Great location, right on the beach. Food was very standard. Service surly. You need to obtain a key from the bar in order to use the outside toilet. They really need to brush up their act and look after customers.

On Sunday morning (8 May) I was in a party of six adults who were looking
forward to a hearty breakfast at this brilliantly appointed venue.
We drew up outside the establishment just before 10am and were looking at
the placards outside ('open early until late', or words to that effect) with
a view to entering through the open door.
As we prepared to descend to the entrance a person (who I now assume was the
manager) looked up from setting out some tables to brusquely call out: "We
are not open" - hardly the friendly sort of greeting I have come to know and
expect from visiting the Isle of Wight regularly over the last 55 years. I
asked when the café would be open and was answered with a surly "10 or 15
When I suggested that his greeting was hardly customer friendly and perhaps
he was suffering from an attitude problem, I was told that I was the one out
of order. He then suggested I never came back to which I obviously responded
that there would be no danger of such an occurrence.
Somewhat bemused that anyone would happily forego up to £50 worth of
business through unprovoked rudeness our party moved to a similar
establishment further along the beach where we were treated to a superb
breakfast in a friendly and convivial environment.
While in the café we mentioned our experience to both customers and staff to
whom the incident appeared as no great surprise.
Together with the other members of my party we left the island a day or so
later still at a loss to understand how anyone who runs a business that
relies heavily on customer satisfaction could be so boorish. The Isle of
Wight has a hard earned reputation for being a top tourist destination but
if the manager of the Driftwood Bar continues behaving in such an oafish
manner there will be many visitors who give Sandown in particular a miss and
possibly the whole Island, too.
Someone had a similar experience last year and reported it to the local newspaper likening this individual to Basil Fawlty. At least the John Cleese character had the saving grace of being amusing.

We went to the Isle of Wight at the Easter holidays and spent one day on the beach at Sandown with the kids.

Sundown beach for me isn't the nicest beach in the island, but we did find this quite nice little restaurant and bar right on the esplanade by the beach.

It's not somewhere I think I would dine at night, but it was fine for lunch - it struck me they were trying to invoke a bit of an Ozzie / Ibiza beach bar feel, I'm not sure you can pull it off in the isle of Wight!

That being said, the meal we had was pretty good - in particular the fresh grilled sardines I had.
Personally, I would like to see table service, rather than having to queue at the bar to place your order, but all in all not bad.
