Had a most pleasant, enjoyable weekend break at the Royal Pier Hotel, Sandown. From entering the hotel the staff were most welcoming and couldn't do enough for you. The hotel was spotlessly clean and the rooms were also very clean and comfortable, with plenty of coffee and tea for refreshments. The dining room was very spacious, very clean and the meals were good home cooked food at its best, plentiful and varied. The concert room again was spacious with excellent choice of drinks and great entertainment. The bar staff again were very good and the service was excellent with a quick turn around.

Room Tip: Just relax and enjoy the stay

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review following your recent stay at our Hotel. It was very nice to hear that you were happy with everything and even though you had been transferred from another Hotel, you were not disappointed and enjoyed your stay.

I will pass your comments onto our staff as it is always nice to have some positive feedback in difficult times.

Stayed at this hotel thanfully for one night only. The hotel building from the exterior is welcoming and has period charm, however the inside of the building couldnt be more different. You honestly feel as though you have stepped back in time. The decor is tired and dated, the hotel smells of cabbage and the overall feel of the hotel seems much like that of a nursing home! We paid extra for a 'sea view', we ended up with half of a sea view as our what would have been once a lovely big Victorian room now has a partition wall making the room two. We were left with half a window to look out off!! The room had obviously been renovated (as the manager has mentioned in responses to other reviews) but all they have done is got a pot of magnolia paint and painted over all of the original peeling wallpaper. THIS IS NOT RENOVATION!!!!! I honestly can't believe the managers are happy with the renovation, it is awful and cheap! The Furniture is falling apart, the bed very small and squeeky, the headboard stained and dirty and the bath suite is avacado green and you either have a shower or bath, not the luxury of them both!! As for them saying every room has a colour tv, what they don't tell you is that the colour tv is one of the original colour tvs that were produced probably about 30 years ago!!!! The breakfast set up is odd to say the least, you are allocated a table which means all of the guests are confined in one small area of what is a very large dining space. My partner and I had the english breakfast and his comments were 'Is this a childs breakfast??!!' The portions are small and the food is basic and cheap. Overall i would never stay in this hotel again and would definately say it isnt a three star!!

Thank you for taking the time to comment..

The present owners took over this 65 bedroom Hotel four years ago and in that time have spent many thousands of pounds replacing the roof, installing new boilers, upgrading to comply with current Fire regulations, along with replacing reception and dining room furniture.

We have painted and carpeted many of the rooms this year and when funds allow we are upgrading. This will obviously take some time when many guests like yourselves take advantage of our 'web specials' only paying £23.00 per person per night. I am sure you will agree it is excellent value for money. All our colour televisions, although not modern flat screen, all work.

We would point out that we have lots of repeat business and rarely have complaints about the portion sizesof either our breakfasts or evening meals.

We are not and have never advertised as a 3 star hotel, so are at a loss to know where you got that information.

The hotel could do with a complete update and refurbishment BUT the hotel was clean, the staff were friendly and helpful and the food was good. We would go back.

I got back from The Royal Pier Hotel yesterday. Arrival went very smoothly, given key to room and our cases were brought up approximately 10/15 mins later. Room was pleasant with a view over the sea and pier. It was definitley tired and dated, but it was clean and comfortable.
The dining room is run very regimentally, but it works. You dont have to wait very long for your meals. Anything you ask for is brought to you very shortly. The meals are not a la carte, but they are very nice, and there is a good choice of three courses.
The staff in there are very helpful and friendly, as are the housekeepers and the bar staff.
The management are aware that the place needs re vamping but in the economic situation at the moment, it is going to take time. They are doing their best to renew the place. This year they have had new carpets put down in all rooms. The bed linen is new and very clean, the towels are thick and fluffy.
For the price we have paid we have had a wonderful experience. I would definitely go back.
The company on our Buckleys coach trip were second to none, we had a wonderful time with all of them, thank you one and all.

For what we paid and what we got it was excellent value.

If you are looking for luxury don’t stay here. Although room’s were clean & tidy, we had a terrible bed, too small & squeaky and worst of all, they still use dreaded blankets (not a duvet in sight). Towels were rough and on the small side. Room was also cramped, but others in our group had huge rooms, also rooms looked very dated.

Tea making facilities are in each room, but they must use the cheapest tea bags & coffee on the market. It was foul.

Fantastic location right on seafront, pity our room faced the back of the kitchens, which was noisy occasionally and you could smell smoke from canteen workers wafting through the windows.

Upper bar area was cold, no heating on the 3 nights we were there.

Adequate swimming pool.

Awesome staff, really helpful throughout the booking process, and duration of our stay. All the hotel staff were polite and respectful, the service in the dining room was excellent, the food was fabulous, and there was a high standard of cleanliness everywhere. We stayed half board, and were amazed at the variety of meal options on the menu, which were plentiful and cooked beautifully. We loved the hotel building itself, it had real soul and was full of character, and felt very welcoming. Room was huge, practical, very clean, and although a shower would have made it perfect, the bath filled quickly. We had great sea views, slept really well and didn't experience the noise distrubance some people have commented on. The evening entertainment was fun, and we were amazed that all of this could be provided at the price we paid! The location was great, with easy access to both the shops, and beach, and a great base to come back to after exploring other parts of the island. We've stayed in hotels all over the UK, Europe, North Africa and the USA, and for a first trip to the IOW, we felt that the Royal Pier was superb. It's been one of the nicest places we've stayed in, as we felt welcomed by staff, experienced good honest service, great food, and all at a price we couldn't fault. Despite the current recession, the hotel are undertaking a programme of refurbishment, and we sincerely hope that this will continue to attract more guests. We wish the hotel every success in the future, and will definately be returning and have already reccomended it to friends and family. Next time i'm going to remember my swimming costume for the indoor pool! Thanks you guys for a great stay.

Many thanks for taking the time to comment. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again. Our refurbishment is almost complete and we are really pleased witht the results. The re-carpeting has made such a difference. We hope the weather does not affect us too badly for Christmas. We hope you have a good Xmas and we look forward to seeing you again in 2011.

Had to stay somewhere near the funeral we had to go to and this was cheap enough. Initial impression was that the guy was really trying to help but the hotel is in a very sad state of wear. Breakfast was good but could have been a buffet style and more up to date. The room was not too warm and the blankets very thin, the pillows like a bag of cement. Noise level from above was appalling and we only got a couple of hours sleep because of our neighbours. That's not the hotel fault but everything sounds loud. and walls and floors not sound proofed. Wouldn't stay again but have to say the staff were very freindly and very pleasent.
