produce the most amazing home made cakes and scones which are great along with a pot of tea (I even saw a little knitted tea cosy on one of the pots on out last visit!) - and reasonably priced too which is a bonus. Very nice and tranquil to be able to sit outside at one of the tables if the weather is kind!
There is also a small play area tucked away further back - and a lovely garden full of fruit, veg and flowers being developed and run by volunteers. Really nice to walk around and the volunteer gardeners are always happy to have a chat and tell you about it.
Not sure of the opening times so you need to check the website - think they also do occasional plays on the lawns in the summer. As we have unfinished business we will be back but maybe next time we need to visit the house BEFORE the tea room, now there's a thought...

We really did feel like we were being pulled back through time as we explored the house. Kept the kids fascinated and made for some fantastic pics.

Paula has taken over the tea rooms and what a delight. Food home made and excellent. Warm and welcoming - thanks Paula.
Breakfasts best ever - smoked salmon and perfect scrambled eggs an absolute bonus.
Cakes to die for.

Our primary reason for dropping in was to visit the café which is EXCELLENT and not to be missed. It is extremely good value and the cakes are home made by the lady running it. Feeling refreshed, we went into the Tower which is fascinating because of the way bits have been added over 300 years. The volunteer guides are welcoming and enthusiastic.

Love the old house steeped in history. Apparently, they have a ghost! You can sit outside in good weather with the best pot of tea in Bolton. Homemade cakes are very good quality.
