Just arrived back from a long weekend at the Sands Hotel. The room we had was compact and therefore everything was within easy reach. The mattress could do with being replaced, the springs were rather prominent, but I'm a bit of a 'princess and the pea' type of girl, my husband slept like a log!

We paid very little for an awful lot, accommodation, two meals a day, entertainment and a very cheap bar. Everything was clean and tidy, with new carpeting and new decking for the balcony rooms.

Sandown is tired and run down in places, but there are some nice bars and restaurants on the front that offer an excellent range of food and drink. There's some shops worth exploring too.

Room Tip: The balcony rooms are popular as you can sit out and watch the sea and the world go by.

My wife and I (in our mid sixties) returned on the 9th May after a five day break organised by Opal Travel based in the I.O.W. , Paul, our driver & guide is second to none. All the suitcases were taken to our rooms for us so no humping them up stairs.

Now the Hotel, the bad bits first. Room decoration tatty, bulky wardrobe and chest of drawers, wardrobe obstructing French door to balcony with sea view. Small bathroom with tiny shower cubicle (don't drop the soap as you can't bend down to pick it up). Some rooms have the wash hand basin in the room, not in the bathroom. Our room had a double and single bed (making it more cramped) with clean white bed linen and duvets.

Now for the good bits. The hotel is in an excellent location just across the road from the nice sandy beach and a short stroll to the High Street. The hosts are very welcoming and all staff very friendly. All areas in the hotel are warm with a radiator in the room which soon warms up. There is a kettle in the room with two cups & saucers and spoons, two glasses and plastic beakers. Coffee sachets, tea and creamer pots are replenished daily. A hair drier is provided and there is a small LCD T.V. on the wall (ours only received ITV irrespective of which channel was selected, others only had BBC !) The rooms seem to have been recently re-carpeted and the towels were clean, white and in good condition. Don't forget to take soap, flannels, shampoo etc. There is also a clock/radio/alarm.

Meals:- Choice of cereals, porridge, fried breakfast, plus toast and jams, fruit juice, tea or coffee etc. for breakfast. You order the evening meal from the menu at breakfast time. Evening meals consist of three courses. There is always a veggy option for the main course. There is a jug of water on the table and unusually (but welcome) coffee served at the table afterwards. The singers every evening were very good on the whole.

To sum up, if you can cope with a cramped room, this hotel might suit you fine. Would we return, unlikely as we probably won't return to the I.O.W. for quite some time.

Hope this review is of some help, if so, please be kind and give us a tick in the box.

Room Tip: The sea views are pleasant.

I have stayed at the sands 5 times, I think that the hotel is very well run, and the staff work very hard to ensure we had a good stray, I look forward to returning in march 2014, each time I have stayed at the sands I've always been very pleased with the hotel and the staff

Have just completed a long weekend at the Sands Hotel. The staff were very welcoming from the start and our room was clean and a good size. We didn't have a sea view unfortunately, but it didn't really matter.
The food was very good for the price paid, (particularly the breakfast) and the Bar was good value too.
Would definately stay again!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view!

this is an average hotel with excellent hosts. The rooms are basic to say the least - we were only able to wash in the hand basin which was in the room - a VERY Small shower and wc area were carved out of one corner of the room making it just about possible to close the door. Bed was uncomfortable seemed to be a matress on a wooden base. We had a double bed and a single as well making it very cramped. Also the rooms were so hot as was the hotel throughout. we did manage to turn our heating off but still found the heat throughout the hotel made it unbearable to sleep. Food average very fast service which made us realize it had been prepared hours in advance as we had to pre-order dinner at breakfast. The staff were polite and helpful as were the owners but we wouldn't return.

Room Tip: request a sea view room

Sandown & Lake Youth Football Club held their children's Christmas Party at Sands Hotel today. Absolutely delighted with the venue. The owners, Lee and Shauna, were fantastic hosts and, given that there were 40 4 to 6 year olds marauding around the ground floor, they never blinked an eye! The place was spick and span, with lovely Christmas decorations and lights. The buffet was spot on with plenty spare for the parents. It's often difficult to find a venue which will cater for boisterous and excited children, but Sands Hotel was perfect. We shall be back! Many thanks to all the staff.

We have just returned from Sands Hotel after staying five days with 42 children. In two words. Absolutely great! Food- accommodating to some very fussy eaters, nothing was too much trouble. Not a great deal of choice but alternatives available if requested.so couldn't ask for more.
Rooms- basic but very clean and tidy - Lounge- everything available on request -
Staff - All staff were pleasant throughout the stay, Lee was great at the disco.
We ALL had a great time children and staff alike. in summary well worth the very reasonable prices paid. If you want five star pay five star prices!
