Just returned from a three night break at the Sandringham 4-7th Nov 2011. Paid 149 each and this was great value for money. Food was ample and hot, the breakfasts were really good. The dining room sits right on the sea front and the hotel is ideally situated. The communal areas upstairs are a bit dated but the room we occupied had been revamped (apart from the carpets), the bathrooms are very dated and no shower curtains...however over a period of a short break at the Sandringham over the past couple of years signs of refurb are obvious and for a place that size must cost the earth.
The staff are truly lovely and so obliging, same goes with the swimming pool, this is moderately big to some of those we have experienced and the jacuzzi is lovely, lovely bubbly.
The rooms at the back can be exploited to the noise of the Friday night louts but nothing too offensive.
The parking at the hotel can be a little nuisance, however from late Oct-April most of the parking on the Island is free and this goes for all the parking opposite the hotel, so no problem there.
Of course massive amounts of things to do, park at the Needles (free) and take a walk to the top, fab views and also you can see the remnants of the rocket testing. Zoo is always a wonderful days to wander, they have a great family history there. Also Osborne house. However the wander of the Island is the walking and talking, the Islanders love to talk and what a lovely bunch they are. Thanks IOW and the Sandringham, always a pleasure to come and taste your hospitality.

If your under 70 years old then don't bother, very poor bland food with absolutely no time, effort or imagination put into preparation, waiting staff do there best & even at times seam embarrassed at what they are serving. Young girl on reception is nice & tries hard to help but the old rotweiler either don't know, don't care or just can't be bother

We stayed at Sandringham Hotel September 10 - 14. We had 2 rooms as my mother was with us. This was a second year there for us. Several points really; we find the hotel very clean and not 'dreary' as somebody commented. The bathrooms are a priority for an upgrade I think, but I find the bedrooms themselves quite comfortable. The lift is limited but how could the company resolve this? the only thing would be to build a whole new lift shaft to the outside of the building, very expensive and would no doubt be reflected in the prices. We were served at the table by 'Jo' He was Hungarian and I could not ask for a more attent and pleasant guy to greet us at meal times. We all thought the food was good, as it was last year and one of the reasons to return. I think the prices are very reasonable compared to some other establishments we have stayed in, and you have to keep in mind it is a TWO star hotel and I think they do well for a 'budget' hotel. I don't know what people expect sometimes. If the lift was upgraded, if they ran entertainment evry night the star rate would go up and so would the price!

Room Tip: Front facing balcony sea view cost more.

Yipes! Booked this hotel not realising it was lowly rated as a two star and the price we paid with a balcony upgrade led us to believe it was a good quality hotel.

After seeing an advert in a national newspaper and making a brief check on Trip Advisor we noted it was rated no 7 in the Sandown area when we booked but it has currently dropped much lower and its easy to see why.

Completely bereft of any wow or redeeming features (or in our upgrade room even a proper shower) one wonders how it achieves any star rating.

Other negative reviewers have summed up the dilapidated condition of this establishment very truthfully and in spite of the owners lengthy replies to criticism on this forum we would not regard it as 'good value' in 2011.

Plus points are difficult but the dining room waiters were worth more stars than the hotel and the room staff do an almost heroic job with what they have to work with but sadly we found some of the reception staff were abrupt and less than helpful. Even mentioning the continuous parking hassle gets a surly response.

The hotels good location is touted as the reason for the much higher than two star prices we paid but surely that does not mean unsuspecting guests should face such badly worn, tired and dingy decor and a pervading atmosphere of grimness.

You have to wonder why the hotel has not been refurbished during the relatively affluent period before the financial crisis and how it is now going to happen in the present more austere times.

Not a hotel to stay in if you are easily depressed.
