“Well worth a second visit!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2011

This was a very nice, comfortable hotel with excellent service. The room was large with a good view. Vey comfortable bed and adequate en suite facilities. It would have been nice to have a dressing table and chair in the room but this omission was far outweighed by the kindness and generosity of the owner. The hotel was run by the owner and his daughter and nothing was too much trouble. The dining room was bright and comfortable and the food well cooked and presented. Really good sized portions and no quibble if you wanted more.

Sandown is a very convenient place to be to visit most of the interesting places on the island. Not much to do in the evenings but this was not a problem as the owner of the hotel kept us amused most evenings with anecdotes from his interesting and varied career. It was great to have someone so willing with whom to chat!

Having had car problems mid-week, the owner was kindness itself, driving us to a local car hire firm and also looking after us magnificently on the day of our departure when we were awaiting AA assistance.

All in all, a very relaxing week's holiday with charming company. I would have no hesitation in recommending The Chester Lodge Hotel to my friends and should we wish to stay in Sandown on another occasion, then this would be the first choice.

Room Tip: We had an upstairs room facing the front car park. The room was bright and airy and very comfortable...

We booked this hotel after researching on the Isle of White disable friendly hotel site which classes this hotel as suitable for a person who uses a wheelchair all the time.

The main issue was that the room was not big enough for the wheelchair as it consisted of two bunk beds together and the only way we could get into the room was to help the hotel owner move the bed into a more suitable location. We were unable to use the bathroom as it was not wide enough for me to get in with my wheelchair, the web site appears to be outdated and states that there is an extra wide shower, this was not true.

Please treat this review as very unfair. We had no prior knowledge that the individual making the adverse comments was full time in a motorised wheelchair and had no lower body movement whatsoever. The room in question is used both as a standard twin or disabled room. When we receive a request for a disabled room we go to great lengths to explain that a disabled individual would need to have an ability to take one or two small steps with or without assistance to utilise the en-suite facility. Wheelchairs easily fit through the main bedroom doors and partly enter the en-suite (there is a hand wash basin directly in front). The previous occupants of the room had asked for the beds to be pushed together and we seperated them. At no time did we ask for or receive any help with the moving. Very few of the comments made are factual. We are definately very disabled friendly. Our main priority is to ensure that our guests have a comfortable and pleasant stay with us. We are randomly inspected by the AA and are rated 3 star and by the food standards agency we have been awarded 5 stars.

Can't say a bad thing about this place, was a bit weary when i got there, thinking it looked a bit old fashioned however i soon turned my oppinion around when I was welcomed with such warmth by the owners. Its a really stunning place, ideal for a romantic getaway. Was suprised at how much there is too see and do, and the family owners were so kind to give me and my partner plenty of tips on where's best to go.
I really really didn't want to leave, one of the best weekends I've had.
Thanks so much!
