“Lovely, clean and well maintained cottage”

We enjoyed our stay in this lovely cottage. It was well maintained and very clean. The cottage is near the beach, busstation and the railway station. Beside that there are lots of books, cds, leaflets and toys in the cottage , so you don't have to get bored. The only disadvantage of this cottage is the fact that there is no Wi-Fi.
I would recommend this cottage.

Thank for your kind review, and for looking after the place during your stay, I'm glad you had a good time. Other Guests have mentioned Wifi too, so it is on the list for end of season maintenance ready for next year's lettings.

“Great location and everything you need”
Reviewed 1 July 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Sudbury is a well located and surprisingly roomy holiday cottage; not much to look at from the outside but very nicely decorated and well appointed inside. It has everything a family needs - the owner obviously has young children or grandchildren as there are booster steps for the little ones, toys to play with, and a high chair. The owner is extremely responsive via email to any queries, the information pack is good, and the key-holder is very friendly and helpful. The location is great - just a two minute walk from one of the nicest beaches on the Island - and very private being situated at the end of a private drive (albeit a very narrow one - I winced every time we drove our 4x4 up there but didn't ever hit the walls even if the parking sensors were going crazy). The only minor niggle is that the double mattress really needs replacing; otherwise a very good, and extremely good value option for any family visiting the Island.

Thanks for your lovely review, and for looking after the place while you were there, I hope you will visit again in the future. The furnishings are replaced on a rolling basis but I am always open to suggestions from guests, so I'll get that checked. Thanks again.

“A lovely place to stay, Very clean, near to the beach.”
Reviewed 4 April 2015 for a stay in March 2015

Thank you for a lovely enjoyable stay. There were 7 of us. And found the bungalow very spacious and clean with everything that you need for an enjoyable holiday. A lovely sized garden, with only 5 mins walk from the local shops. This was perfect for us. The lady who gave us the keys was very kind and helpful. We also met the owner who was also very pleasant. I would definately recommend this holiday. You have 5 * from us thank you.

Thank you for your very nice review, it's lovely to hear that guests enjoyed their stay. Meeting you all was fun and I passed your nice comments on to Diane. You left the place very tidy and clean, and thanks for your help as the new lounge furniture arrived. Hope to see you again in the future. Jenny

“Great location, perfect for kids, and well equipped”
Reviewed 1 October 2014 for a stay in August 2014

We stayed in August 2014. There were 6 of us. Me and my wife, my wife’s mother, and our three children aged 4m, 23m, and 9 years. The 4 bedrooms worked well. Me and my wife, and our baby in the double room, my wife’s mother in the twin room, our 9 year old on the bunk beds, and our 23m old in the little single room (we put our travel cot in there and it fitted fine).

The cottage is very well stocked from a variety of perspectives, kitchen equipment, white goods, toys and books. The space also works well and our toddler really enjoyed running around and it was good to know that she was safe and couldn’t come to any harm.

The location was great and it was very easy to get to shops and the beach. In terms of the outlook from the property itself, it’s up a slightly narrow across road on a street which is made up on hotels, guest houses, and residential properties. What you can see from the gardens (front and back) are other houses and other peoples’ gardens. The back garden itself is a nice space. Had the weather been better we would’ve eaten out there for sure. It was peaceful and I’d concur with the other reviews, that say that you could be in the countryside, not a few streets away from a busy sea front!

Compared with the best self catering accommodation we’ve stayed in in the UK, Sudbury is a bit dated in places. Some of the rooms (kitchen and bathroom) seem to have had a more recent re-fit and were good. Some of the other rooms felt like they needed a bit of sprucing up. For this reason I can’t give it 5 stars. I was slightly surprised how high the other reviews were and to be honest I expected a little more wow factor given the consistently A+ reviews on Trip Advisor. That said, it suited us well, we enjoyed our week, and our dealings with the owner and the lady who let us in were absolutely fine so no complaints, it simply wasn’t amongst the best of the best self catering accommodation we’ve stayed in which the reviews led me to believe it would be.

Sandown itself

(I tried to ignore these factors in my grading) Sandown seems to be on the decline. There are a number of hotels that have shut down, and a number of shops that have suffered the same fate. What looks like it would’ve once been a department store was in its last three weeks while we were there. The vast majority of shops and hotels that remains seem to be struggling. This didn’t really impact on our enjoyment though.

Stuff To Do

We did the following:

Tree climbing in Ryde - excellent
IOW Zoo in Sandown - fairly good - certainly some decent animals (lions etc)
Sandown Carnival - excellent - even in the rain!
Pier - fairly typical amusement arcade sort of stuff
Sandown Park - excellent park including stuff for toddlers through to 9+. There’s also some paid-for stuff in there like a helter skelter, go karts etc
The Needles - dated in places but still good fun, especially the boat out to the lighthouse
Chessell Pottery Barns - paint and decorate your own pottery - excellent!

Overall Good:

The location is great. One of our criteria for our holiday was an easy run with the pram and carrying our toddler. You can be on the beach in a couple of minutes.

Well stocked property on a range of counts - games, cooking utensils, pots and pans, glasses, books etc.

Peaceful. Despite the fact that it’s in a residential street just a couple of minutes from the sea front you can’t hear any noise at all.

Safe and secure. Great for kids.

Overall Less Good:

Bit dated in places

“Perfect cottage for a family”
Reviewed 3 July 2014 for a stay in June 2014

Sudbury was the perfect holiday home for our extended family. It is spacious, immaculately clean and very comfortable. The well equipped, modern kitchen has the added bonus of an efficient washing machine and a dish washer.
There can be no better seaside location on the whole of the Isle of Wight. The cottage was a very short distance from the beach - so short that our 2 year old Granddaughter was able to walk there by herself.
We were very fortunate to have lovely weather during our one week visit and we enjoyed the garden very much indeed and managed to eat most evening meals on the patio.

The drive up to the bungalow is narrow and had to be negotiated with care but it was do-able.

...and what was the only thing we really missed? WiFi !!!! I know this sounds a little 'sad' but any chance before our next visit?

“Fantastic place to stay”
Reviewed 23 April 2014 for a stay in April 2014

Previous reviews had persuaded me that Sudbury would be a good place to stay and it more than lived up to what I had hoped. The bungalow was clean, spacious and brilliantly situated for local amenities including the beach and shops. The kitchen and bathroom were particularly appealing, looking as though they had recently been refitted and being equipped with everything you could want - including nice touches such as a toddler step by the bathroom sink. Overall a fantastic place to stay and one which we hope to return to!
