“Brilliant hotel!!! A pleasure to stay with excellent company!”
Reviewed 4 August 2013 via mobile

I rate this hotel highly not only because I have stayed various times recently but because of the great people who run and put so much effort into making it a great family run business. Staying at the hotel is enjoyable as it is only a short walk from Sandown beach, and the small town. There is a lot to do on the Isle of Wight which is why we go as its a brilliant place! The Chester Lodge hotel tops the trip off as its such a great, reliable and clean place to stay! Definitely worth staying at!!! Will be back for another trip soon!!! :-)

This is litterally like staying at what you think it would be like in the movie chainsaw massacre! Scary! Didn't clean our room!!!! Only once and only made one bed the other was left messy. Left wet towels on the floor when said they would be replaced. Was told that we would get discount in lots of local restaurants an a free glass of wine.. We went to one of the specific restaurants as did another family staying the same time as us and neither we did they get any discount. When asking the owners of the restaurant they said this deal was on two years ago! The owner/manager of the hotel said we caused a leak downstairs but was nowhere to be seen! Said that maids would clean rooms everyday- did not see one maid throughout entire stay... nor did our room!! 3 familys in the hotel.. Need i say more? Dirty facilities, beds were like sleeping on slats on wood, bedroom was dirty and duvet covers didnt even have buttons to secure duvet! Showers had mould around them! Smelly hotel smells like an old loft! Breakfast wasn't fresh country meat more like microwaved smart price meat! Not worth £75 a night by far! If owner is reading this please take this into consideration and think of it as constructive criticism. Nothing against you as a person... Needs to be condemned and rebuilt!

in brief this gent arrived with two young ladies , claiming that they were his wife and daughter. both possibly in the twenties. booked into family room. all seemed well until water started to come thru the ceiling of the room below. when we went to their room to check we heard loud laughing .one of the ladies opened the door wrapped in a towel and she was dripping wet. we asked if she had maybe left the door open when showering causing the water leak. at this point the male and other lady appeared from the shower both dripping wet and were not happy with being disturbed. (whoops) the ONLY bed used was made every day. the 75.00 referred to was for all three, bed and breakfast.

We rang about a week before, once other details had been planned and talked to Jackie who was able to answer all of our questions, with no pressure placed upon us.

After a long day that included the trip from Newport in Wales, ferry crossing and a lot of driving to see some of the many glorious coastal views we arrived about 4pm. Bryan greeted us and made us feel at home immediately, showed us our room and offered help to bring in our luggage. He is very knowledgeable about Sandown, Isle of Wight, and passionate about his hotel. This shows in how he talks about it. Everything was as Jackie had told us and we could not have wanted for more. If we had, I am sure Bryan and Debbie would have provided it for us!

We chose this hotel because we wanted to be near the centre of Sandown, close to friends, shops and with easy access to the main road. With plenty of parking and disabled spaces too Chester Lodge suited our needs exactly. Central town centre is not much more than 5 minutes away which means the Leisure Centre, Sandown Pier and the Conservative Club are all on easy walking distance. Regular services to all parts of the island pass the front door and the railway station is only 15 minutes or a short taxi ride from the hotel.

We had a really great break on the island and is is as much down to the care and attention we received at Chester Lodge as it was ti the fine weather that we enjoyed ourselves. We will certainly be returning and we cannot praise too highly the service we received from Jackie initially, then by Bryan, Debbie and Lee. They are worth their weight in gold, nothing is enough and you can be promised a warm welcome, good food and attentive hosts in a very comfortable family run hotel.

Room Tip: We asked for a ground floor room because of my wife's disability. There are four downstairs, inc...

Having read the other review concerning the disabled facilities at this hotel I find it very strange that a person with such needs chose to stay at The Chester Lodge. I do not think this person can have asked any questions prior to staying at this hotel otherwise they would easily have established that unfortunately it would not be suitable for their needs.

I too holidayed on the Island with a disabled person – my 85 year old mother – who uses a wheelchair and a walking frame and, amongst other needs, requires a higher height toilet with support bars around it. I however took the trouble to talk to the owners of various hotels in detail about my mother’s needs before I booked to stay anywhere and I found that all the owners I spoke were all totally up front and frank about the suitability of their establishment for my Mum so it was very easy for me to decide where we could, or couldn’t, stay.

Bryan, the owner of The Chester Lodge was extremely helpful in this respect. He explained that he had a spacious ground floor room which would easily accommodate a person using a wheelchair but that my Mum would have to be capable of taking a few steps in order to be able to use the bathroom as, although it has an extra wide entrance door, it is quite a small room so you cannot get a wheelchair right inside it. He also advised that there was a hand rail on the wall by the toilet, but, if my Mum also needed a raised toilet seat and toilet surround that these could be hired from the Red Cross on the island and he would be happy to temporarily install these in the bathroom in my Mum’s room for the duration of her stay.

On the basis of this I confidently booked a four night stay at The Chester Lodge and we had a lovely time. Bryan and his staff were the perfect hosts, nothing was too much trouble. Someone was always there to lend a helping hand, our rooms were lovely, the food was good and Bryan himself was very entertaining. The parking facilities were also perfect – I could park right alongside the ramped access at the side of the hotel which in turn led into the passageway right by my Mum’s room.

There was a slight problem the first evening - I had to wheel Mum into dinner in her wheelchair as unfortunately the chairs in the dining rooms do not have arms on them and my Mum cannot get herself in out of a chair that does not have arms. As soon as he realised this was a problem though Bryan set about thinking where he might source a suitable chair from and by breakfast time the next morning my Mum had a wonderful high-backed chair with arms on it to sit in (which proved to be so comfortable that she dozed off in it at the end of her meal one evening!) As I said, nothing was ever too much trouble for Bryan, he really went out of his way to make sure everything was perfect for us.

We would therefore highly recommend The Chester Lodge for anybody who is looking for a friendly hotel hosted by people who really enjoy making your stay the best it can be – and don’t be put off if you are a wheelchair user, or have any other kind of disability, just make sure you tell Bryan exactly what your needs are and he will truthfully advise you whether The Chester Lodge can meet those needs or not. I hope that it can however and that you too can also have a really good time there.

I have had two great stays in this warm and friendly hotel. Bryan was very welcoming and went out of his way to make sure my stays were perfect both times, in May and June this year.
My room was very comfortable and inviting with a view of the sea. The room had everything I needed and more. The breakfast was superb and set me up for the day.
I am recommending this hotel to all my friends and family. It is great value for money.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a sea view if that option is available

I first met Bryan and his family at the Chester Lodge when they helped me out of a very difficult emergency situation I had with 66 children visiting the Island with no hotel due to another hotel suddenly ceasing business. We were accommodated and found the welcome so warm and caring that we have booked year on year ever since. i have also stayed here many times with my family and just my wife, as well as with friends. the accommodation is excellent, the food is superb and the attentive service at all times is second to none. I fail to see how anyone can stay here and criticise any aspect of the hospitality, unless they have other agendas to follow. The greatest compliment I pay Bryan regularly when i arrive is the fact that i feel 'at home.' I certainly won't be looking elsewhere all the time the Chester Lodge is is existence. Thanks Bryan and family. Terry G
