We really enjoyed our five day break last week. Cheerful, efficient staff, excellent food, and a very clean, comfortable room. We didn't let the rain and storms stop us getting out and about and we had the bonus of two beautiful sunny days. There is a lot to see, even out of season, on the Island and the local busses are excellent and frequent. We would highly recommend both the hotel and the island. Perhaps we will manage to get back later in the year.

Just got back from an excellent value 4 night trip with Shearings. The hotel is located a 10 minute walk from the pier and main street of Sandown. The room looked to have been recently refurbished and was just the job. The corridors away from the central part of the hotel were in need of a little tlc and new carpets but this is only a very minor quibble. The food and the service was to a much higher standard than I anticipated considering the number of people dining. Our waitress Agnes deserves special commendation for her boundless energy and cheerful disposition. Had we visited at a warmer time of year it would have been nice to spend some time in the excellent grounds. On our day without a trip we did the cliff top walk to Shanklin (about 2.5 miles) and enjoyed excellent drinks and a snack at Cinders cafe on the High Street.
We spent a little time in Sandown too (although we much preferred Shanklin) and can recommend calling in the Kings House bar on the High Street and sitting in the conservatory with its fine view of the sea.

We had a wonderful time in Sandown despite the stormy rain and gales. The food was excellent and chef’s specials superb. Our room, having recently been refurbished, was very clean and comfortable. All the staff were efficient and helpful, especially Ryan our waiter. Trips out to a small winery, with tasting, and the ‘Waltzing Waters’ show were somewhat disappointing. We went to Yarmouth but missed seeing the Needles. Nevertheless the 4 free drinks, a pint of bitter and three brandies, on Gala night were very welcome. My wife did not want to come home!

My wife & I needed to book a hotel near Sandown for 2 nights to attend a funeral. Previous experience has told me that independent tourist area hotels that charge £75 or more a night nearly always disappoint on the value for money front and there is nothing worse at the end of a stay feeling overcharged for a tired run down hotel that has clearly enjoyed better days.

At the Broadway Park Hotel at £40 per double room per night including breakfast I knew that it could not fail to provide good value for money.

The Hotel itself is situated within its own beautiful grounds and the reception areas are extremely spacious and of a bygone era. All could do with refurbishment especially the ground floor toilets.

The staff were extremely friendly and were clearly working in an environment where the guests could be found complaining about the less than 5 star accommodation whilst conveniently forgetting that they have paid very little for their stay.

Our room (No. 111) was located in a very distant part of the hotel and was in desperate need of refurbishment. The TV was an old 14" CRT analogue model presumably receiving its signal from 5 Sky Digital or similar receivers. Clearly a modern digital flat screen TV would provide many more channels and be large enough to see from the bed but would be a sizeable investment if all of the rooms need one.

The bathroom was very old and resembled the sort found in long-gone holiday parks of the Hi-Di-Hi era. The brown lino running from the floor up the side of the bath was an amusing touch as was the replacement patch of lino where a replacement basin with a narrower pedestal left the gap filled with a lino offcut and silicon sealant.

Unfortunately the bath did not contain a shower unit or shower mixer taps so a rubber hose version was provided that unfortunately did not fit on the taps and resulted in the bathroom flooding when used. We apologised to the room staff for this and they tried to replace the hose with a new one that was cable-tied to the taps but unfortunately this solution didn't work.

The bath itself had limitless supplies of piping hot water and was a joy to use instead of the normal daily shower. I dread to think how much is being spent on hot water provision for baths when a shower mixer tap unit could cut down water usage dramatically.

Breakfast was adequate for the cost although the fried eggs had probably been under the hot plate a little too long. Jams & marmalade were available in sachets on each table and I wonder if self service large pots on the buffet table might be a more cost effective way of serving this.

All guests were assigned a table number for breakfast which meant that a very, very large (but empty) restaurant gave a very cold impression. A smaller restaurant with faster turning tables would make for a more modern & lively breakfast experience.

Clearly the hotel requires vast amounts of investment to bring it up to the standard of the household name chain hotels but I fear that this hotel is hostage to the coach companies who don't dare to charge their customers a realistic price for a tour package and in turn will not pay a realistic accommodation charge, resulting in disappointed hotel guests!

For my part I was grateful to not be disappointed for what I received at a ridiculously low room rate.

I fear that the only way for the owners to achieve a reasonable return on the vast investment needed in this beautiful building is to undertake the refurbishment and turn the building into a nursing home where realistic fees can be charged.

Room Tip: If the Green neon light switch in the bedroom for the heated towel rail in the bathroom is on, it me...

Thank you for taking your time to post a review on your recent stay with us. We are aware that some parts of the hotel need refurbishing which is being addressed in an ongoing programme, this year we are having the dining room refurbished which will improve the ambience of your dining experience. We do offer excellent value for money and all the staff deliver excellent customer service sometimes in difficult circumstances.

We had a good half board weekend break in January in this very nice hotel. Lovely staff, good service and food. When booking, did ask if it was necessary to pay for parking. Advised to do so as it was a party weekend. In fact there were mainly only 2 other cars on the big car park at any one time as there were also 2 coaches in. So very few self drive guests and no need to have paid for the parking.

Room Tip: Upgrade rooms are good but on lower level and rather dark. no views of gardens.

Thank you for posting a review of your stay with us. I was delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay. It is always difficult to judge how many self drive bookings we may have for a weekend, at busy times we can have more cars than parking space so it is always peace of mind if you take up the offer of the priority parking which is guaranteed. Look forward to seeing you again.
