Reviewed 13 August 2011

the Melville Hall is in a great location on the IOW and the hotel is comfortable and well maintained. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and the food is to die for! Lamb shank or beef bourgignon, yummee and the breakfast excellent also. we will definitely go back again this year,
C & D

Room Tip: no need to upgrade for a spa in the bath, the fitness centre has a jacuzzi and outdoor hot tub.

Brilliant evening food, friendly staff and lovely outside area. This is the second time we have stayed here and we will be back. Its definately worth having a superior room, 126 is a nice room, although the bathroom is just ok. travel zoo have some very good offers. Its also adults only hotel.

The stay didn't start well when they had a different time down for my treatment and refused to fit me in as I was, according to them, 10 minutes late. I've never had this be a problem before, especially when the client believes they have the right time and have rushed there to make sure they were on time.

Anyway not wanting to spoil the break I said it didn't matter and we were given the key to our room, 122. I thought it was suspicious when we got to the top of the stairs and couldn't see a sign to our room. We were in fact right outside it, it was at the top of the stairs opposite the payphone and relaxing chairs and leaflet racks. A little disheartened we opened the door to see it only just opened before the small double bed in what was the smallest room I have ever seen. The decor was also very tired, what you would expect at your nana's house, and if I had brought one of my cats, even the kittens, there wouldn't have been any room to swing them. We didn't get as far as the bathroom before turning round.

There were no other rooms other than the one next door so we asked for our money back, which thankfully they did give us. I can't comment on anything else as we didn't get that far, but it did turn what should have been a relaxing short break into a trip looking for somewhere to stay. I would never suggest to anyone to stay here as you too could end up with the dreaded rooms.

In the end we stayed at two beautiful places, Bourne Hall Hotel in Shanklin and Sentry Mead Hotel in Totland, near the Needles. Both also set in much nicer places than Sandown, which is a smaller version of Blackpool and not really our cup of tea. Shanklin is much better with great thatched pubs and tea rooms and Totland must have the restaurant with the best place to see the sunset on the Isle of Wight, The Waterfront.

All in all a great trip but in no thanks to the below par staff at the Melville Hall Hotel, the manager whom the receptionist spoke to to authorise our refund didn't even have the good grace to apologise themselves. They must know this room is one of the worst ever and yet have the gaul to keep renting it out!!

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

We wanted a couple of days relaxation and we found it here. The resort itself is an old-fashioned seaside town - not a usual venue for us but we were pleased with the hotel - especailly the service and the food and the spa which was uncrowded and with a warm outside pool.
Not a trendy place - more quaint - but because it was such an easy place to be we would go back.
Good things: availability of drinks and light refreshments; very comfortable huge bed; good sun loungers
Improvements: A steam room would be good. Rooms look at bit 80s.
Best thing: Staff were 100% delightful and the waiter can do the guardian cryptic crossword!

The staff are very welcoming and helpful, from the time that you book over the phone. The rooms were spotless and had everything you would require including an iron and ironing board. We ate in the hotel restaurant on both nights and the food and service was excellent. The indoor and outdoor pools are very well kept with indoor sauna and detox rooms an added bonus. Robes and towels are provided without charge. I had a massage in the Spa which was wonderful, again the staff friendly and helpful. A very nice touch was a quiet lounge with complimentary tea, coffee, water, biscuits and fruit. This was especially welcoming as there were a few hours between checking out time and our ferry crossing. All the facilities of the hotel are still open to you after checking out. So aftere a last look around it was very nice to come back and have a cup of coffee and biscuit while haveing a read to pass the time. As you can tell we had a very enjoyable stay and would like to return in the near future.
