“WOULD COME BACK”
Reviewed 28 September 2011

This hotel was ideally situated for the attractions.I found this hotel to be very clean and tidy. The staff were very friendly. The waiting service in the dining room at meal times were excellent. Most of the time we had Tania serving us. She was very good at her job. The food was very good. Entertainment was reasonable. I asked for a seaview room and a walk-in shower in which I got both. The bed linen was clean and tidy which shows the chambermaids did a good job.Now we come to the bad points: the lift was very outdated, and only accommodated 2 people at a time; The bathroom was very small.Smallest wash basin I have ever seen.Tea, sugar and milk was provided in the room but only enough for 2 cups per person per day.If we wanted extra we had to pay for it. If required the charge was 3p for sugar,3p for tea and 5p for milk. I found this unbelievable as I have never known this to be the case in any other hotel. It was a good stay on the whole and i would book again.

Room Tip: try for first floor. We was in room 66 which was 2 floors up but still a long way to walk after usin...

Thank you for writing a reviiew following your recent stay at our Hotel. We have passed your comments on to Tanya.

We take on board your comments and some of the points raised, it would be difficult to change. We like most businesses work within a budget.

We have this week checked with other Hotels to see if they charge from extra tea etc and some do and some dont. We have found in the past some of the guests would be drinking 8/10 cups of beverage per day which we feel is extravagent. However, we have now changed our Policy to be more flexible on this matter.

I arrived early, reception staff were very helpfull, made my room ready for 11.30am. Room was excellent overlooking Sandown Pier. Nice clean, comfortable bed, plenty of tea & coffee.Room was "old fashioned" but it was in keeping with the age of the Hotel. Overall excellent value for money, I will definately book again on my next visit to I.O.W.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review following your stay at our Hotel.

We always try to accommodate guests requiring an early check-in, but sometimes this is not possible. We were pleased to be able to do so on this occasion.

we have just had a lovely weekend here and really enjoyed it, yes it does cater for the older clientele, but so does most of the island. we found the breakfast good and there was plenty of it too, the bar prices were very reasonable for a hotel and the staff that we met were lovely. they had entertainment on every night and that was good, we got a few of the oldies up dancing. we will all be old one day and i would like to meet people like us when i get to that stage, as we are all young at heart. Our room was lovely and clean with a sea view and a balcony. All in all a great little weekend away..We have booked to come back in november.. see you all then :) The Harrops

Thank you for the review folllowing your recent stay.

It is difficult to cater for all age groups staying at the Hotel, but it is nice to see that you, like us, accept that we will all be old one day, and it is nice to see different age groups enjoying their stay together.

We look forward to seeing you in November.

The wife and I have been to this hotel 4 times now and each time we like it more. The staff are very attentive and helpfull, the room we stayed in had recently been decorated and all the windows had recently been double glazed. The meals were adiquate and service was good.Entertainment wasnt great but atleast you were entertained every night. We both like this hotel and wont go anywhere else on the isle of white.

Room Tip: Most rear rooms may expereance some noise early in the morning, shutting windows will help.

On arriving at the hotel I have to admit i was a little taken aback by the decor - as many have stated it is like something from a different era- indeed my own grandmother had exactly the same TV and bed covers. After a while I actually started to find this decor rather quaint. The Isle of Wight does cater for older guests and those expecting up to the minute 5* amentieis need to stop being so tight and pay more for their accomodation.

Breakfast was fine, drinks are fairly priced and I found the staff to be friendly. Location is about as central as you can get and the views (if you get a sea view) are undoubtedly great. We were in one of the back rooms where we looked over a courtyard, but gain I felt this was fair for the price we paid. The only major downside of being at the back was the noise caused by the kitchen staff woke me up at 6am and the room was very hot - even with the window open. There is a small pool which I did not use, but it looked clean and warm.

Our bed was made up and the room was clean.

Room Tip: If possible, ask for a sea room. Rooms 19 and 20 overlook the courtyard and are hot and pretty noisy

Thank you for your recent review.

Although we do cater for various age groups, we accept that a large number of our guests are of the older generation.

We are constantly doing our best to reburbish rooms on a regular basis, but still in keeping with the age of the building. We are currently replacing many of the bedcovers and curtains to upgrade the rooms. We held the price increase on drinks earlier this year to keep our prices competitive and I appreciate your comment that "it was a fair price for what you paid" and agree that sometimes guests have paid for a 2 star Hotel but expect the service and decor of a 5 star establishment..

We stayed at the Pier Hotel for 5 nights August Bank Holiday, we paid £370.00 for the stay. As we are not early risers when away because we have to be up very early throughout the week, we missed maid service most days, when asking at reception for tea and coffee for the room we were quizzed as to why we wanted more and had to explain that the maid had not been in to leave any, then we were given 2 tea bags, 2 coffee sachets 4 milks and 4 sugar sachets. Why be so tight after all a tea bag works out at around 1p each, And we missed breakfast everyday so you think they could spare a few tea bags.

Further to your review following your recent stay at our Hotel.

I do recall you both as your husband works on a market and he was pleased to have a sleep in. When you first asked for tea bags, I was concerned that the chambermaid had missed servicing your room. As soon as you explained to me the position each day, I gave you extra tea/coffee etc. I have also been informed by the chambermaid that she also gave you extra because you had informed her that you like to sleep in.

B&B location: Excellent. Bang opposit the beach - next to Sandown Pier.
Room location: Bad. Room No. 20 was the very last room in the corridor containing many rooms and the single window in the apartment faced something which looked like the backyard of other buildings including its own. Also, the room was stuffy and had an unpleasant decor and low lighting. Seemed to be close to the kitchen since could hear utensil noise early morning.
Furnishing within the room: Okay. Creaky beds and floors. Small room of approx. 9ft X 11 ft size
Ensuite Bathroom: Okay. Within 2 ft of the bed. Quite small containing a shower + WC of size approx. 4.5ft X 8 ft.
Breakfast: Good. Not much choice for vegetarians though service was good and prompt by the waiters.
Security: Average. Had to leave the window open as the room was very stuffy and hot, but since the room was close to the backside, felt uneasy most times while sleeping.
Value for money: Definitely not worth £70 for a couple for a night for a Double bedroom ensuite bathroom.

Thank you for sending a report to Trip Advisor.

We take on board your comments. The room sizes do all vary and you had booked a standard room. We still feel that £70.00 for 2 people for Bed and Breakfast in a Hotel with an indoor pool and entertainment is value for money.

We have compared our tariff with 12 other Hotels in Sandown and the majority of them are charging £80.00 per couple for bed and breakfast.
